It compiles about 160 letters from the Qing Tao-kuang 30 years to Tongzhi 10 years, in total 30 years. The letters involve a wide range of subjects, from chores and livelihood of families to improving his virtue , refining his achievement and rejuvenating our nation.It vividly reflects his main activities of governing politics, country and academic discipline. The sentences in letters are golden sayings about ideal, spiritual realm and moral training.

家书不是最好的记载方式，但还是可以从一个侧面了解当时社会和生活的面貌。相比而下，现代普通人的生活好的多了。比如曾国藩说在京做官经常缺钱需要东借西凑（但“尚不窘迫”）。记载从湘潭到京的路程（十二月廿一日启程，正月廿八日到）。讲述自己的身体状况（掉过一颗牙，还有皮肤问题）。

家书中记载些许政事，比如朝廷查账发现近千万两银子不对数；广东徐总督不让英夷入城，“圣心嘉悦之至”；自己谏疏“其言频过激切，而圣量如海，尚能容纳，岂汉唐以下之英主所可及”；后来带兵讨贼”百姓焚香于辫顶，脆岸上欢迎，呼各勇为青天大人“等。更多的是家里的杂事，比如上次寄回十斤冬菜，下次让家里寄十斤茶叶，嘱咐还谁家的银子，另外就是教育晚辈读书的老生常谈。
