Dick King-Smith was born and raised in Gloucestershire, England, surrounded by pet animals. After twenty years as a farmer, he turned to teaching and then to writing children's books.

Dick writes mostly about animals: farmyard fantasy, as he likes to call it, often about pigs, his special favorites. He enjoys writing for children, meeting the children who read his books, and knowing that they get enjoyment from what he does.

Among his well-loved books is Babe, The Gallant Pig, which was recently made into a major motion picture, and was nominated for an Academy Award.

Dick lived with his wife in a small 17th-century cottage, about three miles from the house where he was born.

Ideal for those new to the author, in that he is so prolific the samples here will give you ideas about where to start. Good for fans like me, because of the new stories. I'm not a big fan of the illustrator - most of King-Smith's are much better illustrated. I will continue to seek out his works wherever I can find them.

This is a lovely compilation of short stories about cats, dogs, mice, hedgehogs and a rather famous pig. Some of the characters may already be familiar to young readers and include Babe who wants to be a Sheep-pig, and Max the Hodgeheg who has bumped his head and consequently says his sentences back-to-front. My personal favourite is ‘The Excitement of Being Ernest’. Ernest is a friendly farm dog of indeterminate breed who is intimidated by the other dogs living in the village who all have impeccable pedigrees. He is entered into the Village Fete’s Grand Dog Show by his owner despite his misgivings, and is rewarded for his affectionate disposition.

The stories are delightful, light-hearted and beautifully illustrated. This book is guaranteed to appeal to children starting to read independently as they can dip into it without being daunted by lots of pages, or for the teacher to read aloud at the end of the day. The positive messages about tolerance, friendship and bravery are understated but can easily be carried into a classroom setting for PSHE.

An excellent collection of stories for children, I loved reading them when I was that age.
