In Nekota City, Inukai and his team of vigilantes known as "Grasshopper" protect the citizens from a rising crime wave and the greedy hands of businessmen bent on turning every block into a modern strip mall. But is this public hero actually a devil in disguise? And can high school student Ando use his mysterious power of "ventriloquism" to uncover the truth before it's too late?

Weakened from fighting and overusing his powers, Ando heads for a final confrontation with Inukai. Ando will risk everything to stop Inukai from reaching his objectives, but is it enough? And when the dust settles, the world will be changed forever.

Yep that hurt. End of the first act. If I remember rightly Inu in Japanese is dog so Junya’s dream was unfortunately very true. It sucked that he was taken down by his own side effects. Maybe if he hadn’t gone up against the bartender- who refused to go down- he would’ve been okay. As last words it would’ve been funny to hear Inukai saying them. The battle between the bartender and the hornet felt pointless.

I was surprised to see Junya so happy and then I realised it’s a front and no one is being forgiven for Ando’s death. It’s the opening of the second act and already he’s playing Russian roulette with Semi. This is where the fun starts. Always love a good revenge story.

In Summary
Maoh builds to a heart-pounding climax only to end Act One with a whimper. Fortunately, Act Two has Junya picking up where Ando left off, and the crazy transformation in Ando’s goofball brother is more than sufficient to keep readers hooked.

The Review (spoilers!)
I have a feeling a lot of readers are going to be unhappy with the end of Act One. It’s not that the story drops in intensity. All the fighting in Volume 6 finally catches up on Ando, and you can practically feel the strain in his wrecked body as he tries to get to the Grasshopper meeting in time. And it’s not for lack of action. We get a crazy battle involving Grasshopper fanatics, a riot squad, a psycho fighting chick, and the Duce bartender (who somehow gets himself to the party).

The creators do an amazing job of building and building up the tension, but when Ando and Inukai finally do have their confrontation, what follows is anticlimactic. It’s such a letdown that I would’ve thrown the manga across the room if not for the beginning of Act Two, which takes up the second half of the book.

Whereas Act One focused on Ando, Act Two centers on Junya, who’s no longer the carefree fluff-head he was before. Considering his prophetic dream about Ando, I suspected he’d eventually come into his own ability, but the power he winds up having is completely different than I anticipated. At any rate, Junya’s transformation is utterly compelling as revenge takes over his existence.

One thing that has me anticipating the next volume is whether or not Junya’s power has the debilitating side effects that Ando’s did. I always thought it unfair that the Duce bartender had a larger range, could do more damage, and had no side effects from his power (plus take a manhole cover to the head and survive) while Ando’s ventriloquism seemed to take out more than he ever got from it. For now at least, Junya seems unharmed when he taps into his power, though he does have a real bad case of crazy eyes.

Reason for Reading: Next in the series.

This is a pivotal book in the series. The first half is dark, intense and disturbing. We found out just how bad the bad guys are and the story arc that has been going since volume 1 comes to a conclusion. In the middle of the book, we are faced with "End of Act One" and immediately "Act Two" starts, wherein new characters pick up the pieces of the story arc. This is not exactly startling as the last volume gave us a preview of what to expect in this volume but plotwise we have an entirely new perspective to follow which keeps the story fresh and exciting. We also are now focusing on a new major character and it looks like a minor character up to this point will start to play a bigger role. This is one of the most exciting manga's I'm reading at the moment and once the last volume comes out this year (at vol. 10) I'll certainly be giving this one a re-read in the near future.

I'm very disappointed with the direction this series has gone in this volume. Not only was the death of Ando poorly orchestrated and anti-climactic, I had to learn of his death once the story picked up in 'Part II'. For six-and-a-half books Ando has regaled the reader with his passionate determination to stop Inukai and his bully vigilantism no matter what. It's all he's talked about. And then when the time finally arrives to face him, he dies because of injuries inflicted by his special ability?

It's just an all-around disappointing volume, and I'm not sure I want to keep reading past this point.

Wow. This is definitely the saddest volume of the series. I didn't see Ando's death coming at all. I knew there would be some sort of crazy twist leading into Act 2, but definitely not Ando dying. I gotta say, however, that I am extremely happy to see Junya becoming a main character. I kinda like him more than Ando, so pretty excited to see where things will go next.

That big battle wasn't all that... it wasn't the outcome I had a problem with, it was how things went before then. And the thing he was trying to do was kind of... well... yeah.

But I like the developments after that, as well as "act 2" so far~

Sad. I didn't see that coming, but I'm enjoying the twists and turns.
