This is the second in the Liverpool crime series featuring Johnny Ace. Johnny starts investigating the murder of Bert's son, Bradley, an aging singing star. Strangely, Bert is adamant that he will be killed next. But what did Bradley have to hide? And why would that now threaten Bert's life?
Following on from Ears of the city, this is the second in the Johnny Ace crime series. Johnny is a Liverpool DJ, who once played in a band during the Merseybeat era. Now he spends his time buying and renting out properties, as well as doing a radio show. In the first book he almost fell into being a private detective and now his talents are called on again. When Bradley, from Bradley and the Baronets, is found floating dead in the Mersey, his elderly father Bert asks Johnny to find out who murdered him. He claims that Bradley was being blackmailed because of a dark family secret, but as Johny begins to investigate, he finds almost everybody concerned has a secret to conceal.
Johnny is a likeable hero, who dislikes being tied down and has several girlfriends, including the equally commitment-phobe nurse Hilary and librarian Maria, who helps Johnny in his cases but would prefer him to become marriage material. However, all Johnny's friends and acquaintances help to give Johnny a well rounded and realistic persona and make the series more enjoyable, as it is like meeting old friends as you pick up the books. This has long been one of my favourite crime series and I am delighted to see the books are being re-released on kindle. As in the previous book the answers to the mystery lie in the past and when Johnny discovers another member of the Baronets has died in dubious circumstances he knows he has to find out what is going on before there are more deaths. This is a really good novel and the Merseybeat links give it a really unique flavour. I hope the rest of the series find their way onto kindle soon.
