Have Cowboy, Need Cupid is part of the Hartwell Hope Chests series by Rita Herron. It’s no secret that I have a huge weakness for cowboys. I have stacks of books in my house from used book sales and thought I’d read all the westerns but surprise, I found one I missed.

Suzanne Hartwell works for Horton Developers in Atlanta. She thought her life was full, she was a successful business woman. Her company is trying to buy up some land in the town her sister and cousins live in, Sugar Hill, to build a huge mall. The land they need is owned by a rancher, Rafe McAllister. It’s Suzanne’s job to travel to Sugar Hill and convince Rafe that selling his land would be best for both him and the town.

Suzanne’s sister has just gotten married and of course, Suzanne caught the bouquet. Shortly after the wedding, her Grammy Rose presented Suzanne with a hope chest. Grammy Rose’s hope chests were well known for having a sort of mystical ability to be exactly what it’s recipient needed, even when they didn’t know it themselves. But the things that Suzanne found inside her hope chest made no sense at all.

Rafe McAllister is a proud man. The Lazy M Ranch has been his home his entire life. Every memory he has of growing up was on this ranch. Rafe’s father passed away from a heart attack and has left the ranch deeply in debt. Plus the fact that his mother is not well. He’s trying to handle the financial problems without worrying his mother but he’s starting to worry that he’s not going to find a way out of this hole he is in. He is determined not to sell, though.

“The Lazy M was his ranch. His Legacy. The land had belonged to his father and his daddy before him and his daddy before him. Somehow they had all managed to hold on to the place because the McAllisters believed that if a man had land, he had a place to build a life. Without it, a man couldn’t survive.”

The first time Rafe saw Suzanne, he could tell she was a city girl. But there was just something about her. As soon as he held her in his arms to dance, he knew he wanted more. But what did he have to offer this woman, or any woman?

Suzanne can’t deny that she is attracted to Rafe, but her job is to convince him to sell his ranch. He doesn’t know who she works for but he knows she is in favor of the new development. When he invites her to his ranch to teach her to ride and show her the beauty of the ranch, she readily agrees, thinking that it is the perfect opportunity to convince him to sell. What happens instead is that she meets and falls in love with his mother. She also sees the beauty he has told her about. She sees just why this land is so important to Rafe and his mother.

“You were born in the wrong time period, Mr. McAllister.”
“Why’s that? Because I believe in tradition.”
“Because you hold on to the past.”

kissing a cowboy:

I loved this book. Rafe and Suzanne were both proud, stubborn people, both believing they had all they needed without love. Both so wrong. But what will happen when Rafe discovers who Suzanne really works for and what brought her to Sugar Hill? Would he ever understand or forgive her?

“He had thought there was nothing more beautiful than horses running free over the mountainside, nothing more dangerous than a wild one, fighting to run free. He suddenly realized he was wrong. Suzanne Hartwell was both heartstoppingly beautiful and wild. And far more dangerous.

Would she break his heart if he opened himself up to her, or would she turn out to be the sensitive caring woman he sensed lay beneath the surface of her beautiful tough-girl façade?”

If you enjoy western themed romances set in small close knit towns with beautiful scenery, then you will enjoy this book. The characters are easy to love and you can’t help but to want them to get their HEA. This book will definitely leave you with a warm heart and a smile on your face.

“For the first time in his life he wanted something more than his land. More than the ranch and raising cattle and breaking horses. He wanted Suzanne.”
