Vilmar addresses many 19th century concerns that are still with us today. This book is short but not a quick read. The translation is not wooden, but also doesn't seem to attempt to smooth Vilmar's German into today's English.
Anyone who laments the decline of academia into the trap of always looking for something new will find that this is not a new problem. Vilmar traces the negative consequences of this especially in the subject of theology.
Likewise anyone who senses that the Church has gotten of track will appreciate Vilmar diagnosis of how become lax on confession has led to a host of problems for the church. Those problem have only deepened through the twentieth century as the ecumenical movement has largely picked up what Vilmar's rhetoricians began.
