The House in Tuesday Market

Rate this book

Sensational courtroom drama, unlikely chain of events, stereotypical characters, a sense of the occult - this mystery has it all. What a great intro to the world of J.S. Fletcher!

Atmospheric rather than suspenseful. The new owner of the titular house decides to pry open a nailed down window-seat after a friend assures him that corner of the room emanates spooky vibes. And what does he find? The embalmed corpse of a solicitor whose disappearance, 10 years earlier, has remained the talk of the town. A note setting an assignation hints at the involvement of a woman.

Gaisford, the new owner of the house, his friend Tapper and his lawyer neighbor are convinced that the local police is taking too simplistic a view of the case, and do some sleuthing of their own.

This is a story of tea by the fire, mysterious notes, beautiful women, suspicious purchases of embalming supplies, a quick dash to the Continent to verify someone's whereabouts from ten years ago. All good stuff, if not particularly suspenseful. Ideal for reading on a dark winter afternoon.

Consigliato.

I live in Beverley and know of the house in Wednesday Market which was used as inspiration for the book. It was written in the style of the time and I started reading the book on a cold winter's afternoon in front of a roaring fire. It has a clever twist at the end.
