Dick King-Smith was born and raised in Gloucestershire, England, surrounded by pet animals. After twenty years as a farmer, he turned to teaching and then to writing children's books.

Dick writes mostly about animals: farmyard fantasy, as he likes to call it, often about pigs, his special favorites. He enjoys writing for children, meeting the children who read his books, and knowing that they get enjoyment from what he does.

Among his well-loved books is Babe, The Gallant Pig, which was recently made into a major motion picture, and was nominated for an Academy Award.

Dick lived with his wife in a small 17th-century cottage, about three miles from the house where he was born.

One day Pete bought a mouse and he named it Nice. Mum and Dad didn't want him to have a mouse because they're smelly and cause too much trouble. Nice had babies.

We liked the beginning when Pete bought his mouse and the end when Nice had babies and Pete didn't expect it.

Boys and girls will like the story. People ages 1 - 20 years old will like it too.

10/10 because the story is fun and funny.

Every Saturday is mouseday for pete. Pete is a little boy who really wants a pet mouse but his parents refuse to let him have a mouse in their house. He listened to these words very carefully and highlights that his parents did not mention that he can't have a mouse in his tree house. So, without his parents knowing, he began to prepare his tree house for his pink eyed white mouse. Pete along with his best friend went to buy his mouse, who he named Nice, from the pet shop and he began to spend a lot of time in his tree house. The story is a short fun read and made me think about the pets I really wanted when I was young! The story can be used in key stage one, children can explore settings for example describing the tree house. This can be further linked to art and design where children can make/design their own tree house.

A very accessible chapter book for young readers (6-8) who are developing their independent reading skills. This sweet tale is all about Pete who is determined to own a pet mouse despite his parents refusal to have one in the house. There is lots of scope for whole class discussion about the importance of careful planning and taking ownership of achieving your goals, looking after pets and keeping secrets if used as a read aloud text in the classroom.
