This volume collects the first five issues of the hilarity-packed and thrill-inducing series, Zombies vs. Cheerleaders, including every hot cover and a brand-new story exclusive to this trade! Reprinting the first three issues of ZvC, the "Geektacular" special with the 3 Geeks, and the "Flips Out" story!
You can probably judge this one by its covers. Yes it’s juvenile with no saving grace inside. It is indeed the equivalent of an awful B movie with a creepy director and the usual old stereotypes written in. It’s product for sale seems to be mostly in the looks and name dept with a few awesome covers (which look nothing on the the level of the art inside) it’s enough to gain hopeful attention so that publishing can make a few bucks through licensing. It’s a familiar title just waiting to be picked up. I bought issue #2 for the cover as a Halloween framed deco. It has one of the best covers with a stylized bubblegum chewing chick sawing up zombies with a chainsaw for ten bucks. The inside cover has the pencils of that artwork which is awesome. The entire digital comic is available online. It’s a bunch of little stories quickly written up by various teams. Nothing worth keeping physically except for a few covers.
Reprints the first three issues of Zombies vs Cheerleaders, the crossover with The 3 Geeks, and another random story -- plus one new story. The first issue was what you'd expect -- a mash-up of zombie movie troupes with high-school movie troupes, and it was funny I guess. But in subsequent issues, there is no continuity with that first issue, there's just different stories about zombies and cheerleaders! Some of them zombie stories which didn't have to have cheerleaders (but do), but most use both themes. But they do all get weirder as it goes on. I don't know if it's good or not, but it is interesting to see so many variations on a theme!
This graphic novel had, for me, some hit and miss artwork and stories.
This is more of an anthology than a straight run at a story. It follows the long "fight" between zombies and cheerleaders.
I was expecting daft, predictable humor. Stereotypes were obviously involved and the stories were purely tongue and cheek, but I would have preferred on story and not many different and extremely short ones.
"Zombies vs. Cheerleaders" is a collection of stories ranging from 1 to 10 or so pages by different teams of creators. As a result, this volume is very uneven. The real problem is that even cheesy horror relies on an emotional investment in the characters, and there is none of that present in these stories. Every character is a mere caricature--horror movie nerd, airhead cheerleader, dumb jock--to the point that the best outcome of some stories was the zombies winning!
The gem of this collection is the story of how the grandmother met her husband of 50 years and its surprise ending (don't spoil it!). Artwork is consistently good throughout, if extremely over-the-top and showcasing an adolescent view of sexuality. I enjoyed the concept and was entertained by it, but it is the comic equivalent of a Ding-Dong guiltily eaten in the dark.
A fun & lighthearted take on the zombie genre; it's chock full on scantily clad cheerleaders fighting for their lives. Smartly written, I was surprised by a number of plot twists that subverted my expectations, and delivered some great stories.
