"Filming God: A Journey from Skepticism to Faith" by Darren Wilson moved me deeply so much so, I struggle to describe what I've just read. This may, in fact, be my favorite book of those I read in 2014.
As a practicing continuationist, I've had a hard time understanding why so many Christians in the West, not only embrace cessationism but also seem to relish attacking continuationism, the gifts, Charismatics, and practically anyone who doesn't hold their view. It has left me seriously wondering had they been alive in the days of Jesus' earthly life if they would have sided with the religious leaders of His day and attributed His works to those of the devil. This book shed more light for me on why so many Christians are so very anti-miracles these days. As Mr. Wilson points out in this book from his own place of skepticism, it goes much deeper than just embracing a doctrine.
Besides that, I also enjoyed hearing more of the miraculous things God is doing these days as well as hearing about some incredibly powerful men of God. In this book, Darren shares his interactions with 4 of them and if anyone could ever truly claim to be "not religious but spiritual" these men could. Yet most of us don't know them and probably never will. They are demonstrating the kingdom of God in ways many wouldn't dare.
This book wasn't written by an overly-confident, slick Charismatic televangelist but rather by an honest believer who openly shared his struggles with believing God still does real, legitimate miracles today. Mr. Wilson was open to the place of great vulnerability and I applaud his courage to take such a risk. It inspires me to be more open as well. I'm sure his openness will help others who struggle believing God still does miracles. It will also encourage and challenge more of the church to begin to move in areas where she has been lacking to move.
This book is worth reading. I wish I could give everyone a copy.
