The Disney film Pocahontas is already known for its amount of inaccuracies so don't want to really revisit those. Instead I hope just to focus my review on this particular book instead.

This Margo Lundell adaptation is basically a summarized retelling of the film although condensed to allow the book be written for the target audience of children who may or may not have seen the film. As such secondary scenes have been removed while the scenes left within the pages are basically trimmed to mere bones that don't really capture the essence of the Disney film at all.

What makes it worse is also the focus. When the reader is introduced to John Smith and then sees the meeting between him and Pocahontas for the first time they are told then reminded of how handsome he is. Why does his looks matter? And I mean really why, especially when nothing is mentioned of Pocahontas' looks in comparison.

The illustrations are more or less taken from the film but I found it disturbing in looking back that for whatever reason they chose to portray the chief's daughter with her mouth open while looking shocked most of the time even in a place where she shouldn't be. Second of all in sync with my discomfort of the fact that Smith was mentioned as being handsome is an illustration in which I feel dirty just by the way they are portraying all the characters since basically it looks like an adult scene.

In the end if you must have Disney's Pocahontas I would highly recommend just sticking with the film and avoiding this particular book at all costs.

Aside from the atrocity that is the real story the Disney story is based upon (I won't get into that here though).. This story loosely follows the cartoon movie, trimmed down to hopefully keep a young reader's attention.

Too many of the pictures have Pocahontas looking like she's having an orgasm, instead of in a book aimed at children.

Also it starts off talking about how handsome John Smith is, and the writing comes off as Pocahontas falls in love with him because he's just so handsome. Definitely a book I hope to avoid reading again in the future!

It was written in 1996- so I can get why the writer may have called them indians instead of natives, but that definitely wouldn't fly if the book was published now.

Pocahontas is about a young Native American woman who meets John Smith, an Englishman that came to Virginia to help Governor Ratcliffe find gold. Pocahontas is engaged to be married to a stoic man in her tribe and is unsure about it. After spending time with John Smith and learning about each others cultures, she finds out who she is and what she wants.
This is a historical fiction story because it was based in the 1600's. The characters are real people, but the story is has fictional elements. The illustrations are mainly one paged with text in white space on top or the bottom. There are a couple pages that are a double spread for the more important scenes. The text and illustration are symmetrical. Readers read what they'll see. I give this book a three out five stars because I think the content is too much for young readers.
