Bake You a Pie [With CD]

Rate this book
Sure to provoke giggles, this book is an increasingly silly tour through different musical styles (and, of course, pies!) As one by one, sweet young'uns ask for and receive their favorite pie, readers feast upon bluegrass and gospel, opera, jazz, rock 'n' roll, and more. They might even be inspired to make up their own crazy kind of pie and sing out loud!

I absolutely ADORE this book. It comes with a companion CD in which all sorts of musical styles are explored with each turn of the page - gospel, blues, rock-n-roll, country, cajun, bluegrass, techno, jazz - you name it. Every verse is some little baby that's ravenous and needs consoling with food - a pie. The pie flavors are correlated to the musical genres. The baby's names are a subtle nod to a famous composer or performer of that style. Opera = 'Luciano was a sweet little tenor, he was so hungry he cried. I said, "Don't you cry, I'll bake you a pie. I'll bake you an eggplant parmesan pie." ' or 'Hank was a sweet little cowboy, he was so hungry he cried. I said, "Don't you cry, I'll bake you a pie. I'll bake you a cactus meringue pie." ' My students ask for this one repeatedly.

I'm a big fan of pie so when I met the author of this book at an SCBWI conference, I was interested in reading this book. An ode to pie, it also comes with a cd that offers up slices of musical pie - from hepcat to gospel choir to cowboy singing, a great variety of musical styles is showcased. Learning about different styles of music will slide down as easily as ... well a slice of lemon meringue...or blueberry... or chocolate pudding pie.

I read such a rave review of this that I ILL'd it to see it for myself. It is pretty amazing. Repeating chorus except for little changes, but each page is a different style of music (blueberry pie - bluegrass, sweet potato pie - gospel, eggplant parmesan pie - opera...). The CD is a must - not sure how I'd work it into a program, but I'm definitely putting it on our library wish list.

This is a really interesting little book. It's fun to see how each child's pie corresponds with a different type of music. The CD is great, since each page of the book is sung in the corresponding music style. Cool!

Cute song, fun illustrations and a nice series of nods to various musical genres. Definitely worth checking out of the library.
