A tested approach to learning biblical Hebrew in an ideal package for the first-year Hebrew student. This clear, accurate, and pedagogically sound textbook emphasizes the Hebrew phonology (sounds) and morphology (forms). This grammar does not use jargon or technical language, but uses terms easily understood and remembered so biblical Hebrew can be used with regularity and authority.
This was a helpful guide in taking Hebrew. While the book and the retention of knowledge is heavily dependent upon the accompanying lesson work book, it is a valuable and use book that explains the complexities of the Hebrew language. It is written in an easy to follow manner and the chapters are broken up in small portions to make the task feel less daunting.
The attentiveness to proto-hebrew phonology and morphology is invaluable. How he charts the progression of spelling specifically with nouns was very helpful.
This made me excited to read his section on the verbal system. Unfortunately I found this section unclear, hard to reference, and altogether unhelpful. He uses a color code system to describe thematic vowel changes and tries to show how morphology happens, albeit with low accessibility. Much of how he treats the verbal system lacks clarity and approachability.
Good introductory grammar. Works best in a class setting and with the accompanying workbook. From what I hear, this is one of the least technical Hebrew grammars out there, but it is still quite technical at times.
