Michel Thomas
382 books30 followersMichel Thomas (born Moniek (Moshe) Kroskof, February 3, 1914 – January 8, 2005) was a polyglot linguist, language teacher, and decorated war veteran. He survived imprisonment in several different Nazi concentration camps after serving in the Maquis (World War II) of the French Resistance and worked with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps during World War II. After the war, Thomas emigrated to the United States, where he developed a language-teaching system known as the Michel Thomas Method. In 2004 he was awarded the Silver Star by the U.S. Army.

Listening to Michel swalling saliva for 9 hours is very irritating. The content is good however one of the students is very bad and I would question how usefull it is listening to someone constantly making mistakes.

An absolute must-have for students learning Spanish! The book is easy to follow and is very streamlined. I learn tons on tenses and how to conjugate verbs. This book is a treasure!

I love the way Michel Thomas teaches. He breaks down a language and introduces it to you in a way that anybody can understand. It also helps that Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn for an English speaker. On top of that, already having a foundation in Portuguese, it makes Spanish even easier for me.
He uses a lot of repetition by going over the same words for a while, but in different word orders for different phrases. He asks you how to say a particular phrase in Spanish, and you have to hit the pause button, then give yourself time to think out the answer. Once you go over the same words over and over again, it sinks into your memory.
I'm already able to construct my own sentences in Spanish. I don't have to memorise whole phrases at all. This is what's so great about the MT method. He teaches you how to put sentences together instinctively.
By the way, this version teaches Latin American Spanish. Although, I'm aiming for Castilian Spanish. But the differences are very subtle anyhow, so it's simple for me to correct the differences on my own.
I'll be honest and admit I wasn't as interested in Spanish. But after getting into it, MT makes me want to strive harder to learn it properly!
