This second volume covering Hebrews 9 to 13 provides a great resource for anyone seeking to take a deep dive into Hebrews. Although this commentary is geared at scholars and people who know Greek, much can be gleaned by the dedicated reader about the content and context of the book. A solid resource.

Excellent scholarship. Like volume 1, the author writes clearly and thoroughly on the content of Hebrews. Lane also was consistent about identifying where other scholars have landed on their interpretations and applications of Hebrews both when it aligns with his ideas and contrasts with his ideas.

Good commentary, but difficult for navigating.

Like most commentaries, meant to be consulted, not read. Don’t know why I torture myself. Without transcending into the fun-to-read elevations, it remains at the peak of good-to-consult.

A good, broadly evangelical commentary on Hebrews, which I am using in my own narrative commentary on the epistle to the Hebrews. It was good merely and not great because of his fascination with extra-Biblical Jewish and Christian traditions which he believes influenced the author of Hebrews. Instead of seeking intertextual connections to the Old Testament, Lane is obsessed with exploring possible connections to Philo, the Wisdom of Solomon and other second-temple Jewish material. Yet I have consistently found the better and more internally consistent connection to some piece of OT theology in Hebrews, and not one firm association to these extra-Biblical sources. The point is rendered moot anyway when you realize such sources are essentially relying upon the OT anyway, so why not just go to the source in the first place?

The positives to the book were the constant understanding of terms in Hebrews, such as "drawing near" and "sanctified" as cultic references to Jewish Temple/Tabernacle worship, the same words employed by the LXX for descriptions of the sacrifices and so on. This was really helpful in rooting Hebrews in the cultic worship of the OT tabernacle, which plays at the thematic and symbolic core to the book.

Excellent commentary. Even though Arminian, enough information to disagree and work with what you can agree.
