Warrior Chicks: Rising Strong, Beautiful & Confident

Rate this book
Some battles we choose, others choose us. The world is looking and waiting for a company of women who will rise in the midst of hard times. It would be so much easier to sit…to give in. And, yet, isn’t there a part inside us all that longs to stand up and fight the battles before us? From her best-selling books, God Chicks and Daily Steps for GodChicks, Holly Wagner identified and encouraged the cultivation of aspects of the God Chick within every woman. The subject of this exciting book is the “Warrior Chick” who realizes she is destined to be an overcomer as she faces challenges, is encouraged as she realizes she is beautiful just the way she is, and is relieved as she learns how to equip herself to fight the fight. As Holly well knows from her experience as a warrior chick battling breast cancer, we aren’t living in peacetime and we can either choose to be a casualty or a warrior. What’s it going to be?

I want to find my ‘inner warrior” as a Christian woman. Don’t you? My mind seems to be on fire, and I am hearing God’s voice boom, in part because of this book by Holly Wagner: below, Warrior Chicks: Rising Strong When Life Wants to Take You Down. I guarantee you will find this book life changing!

Holly Wagner’s Warrior Chicks has come into my life, like a best friend or gift. I spent a month in between blogging and day-to-day duties reading this book. It is short, but power packed. You will spend time reading and reading each chapter. You will not stop with reading this book. It inspires heart-felt prayer as you gobble down each page and nibble on the nuggets of loving truth found between the pages.

Holly is someone who knows about being a warrior. She battled cancer while copastoring Oasis Church in Los Angeles and reaching thousands of women through conferences, books, and other resources.

She knows a thing or two about taking up “a sword and shield” and facing an ugly giant of disease seeking to kill her voice and message for women. This book, however, only allows a small glimspe into her personal battles and struggles. She uses them as a springboard to inspire women everywhere to find their “inner warriors” no matter what they are facing in their lives.

The book is written in tight one- to three-sentence paragraphs that create a poetic form flowing across the pages that build the chapters that overflow with Biblical truths and challenges to each of us to rise up and accept the call of the Christian woman warrior.

We are needed on the frontlines, sisters! Holly urges us to rise up and make our personal differences and fulfill the dreams that Jesus dreamt for each of us on His Holy Cross. Yes, I really believe He saw each of us that accepted Him on that cross 2,000 years ago. He saw our lives. He implanted our dreams and purpose! In those hours on the cross, I believe He saw each of us bow our heads and accept Him and His callings! He saw us on that dark day as His beautiful followers.

Holly calls each of us “bellisima,” or “most beautiful” and writes:

“If we are to become effective warriors, the first war we must win is the war to believe that we are beautiful.” (p. 16)

Adding, “I wonder if it is a slap in God’s face when we don’t like who He made us to be and want something else. … We have a (God-given) role to play on the planet, and we will only be effective at doing it if we are comfortable in our own skin.”

Wow, did you just read those words. They are hard to believe aren’t they? I think this took four days to let this message sink in my 230 pound body of pain and what I saw as ugliness. I want to stop slapping God in the face. I am not going to see myself as ugly anymore. I am bellisima.

This book is a call for Christian women everywhere to join Jesus’s army — The Warrior Chicks! The neat thing is Jesus has already won the war. We just need to join in the fight to bring others into the victory. The challenge of this book is to “RISE UP” and realize victory is ours. No one around us needs to suffer alone. No one around us needs to face condemnation to a life in hell if we just join His Army of Victors!

I know you have read book reviews from me before that extol the greatness of the books I am reading. (I read great books on purpose by the way. I only choose books that are going to change lives!) This book will change your life if you read it. Better yet, take it to your pastor and let him or her read it. Propose a Bible study around it. It has a built in chapter-by-chapter, Bible study resource in the back of the book to get your started.

I have entered the fray and the battle through my blog. I know the battle belongs to the Lord and victory is His! I know I need to focus, put on my armor and get dressed, get ready for baton exchanges, recognize who is my Boss (Jesus) while realizing I will never be alone in the battles that He directs me toward. Whew, Thanks Holly!

If you need encouragement to join in, then, I highly recommend you read this book and share with the beautiful women in your circles!

I recevied a copy of this book from Revell in exchange for my honest review.

My Review:
What does it mean to be strong for the Lord and strong in the Lord? We are all over-comers if we are children of God. Women tend to let the submissive part of themselves give way to fear a lot of the times. Why? We are set apart, we are chosen to get on the front lines and fight for our families just as our husbands are. Holly Wagner gives us inspiration, encouragement and a lot of scripture to back this up. We have to take her words and apply them to our lives. She has herself become a survivor when she was delivered and healed of cancer.

Each day our world changes and because of this future generations can and will suffer for the evil one that abounds at every turn. So ladies rise up and fight! We can either be a casualty or a warrior!!

I looked through it and didn't feel compelled to read it but my friend loved it. Overall it's a uniquely written book sure to touch someone deeply. Chances are, you've been told to pick the battles that you fight in life. But what happens when the battles you face are the battles that have somehow found their way into your life and hand-picked you?

According to Holly Wagner, the Co-Pastor of Oasis Church in Los Angeles, we don't have the option of curling up in a corner, retreating from the battlefield, giving up, or giving in.

When darkness and chaos abound, the woman - the warrior - you - rise.

She should know. She learned what it takes to be a warrior when she faced a life versus death battle with cancer!

In her latest book, Warrior Chicks - Rising Strong When Life Wants To Take You Down, Holly says that we are either casualties or warriors in the battle of life, and it's up to us to choose.

In case you are the complacent type - in case you lean towards pacifism - Warrior Chicks is all about motivating and preparing you for battle.

Warrior Chicks is an easy-to-read, highly motivational book that discusses spiritual principles in battlefield terms - and rouses you to take up your sword.

Although this book is not currently available in audio form, I think it would be a great book to listen to and to read aloud.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

To say I liked this book would be such an understatement. I loved everything about the book, from the writing itself, the word choices, the relevant stories, even down to the way the book is formatted. With quick short sections, it’s like getting a proverb dose of wisdom in every page and that’s a major plus for the busy woman!

Warrior Chicks is for every woman who has ever had to endure hardship, struggles, or pain. It’s for any woman who has been hurt and had to fight her way back from depression, for the woman who needs a reminder that she is more than a soldier, she’s a warrior.

It’s like having a personal encourager, a best friend cheerleader, a fan club president speaking words of affirmation to you. Holly Wagner is author extraordinaire! She has a way of writing that includes deep, challenging stories. Oftentimes, I see the same stories used repeatedly in other books. The stories are good but almost overused. Holly Wagner uses stories and examples that are fresh and applicable driving home the lesson she’s teaching.

Warrior Chicks is on my top 10 best reads and it’s a book that I would recommend to every woman in whatever stage of battle training she may be in; whether she’s a new recruit or a seasoned warrior. Warrior Chicks is a book that stands heads above the rest.

I found this book inspiring as the author describes the definition of being a warrior and a soldier in life.

There are 11 chapters in this book and a study guide at the end. I liked the study guide because at the end of each chapter, you can refer to the questions in the back, so it can be used as a personal journal or group study. There are typically 7-9 questions per chapter you can answer.

The author uses scriptures and personal experiences throughout the book which I really enjoyed. I did find it a little odd and annoying that the book was written in multiple sentences without alot of spacing, and not in paragraph form.

Whether you are discouraged or going through personal life battles; hopefully you will find this book helpful and inspiring to become a warrior and fight! God has made us in his own image and perfectly and He wants us to find joy in the journey!

This book makes many good points that I will definitely heed in the future. I like the idea of women being warriors. When I hear that, I picture Katniss Everdeen or Rose Hathaway from previous books I've read. I want to be a strong woman, and I know that God will help me in that journey of development.
I need to point out some things that I didn't really like about this book and these are small things. Whenever I read Christian Living books, there's always a sense of the author being a little self-righteous. Perhaps that's just some pessimism coming from me, but I don't know. It bothers me a little. The other thing that I didn't like was the format. Did there have to be half-inch gaps between each sentence? And what's with the repetition of points? I just think Wagner could have used other tactics to drive the information home.

When I heard God whisper to me to trust Him with my healing of depression, and that it was time to come off the anti-depressants I had been on for 3 years, I read this book.

The title caught my eye. I knew that I had a battle ahead of me physically, spiritually and mentally in overcoming depression. I was not disappointed by this book.

Holly Wagner wrote this book as she battled with breast cancer. I learned so much about what it means to be a warrior from this book, from a female perspective.

The wisdom in this book prepared and helped me in my battle with depression and helped me slay the dragon for good.

Given to me by a dear friend, I wasn't sure what to expect, especially considering I haven't attended church in years; though I do have a very active relationship with my creator. Regardless of your religious persuasion, the stories and lessons presented will speak to any woman looking to find a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment in her life. A quick and enjoyable read. I recommend to anyone in search of a new perspective.

I used this book to help teach a teen girl class. It had some good topics/points, however, it is written basically as a stream of consciousness. Very difficult from which to teach. I usually had to add many of my own Bible verses or stories to go along with her points, and just use her stories to enhance the lessons. It is probably better as a solo read instead of using it to teach a class.

This book is wonderful for any Christian gal in need of some encouragement. It's a super easy read too because the paragraphs are so tiny. The message is uplifting and very positive, about being an over-comer and following the plans God has for your life.

I found this in a thrift store while on my honeymoon trip to my husband's home town. I had picked it up purely off the title, which I felt was both inspiring - who doesn't want to be a warrior, rising strong? - and yet also a little patronizing, what with the chick-and-pink theme.

The writing on this is plain, very direct, and on occasion the sentences will run
down
the
page
in a rather annoying manner. I think the author meant for it to add emphasis, but instead sometimes it reads like terribly written poetry that teenaged me would have made out of fridge magnets.

For all it's flaws it's still a good devotional for a beginner Christian, which I was/am. I did find it inspiring in parts, and I definitely would recommend it to someone who needs a swift kick-in-the-butt coaching session like I often do, but the directness may be off-putting for others.

A friend got me this book, so I wanted to like it but....I just didn't. I hated the author's writing style and I didn't like her interpretation of the Bible verses. I'm not super religious so it was difficult for me to get through. The author is a pastor, but she really seemed to reach at times to connect things to the Bible that didn't need to be. At the end of the book, there was a section with questions to consider and that was the best part.

Open the cover to Warrior Chicks, and it is immediately apparent that this is not like every other book that you have encountered on the subject of following God through hard circumstances. Holly Wagner writes in consecutive and vivid word pictures, and although I have never met her, I can predict that this is also how she would speak if we were face to face over a cup of tea.

A ministry wife and mother, Holly received a cancer diagnosis that changed her life, for in the midst of her fight for survival, she discovered a grit and tenacity that applies to more than just the life and death struggle against disease.

Truly, we are all in a daily struggle to be a winner — not a whiner;
to rise and shine, when the natural reaction would be to fall and fade;
to focus on the goal of healthy living, inside and out;
to successfully pass the baton of faith on to the next generation — to the next person God brings across our path.

This warrior mindset is only possible in Christ, and only with the conscious, stamped-on-your-eyeballs-awareness that the Christian life is one of war-time camaraderie with a living body of fellow believers who are also fellow warriors. We prepare ourselves for battle — not with the pumps and pantyhose of weak theology and silly-girl excuses, but with the armor of God which rivets our thinking to truth, protects our hearts from distractions, shields our souls from faithless fear, and encases us in a righteousness that transcends our own.

THIS DAY. THIS BATTLE. Our Commanding Officer reveals His plans in His own good time, and then provides faith to carry them out. We, as warriors, follow best when we are properly trained, vigilant, and seeking to do more for God’s glory, for it is this that guards against a victim mentality. Rather than asking, “Why?” when disaster strikes, the Warrior Chick has a better question on her lips:
What do I need to learn?
Who can I help?
How can I help them?
Rich in scriptural exhortation and biblical stories that put flesh on the bones of her argument, Holly Wagner has thrown down the challenge: Lie down and give in or stand up and fight as the overcomer that God enables you to be.

So, what’s it going to be?

Life is hard. Sometimes it’s big events—cancer, a death in the family, divorce—other times it’s the day-to-day living. Whether it’s one big thing or a hundred small things, sometimes it seems like life truly does want to take us down. And then we have two choices: go down or rise strong.

Wagner, founder of the GodChick ministry, wrote Warrior Chicks several years ago in response to her own personal journey through one of life’s big events. Revell re-released the book this year, and this was my first experience with it.

After 18 months of “big events” in my own life, coupled with the day-to-day living of working nearly full time, trying to pursue my own dreams in life, being a wife to an employee and grad student and a mother to three girls—the oldest with anxiety, the middle with a sensory processing disorder, and the youngest full of extreme stubbornness—and selling our house and moving into another, I am both exhausted and feeling down for the count. In that frame of mind, I was excited to get this book and fought for time to sit down and read it. In some ways I wasn’t disappointed. In others, I feel a bit let down.

Warrior Chicks is written in what I call “blog” format. The paragraphs are mostly one to two sentences long. Wagner includes in them motivational thoughts and words but not a lot of new information. It really seems more like a speech or a rallying cry and less like tips or support in how to actually rise strong. It provides you with the want to and the inspiration but not the training you might need, though Wagner does address the need for this physical, emotional, and spiritual training. For me, the format was difficult to get through. When I could finally look past that, I did finish the book feeling inspired.

The cover of the book has boxing gloves (pink, of course). Warrior Chicks isn’t going to be the daily training a boxer needs to make it into the ring or the muscles and body building required, but it will be the pep talk in the corner after each round to get you back out there, ready to keep fighting.

Life is never easy. There is a lot that happens in our life that is beyond our control. Maybe you’re dealing with a cancer diagnosis, the choices your children are making, a spouse who leaves, disappointments in our careers, or even a broken heart. Did you know that amongst these tragedies is a choice that we can still make?

Lie down and give in or stand up and fight.

Before I go even further, you might be wondering what on earth does being a warrior have to do with this.

“A warrior is one who is engaged aggressively in or experienced in battle. A warrior possesses the dedication money can’t buy. A warrior is someone who fights, not because of what she is getting out of it, but because of what she can give. A warrior is a soldier with a “die for the cause” attitude. A warrior will do whatever it takes to ensure victory. A soldier signs up to join the fight, a warrior stays until it is finished.”

(Wagner, Holly. Warrior Chicks: Rising Strong When Life Wants to Take You Down. Grand Rapids: Revell, 2015. Print.)

During your reading of Warrior Chicks, you will find yourself laughing and crying, but overall, inspired to leave the state of victimhood and to stand up and rise to the challenge. Holly Wagner challenges women everywhere to enlist as Warrior Chicks. She shows us that we are beautiful just the way we are, that we are overcomers, and that the battle has already been won for us. She will share the secrets of how to equip ourselves and prepare for battle and that it is more than just trying to survive. Holly shares her own personal story and shows you how you can either be a victim or a warrior that overcomes.

This is a book that you will not want to miss out on. It is geared for women of all ages going through all stages of life. It doesn’t matter what challenge you are facing, this book is for you. Holly shares truth and points us to the cross of Jesus Christ.

It is also a powerful resource for ministry. It is perfect for therapists, leading small groups, or just individual use.

Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

This is an empowering book about relying on God, surviving the battles of life, and being beautiful just the way you are! It's definitely an inspiring and encouraging book!
One thing I really loved about this book is that it doesn't just encourage you to survive through the dark places in life, but to also overcome that darkness and come out on the other side with inner light that you can shine onto others.

While it is inspiring, the stories that are told are pretty generic. Stories that we have heard many times, like those of Susan B Anthony or Helen Keller, are still inspiring and encouraging but lose their flavor after awhile. It would have been nice to see some new stories, and would've made for a fresher look at Christianity from a woman's perspective.

The writing is clear, concise, and speaks with a forceful voice, and a soul-calling to search for God. Every spiritual concept is set forth coherently, and in a logical manner that is easy to understand. The best part is that the author speaks from a personal place, and is vulnerable and honest and open, bringing high spiritual ideas into the relatable human realm.

My only real problem with this book was the organization of the paragraphs and sentences. Sentences that belong together in a paragraph are all separated in a long line down the page. This makes for very disjointed reading, and makes it difficult to focus on any one idea. I suppose it was done to emphasize particular ideas, but it had the opposite effect that made me want to skim down the page instead of focusing on the central concept. This continued through the entire book making it difficult to read or concentrate.

While this book is perfect for any Christian woman or girl going through some sort of trial, it does not have a great deal of depth, but focuses more on simple truths that every Christian should hold close to their hearts. For my personal taste, I prefer devotional books or self-help books that have more spiritual meat and deeper doctrine. But sometimes a simpler read is just what one needs.

Holly Wagner in her new book, “Warrior Chicks” published by Revell gives us Rising Strong When Life Wants to Take You Down.

From the Back Cover: There is a lot in life we cannot control–a cancer diagnosis, the choices our children make, a spouse who leaves, disappointments in our career, a broken heart. But in those tragedies, big and small, we still have a choice:

Lie down and give in or stand up and fight.

In this inspiring call to arms against victimhood, Holly Wagner challenges women to enlist as Warrior Chicks. She shows women that they are beautiful just the way they are, they are destined to be overcomers in this life, and that the battle is already won for us. She shares the secrets of being equipped to fight the good fight and do more than just survive. As one who has battled many things in her life, including breast cancer, Holly shows how you can be either a casualty of the pain or a warrior who overcomes.

So what’s it going to be?
Holly Wagner found out that Proverbs 31, “rise while it is yet night” has nothing to do with the time of day you get up. Ms. Wagner found out that it has everything to do with being a woman who “rises” in the midst of hard times. When darkness and chaos abound, the woman, the warrior – you – rise. This is what Warrior Chicks is all about. In eleven chapters Ms. Wagner takes women on a journey to see that no woman has been called to be a casualty. All women have been called to be warriors and that no one can take what is thrown at them and give up. Warrior is an attitude. There is even a study guide at the end. It would also be a great gift for friends and family so that they be helped as well.

Life is comprised of the moments we expect. And those which are unexpected.

It is those unexpected times, the ones out of our control, which we struggle with the most …

loneliness
a colicky baby
a broken marriage
a broken heart
a cancer diagnosis
poor choices
unemployment

Yet it is in those very moments, we must dig deeply into our faith, our relationship with God, and into His Word to find the strength to fight.

In her book, Warrior Chicks, Holly Wagner seeks to help us “rise strong when life wants to take you down.” The concept of the book is a much needed one. There is not a woman alive who does not need encouragement and inspiration to persevere through difficult seasons of life.

Yet the book fell short for me. While the author included many examples from history and literature, there was little encouragement from Scripture. There was more of a bent towards positive thinking, and what one can do to fix their own life, which I found disappointing.

I also found the manner in which the book was laid out to be distracting to my thoughts. Paragraphs were very short, mostly one lined sentences which seemed to jump from thought to thought with little development or continuity. As I continued to read on, I lost interest and skipped to various sections of the book, hoping to regain my thoughts.

This is a good book for someone looking for a motivational or easy read. However, in my opinion, it will not deepen one’s understanding of Scripture. I also hope you will check out the reviews of others as well for many enjoyed the book.

As the back of the books says, there are a lot of things that come our way that we cannot control. It’s not about what comes at us, it’s about how we meet those challenges – victor or victim.

In this book, Warrior Chicks, the author Holly Wagner shares her own story, including her battle with breast cancer, of how you can be an overcomer and not overcome. This book is filled with practical and powerful and will encourage you to engage in your life. This is an inspiring book to be read and shared with the women in your life that are in the midst of their battle. Show them how to be a survivor warrior.

By the title, you can guess that this book is focused on helping women to be strong. Clearly, this is a laudable goal.

There are some concepts within the book that I enjoyed, particularly those with imagery. For instance, one chapter talks about suiting up with the armor of God. Who won't need the shield of faith at some point in her life? Very relevant. Another chapter tells us that the wind actually strengthens the tree. This certainly helps us to think of trials in a new way. A third chapter talks about the importance of sharing our story with younger generations and "passing the baton". These are all helpful encouragement.

However, for me, the writing is very distracting. I think the author intends to make her messages powerful and direct by using short sentences and having lots of one sentence paragraphs.
