Whispers

Rate this book
A collection of two short stories, and a memoir vignette.

These three tales range in setting from the lonely solitude of a high mountain trail, to a quiet suburban neighborhood, to the stress-filled halls of a Children's hospital.

In THE SIMPLEST OF SOUNDS a young boy faces his fears and the end of his childhood over the barrel of a gun.

WHITE SHUTTERS is the story of a mother-to-be facing her past past with the hope she can embrace her future.

And the title story, WHISPERS, chronicles the author's own journey into fatherhood.

Collectively the trio of stories share a bond rooted in the most abstract of human emotions ... fear, hope, and love.

I am a native Texan who now calls sunny Southern California home. Long before I figured out I wanted to be writer, I was an avid reader. I write humor books and articles about sports and music and food and anything else that strikes my fancy. But mostly I write Women’s Fiction.

Yes, I know it's a little odd for a six-foot-five, two- hundred, and too-many-pounds man to write “girly stuff” but what can I do. I have to write the stories that fill my head, because I’m obligated to be the voice for these characters since they’re not going to shut up either way. At least on paper I can act like they exist for a reason. Otherwise, I’m just a guy with multiple personalities.

This ebook contains three stories, two being fictional and one a memoir. The three pieces are very different, but I feel they complement each other well in this collection.

The first story, The Simplest of Sounds, is a first-person present account of a man coming to grips with a terrible incident from his youth. It flows well, and I appreciated that the author assumed I could follow the transitions between a hunting trip in the present and a life-changing night taking place two decades earlier.

The second story, White Shutters, is a wonderful slice-of-life tale about a woman facing a difficult decision from her past. I loved the complicated motivations of the characters and the untangling of what happened to make their meeting so emotional.

The autobiographical piece is about the birth of the author's son. The author's voice shines, and it brought back the memories of my own son being born. I imagine it was a hard story to share, but I'm glad it was included.

This is a short but very sweet collection of stories at a good price. It took me less than an hour to read the whole thing, but it was an hour well-spent. This is my first time to read Travis Erwin, and I definitely plan to follow it up with his Twisted Roads.

This is a novella length collection consisting of two stories, “The Simplest of Sounds” and “White Shutters,” and a memoir piece called “Whispers.”

All are simply outstanding. Reading them is like touching a circuit alive with electricity. The tales are told simply but with great emotional power. I normally think of thrillers when I think of page turners, but I read these straight through without stopping and kept hitting the “Next Page” button on my Kindle about as fast as my thumb would work.

If I had to assign a genre to the collection, I’d call it literary. My reason would be that these are realistic tales of “real” people, and they are more about the heart and the mind than about action. However, they don’t leave the reader wondering at the end. Each piece has closure.

The memoir piece recounts the author’s experience surrounding his son’s birth, when the doctor gave him those dreaded words: “Something is wrong.” I wept through half of this one.

Overall, I highly recommend it. 99 cents is definitely a bargain for the talent on display here.

Well written group of stories that tug at your emotions. The first story had me nodding my head. The second had me wanting to throttle someone. The third - a memoir piece - made me want to give the author a great big hug and then throttle some people on his behalf.
