Should Katherine stand around waiting for death to come a calling or take a stand and do something about it? That is the question Burton asks and where our journey begins.

Well let me back up a bit. First Katherine who has been plagued by hallucinations her whole life runs out of her meds that keep the little green men at bay. Now that they are making a comeback she gets a cryptic letter from her mother informing her she is adopted. Now to make matters even worse Katherine has always known her mother never loved her. So the evil adopted mother informs her that the family is cursed and the oldest child will die sometime after they turn 24 birthday but before they turn 25 and she was adopted to fill deaths shoes. Heck even Cinderella evil step-mother wasn’t that cruel.

Now to move the story along Katherine soon learns that the little green men she has been keeping at bay are real and they have been there always, trying to protect her. But what is it exactly she needs protection from?

With her 24th only three days away Katherine needs answers and she needs them quick. With a pair of magical emerald earrings where one was gifted from her Auntie Marigold and the other one appearing at the bottom of plant next to the little green man, Katherine begins her discovery of who she is and what her future if any holds.

Burton weaves such a magical fantasy world filled with vivid description it becomes real. You soon find yourself emerged into an enchanting world where fairies and love triangles leaves you lost in the story days after you have finished. My one and only true complaint was the story ended much too soon for me.

Billed as a children’s book, it is one I am sure young adults and adults like me will enjoy on a leisurely warm day under the shade of tree seeking an escape from the everyday mundane life.

This book is very easy reading, the story flows smoothly. Steamy without being trampy. Clever twists, although somehow a little soap opera toward the end. Maybe HBO soap opera, even. Overall enjoyed it and would pick up other books by this author.

The characters were youthful but not too trendy. There were not too many pop culture references to 'date' the book too quickly, but just enough to still get a chuckle at a well placed Twilight reference. "My life is going all Twilight on me and I have no idea what I'm getting into."

There are sexual themes, situations, dreams.... positions... you get the idea. Don't pick this up expecting purity and virginity. "Time to put on my big girl pants."

"A letter came by registered mail. It was from my mother. Had she not been dead for three months, it might have seemed less odd."

"This boy could end up being a keeper." And they are. Oh, my, yummy.

I enjoyed all the lovely hot guy eye candy in this book. Oh, my. I wanted more of some of those dreams... much, much more... There were surprises, and I loved the juxtaposition of fairy sight and modern psychiatric medicine. It made the main character more realistic and believable and therefore more sympathetic.

"I looked at him like an idiotic deer about to be plowed down by a Mack truck."

"I was really tired of having to put on my big girl pants."

I think this would be great for adults that love YA but are looking for more spice than YA's have. Not to say that this is YA, but the pacing and characters just have that almost innocent (not pure or virginal innocent) feel. I will most definitely read more from this author.

Katherine receives a letter from her dead mother 3 day prior to her 24th Birthday. In the letter is a key to a safe deposit box and the information granting her access to the box. All the letter states is that she should open the box before she turns 24. Her brother Geoff and her go and retrieve the box. Inside is a manilla envelope and a leather-bound collection of old documents. She opens the envelope and starts to read what is going to totally change her life.

She finds out she was adopted at infancy to spare her brother from a family curse. Every first born child in her family tree going back around 5 generations had died sometime after their 24th birthday and never made it to 25. Her "mother" tells her to not give birth to any children since she will unlikely see it to term prior to dying and that if she is the last in the line that the curse will be broken with her. And that this may be a good time to get any legal affairs taken care of.

She goes home and falls asleep, forgetting that she had a date with her roommates brother to go out for a beer and play some pool. She makes another date for the next day to have dinner with him and she tells him what is going on and he believes her. And from here, the journey to stop the curse before her life is taken, begins.

The book was pretty good from the begining, but it didn't hit 4 star rating until closer to the end when all of the plot twists started happening. From that point on I couldn't put it down until I figured out exactly what the hell was going on. I would recommend this book to any of my PNR reading friends.

Little green men, shocking revelations, a curse, the fae, a changeling, a nymph, a trip to England, betrayal, the return of a long lost love and a new romance come together in this appealing and entertaining paranormal/fantasy mystery romance from Burton. I was pulled into the story from the first few lines and read it in one sitting.

The story is told first person from the point of view of Katherine, humorous tomboy extraordinaire, who frequently thinks, "pretty sure I reek of man-repellent." She's off her meds seeing what she's been told are hallucinations. She'd seen little people when she was little child, going through many doctors until one found the right meds to make them go away for seven years. Now they're back.

Chris, Katherine's roommate's brother, has been a friend for the past year. Is it a coincidence that he calls her up to ask her out for coffee the day a letter from her mother, who died 3 mos ago, arrives with a key in it to a safe deposit box stating to open it before her 24th birthday - in just 3 days? When Chris suddenly starts putting out "vibes" that he thinks of her as something more than just a friend, in shock from what she found in the box, she decides to explore those vibes.

Katherine finds out that Chris is a great lay and he can cook too! While there is not a lot of sex in the story, what is there is steamy. Burton writes a seriously good and hot carnal scene. Whew!

Chris and Jonathan have to try to keep Katherine alive past her 24th birthday while both vying for her affection.

With a nice couple of twists, this is a quick read that engages the reader. I think fans of the paranormal romance and fantasy romance genres will be glad to be introduced to Burton and his story.

Warning Spoiler Alert!!!!
This has a HEA ending for Chris and Katherine - sort of. In the manner of a two people walking off into the sunset together, it is implied but not specifically stated.

Broken by David H. Burton is the interesting tale of the choices a young woman must make after learning that her past isn’t what it appeared to be. Katherine always knew growing up that her mother didn’t love her. She had come to terms with that fact until the day she received a letter from her mother – after her mother’s passing. In the letter Katherine learns that she may not have very much time left to live, as the eldest child in each generation dies after they turn twenty-four.

Jonathan holds two special places in Katherine’s heart. Not only does he hold the spot of her first true love, but also the spot for the first to break her heart. Leaving without any explanation has tormented Katherine for years and nobody has ever came close in comparison – until Chris.

Katherine has always been secretly drawn to her roommate’s brother Chris. The only trouble with her crush is that Katherine has always been just one the guys. After her mother’s letter arrives, things change and Katherine is left with a since of hope…only to find it ripped from her.

David H. Burton has created a unique story and one that I enjoyed reading. The reader is pulled in wondering what Katherine will do with her new found information. Although the ending felt a little rushed, it wasn’t so bad as to hinder the story for me. However, I did have a hard time believing the emotions at times. The majority of the story was written in a way that drew me in and had me feeling for the characters involved. A few parts weren’t written in as much detail and though I should have felt for the characters, I was left feeling as though it wasn’t believable.

If you are looking for a quick paranormal romance with a steamy scene or two, you should give Broken by David H. Burton a read.

I was given the book by the author for an honest review, but I had already had this book on my wishlist the minute I saw it on smashwords. XD
It is paranormal romance with Fae, what's not to like?

I have to admit that the book was darker than I had anticipated, dealing with gloomy issues and to say that the main protagonist faced lots of hardships is a major understatement.

Katherine is only a few days before her 24th birthday and she is surprised to receive a letter from a mother that never really expressed any love towards her.
In it she is informed that she was adopted, not because she was wanted, but because she was needed, so that the actual child of the family, her younger brother, wouldn't die from the horrible curse of her dad's family that caused all first-born children to die sometime after their 24th birthday.
Devastated by the apocalypse of the reason for her loveless and lonely life, she seeks consolation from her brother, but he is unable and unwilling to give it. Who stands by her side though is her roommate's brother, Chris, who had always been good to her even though on the margins of her life so far.
He comes to the foreground though and Katherine, not only finds a friend in him, but also a lover.

Along with the letter, Katherine receives a key and it is through all that, that she finally manages to make sense of her life so far.
All her life she had been seeing fairies and a little green man on plants, having nightmares and -as they call it-" the fae sight", things that no one else could see and which earned her extensive medication and institutionalization for a big part of her life.

As she realizes that this ability is what might just help save her life, Katherine, trusting in Chris, embarks on a journey to her aunt (who wasn't exactly that) so that she can find out how to break the curse, more so because the gift of two emerald earrings, make her travel back in time whenever she wears them, but what awaits her there, is not only her past, but also her future in the form of the golden-haired woman who seems to be persecuting her, intent on killing her, just like she has killed all her first-born ancestors, including her father.

Things become even more complicated when her first love, the one who disappeared without goodbye, breaking her heart forever, Johnathan, appears, revealing his true identity and purpose to her journey.

Telling more would ruin the magic of the book, and trust me the plot is intricate, complex, but perfectly understandable to follow, without any "holes", despite traveling back in time, the implication of supernatural creatures (some of which I hadn't read about in a novel before, like Nymphs), enchanted walls that keep the evil out and you prisoner inside, a curse born of betrayed trust and love and everything you can imagine.

Considering the abilities of each of the men in the story, Chris and Johnathan (about which I would be eager to read more about, it didn't come as a surprise that Katherine found it really hard to control herself and her feelings.
I thought it was nice that the author had the protagonist not just be confused but also act confused in several parts of the book, i.e. repeating sentences and thoughts, unable to finish or focus on a thought, hesitant to make a decision and stick with it. In any other novel this would have probably irked me, but it made sense in Katherine's case - even if it could be considered stretched at some points), and it made me sympathize with her character even more.

By the end of the book I really loved the little green man *g* and wanted to put him in my pocket and carry him around, too and also her father, her ancestors and particularly her aunt, were all lovable characters.
I even sympathized with the golden-haired woman, because we got to see what made her place the curse and how her love got twisted from hate and pain. It was hard to forgive her, but it was impossible not to make a few excuses for her.

On the whole, it was a very interesting and exciting book and I have to admit that the end got to me.
Even though Chris was adorable, I was actually kinda rooting for Johnathan and I was pretty shocked and disappointed by what happened with him and what he did.... (not spoiling you...)

Anyways... I think anyone would enjoy this book so...
Where's more? :)

David H. Burton’s talent for weaving an intriguing, engrossing and magnificent tale explodes in Broken.

When I had first read about this novel, I was instantly intrigued. I love a great paranormal story and even though Broken is sub-titled as a paranormal romance, there is not an excessive amount of romance. So those who may be looking for gushy love, no need to apply here. However, there is a bit of a love triangle twisted throughout the story, as well as some steamy scenes which leave the pages sizzling.

The main character, Katherine Gregory, has always felt as though she was different. Beginning as a young child, she had strange visions; complete with that a little green guy trying to communicate with her. Her mother was never the loving, caring type (though doting endlessly on her brother) and she just never felt as though she completely “fit”. After a doctor prescribed her medication, the hallucinations fled and life was a bit more normal, or at least as much as it could be for Katherine.

It is when she runs out of her prescription and shortly after her mother dies that the visions once again begin. Add to this a cryptic note left within a lockbox at the bank and Katherine is about to make an unnerving and horribly frightful discovery.

A pawn in an unthinkable scheme by her mother, Katherine learns that her life will end anytime within the year, from the day that she turns 24. Her birthday is only 3 short days away and time is quickly running out.

With the help of a long-time friend/recently turned lover, Katherine embarks on a journey to uncover truths, save her life and break a long standing faery curse that has blanketed her family in a shroud of darkness and death for generations.

In Broken, I truly felt myself sinking into the story; the descriptions and characters are incredibly vivid and captivating. David H. Burton presents his readers with a world of faeries, paranormal, darkness and intrigue. He uses his words seamlessly to paint images and scenes upon the reader’s minds which leave a lasting impression, even after the last word is read. The love triangle between Katherine, her current lover and a long-lost first love brings sizzle and heat to the novel as well. The fight against time and meeting the maker of her death adds excellent intrigue and suspense. I truly loved the characters within this tale and felt that the character development was wonderfully done.

Full of twists and turns, highs and lows and plenty of surprises, Broken is a story that will appeal to many readers, male and female alike. Anyone looking for an entertaining and multi-dimensional read will do well to pick up a copy of Broken by David H. Burton.

Favorite Quote: James continued dancing around the room, kissing my nine-month-old head and cheeks.

I remembered that of my mother, she never touched me unless she needed to. She had never fawned over me like she had Geoffrey.

Tears slid down my cheeks as I realized someone had loved me after all. I didn’t think a ghost could cry. I wiped my tears.

Whoa! Awesome reader’s hook! I knew from the blurb I was going to like this book, and the opening lines just cemented that intent. That reader’s hook is just the beginning, though, and very shortly the initial intrigue is followed by some even more intense shockers. Soon, the mysteries deepen and pile atop each other, and just as one clue is extended, more tentacles of concealment shift in the shadows. I liked the author’s approach in this, of entangling several different skeins of possibility and probability, both as reasons for Katherine’s background, and as issues with which she absolutely MUST deal for the future-if she is to have a future at all, that is!

Fast-paced and intriguing, intricately plotted, with good characterisations-and a subtle, delicate hand at interweaving the paranormal, supernatural, and just plain mystifying, “Broken” is a joy to read and most readers will probably want to race through it in one sitting-or if not, will spend the intervening time away pondering its intrigues!

Broken is the first short story I read in a while. I was looking for something I can get into, but for it not to be very time consuming. I'm so glad I chose this one.

First, I want to say that I love the cover. Not many short stories have great covers, but I think this one is excellent. I look forward to seeing Bitten's cover.

The characters were fun and interesting, the story line was exciting and the ending was filled with twists, just how I like it. Yes, sometimes things were a bit vague, including the ending, but it was enjoyable. I wish it could have been longer so things could have been spaced out a bit more, but it's a short story and that's just how it goes. Personally, I think he could have made it a full story. It definitely had the potential. I'm not sure what to expect from Bitten, but I hope to get more of a back story when it comes to the characters, especially Jonathan and Morgana. I didn't see that ending coming, which was great.

Over all, this was a quick, fun, original read. I recommend that paranormal romance lovers check it out!

A good, fun, quick read about fairies mixing with our world. There was a lot of mystery, romance & even some time travel packed into the story. David seems to have a slightly bent view of reality that I like a lot.

In November 2010, I had the opportunity to review Scourge, a self-published work by David H. Burton. This was the book that really sparked my love affair with self/indie published books. I had read (and enjoyed) a few self or indie published before Scourge, but something about David's writing really grabbed my attention. Then, a few months ago, I read David's The Second Coming and Simian's Lair, and I realized that David was quickly moving into my top list of favorite author's. So, of course, when I discovered that another David H. Burton work was coming out this year, my excitement knew no bounds.

Though I was excited to read another of David's works, I admit to being skeptical. Broken is a paranormal romance. I had no doubt in my mind that David would nail the paranormal part, but the romance? I had serious doubts. Most writers tend to stick with a particular type of writing, and of the works I had read of David's, I just didn't see how he could manage to pull off a romance novel. Important Lesson #1 from Broken: Never doubt a master writer.

Now, I've given my perspective on the author, let me share a little about the book. Katherine does not have the best of luck. Just before her 24th birthday, she receives a letter from her dead mother telling her that she is the heir to a strange curse in which the first born child in each generation dies in his/her twenty-fifth year. Isn't that a fine "Happy Birthday" from the grave? She has a choice: she can ignore the letter or she can try to unravel the mystery behind this long-standing curse on her family. Important Lesson # 2 from Broken: Beware of letters from dead people.

But the fun doesn't end there. Katherine becomes caught between two love interests. One new and one from her past. Both with secrets that she must uncover, and she must decide which one is truly the right one for her. Can she trust either of them? Or will one or both betray her? Important Lesson #3 from Broken: Juggling two love interests and trying to end a curse is hard work.

This book had me on the edge of my seat as I was reading. I was amazed once again by the sheer brilliance of David H Burton's writing. Broken is an amazing story, not to mention it gets steamy here and there (which is always fun to read). The plot twists left me breathless and had me racing to discover what would happen next. Important Lesson #4 from Broken: You NEED to read Broken. It's an AWESOME book!

I also want to mention that I absolutely love the cover of this book. It is so... enchanting. I just love it when a book cover actually enhances the story. And this cover certainly does. Important Lesson #5 from Broken: An awesome cover can make an awesome novel even more awesome!

And as a side note- this was one of those reviews I had a hard time writing. I don't feel that I can adequately put into words how much I thoroughly enjoyed this book. In this case, words simply fail me. So, I will do what I have done only one other time...give it a 10 out of 5.

(I was given this book for free on a read-to-review basis.)
“A letter came by registered mail. It was from my mother. Had she not been dead for three months, it might have seemed less odd.”
23-year-old Katherine can’t understand why her extremely efficient mother would arrange for something to be delivered three months after her death; that is until she reads the letter her mother left for her.

Firstly she learns that she is adopted, and secondly she finds that a family curse means that she will die soon after her 24th birthday, which is a matter of 2 days away.

Shocked and saddened, she begins to go through some papers that her mother had enclosed with the letter, and finds something that truly surprises her. The little green men that she has seen in the past and attributed to a mental health condition have in the past also plagued her adoptive grandfather too.

Realising that something odd is going on, Katherine turns to the only member of her adoptive father’s family that she remembers – Aunt Marigold, and jumps on a plane to England to talk to her.

Once there she realises that there is a lot more going on than she realised. The curse was placed on her family by an angry faerie, and this faerie is out for blood, already stalking Katherine and her boyfriend and trying to kill them. Katherine must figure out a way to outsmart the faerie and fast, if she wants to break the curse and live past her 24th birthday.

I enjoyed this book, and I absolutely loved the opening line (At the top)!

I really felt for Katherine. First she learned that she was adopted, and then she found that her mother had purposely adopted her so that curse of the first born would fall on Katherine rather than her biological son Gregory. Poor Katherine really had nobody else to turn to in the world, and if she hadn’t have started a relationship with the lovely Chris, she really would have been all alone.

I liked the interaction between Chris and Katherine, he seemed to really care about her, although I would describe this more as a fantasy book with an erotic scene, rather than as a paranormal romance. The addition of the ex-boyfriend added a love triangle to the story as well.

I did get a little confused at one point and I'm still confused now to be honest. Thankfully this didn't spoil the story though.

This book wasn’t very long, but was well written and the characters well developed. The story didn’t feel too short, and was an enjoyable read.
7 out of 10.

For years Katherine has been seeing things, things her mother ends up taking her to numerous doctors for. The doctors conclude it’s a mental issue, shes hallucinating when she sees these things and medicates her to the gills. Katherine ends up living with a roomate, one she never sees but she sees a lot of her roomies brother Chris. Chris brings Katherine a plant, and the hallucinations start up again. She is pretty sure it is medication withdrawl and not the death of her mother, three months earlier, causing this.

Katherine receives a letter in the mail from her mother, again three months after her death. The letter has a key to a safe deposit box and in it a letter that says her family is cursed. On her fathers side, no one makes it past their 25th birthday…the letter arrives days before Katherine’s birthday. With the help of Chris, Katherine embarks on a journey to find out why and stop it before it’s too late.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Broken. I’d be remiss not to mention that Broken is a self published novel, but rest assured not only is it beautifully written and engaging, it’s wonderfully edited. The world building was fabulous and the characters were engaging right down to the big bad. I fell in love with Chris & Brokk, the little hallucination person.

There’s also a little bit of a love triangle going on, Jonathan was Katherine’s first love and she still isn’t over the way he left the relationship. And she has just started a new relationship with Chris, but ends up finding out some things that make her question the wisdom of even staying in this new relationship.

My only issue was the lack of closure with Katherine’s roomate, after finding out about Chris we never hear anything about the roomate. Was she really his sister? I am also wondering if this book is the start of a series, because I felt we need more about Jonathan after the events. It just felt like there was something unfinished, and I want more!

Broken is a wonderfully written fairy tale meets modern world.

I know I say this a lot, but once I read and like an author’s book, when I read the next one, I kind of hold the author up to a certain standard. In this case, David H. Burton had quite a challenge ahead of him because his novel, Second Coming, was one of the best books I read last year. Even though Broken is quite a different type of story, I was not disappointed in the least!

The depth of character Mr. Burton creates is just one of the wonderful things about his writing. His heroes and heroines are fully fleshed out, as well as many of his supporting characters. In this story, Katherine is just that, broken, but never defeated. Just days before her 25th birthday, she is immersed into a new world of faeries, one hidden for a long time from her. Yet, she meets the challenges of learning and surviving this world head-on. With romantic entanglements and all, I promise you that you will keep turning the pages.

Another thing David is just brilliant at is creating a world of his very one. Clear and fantastic descriptions only heighten the well-devised rules of his fictional universe, full of a rich history, a unique setting, and strong creatures. While his story captures you, it also is easy to follow while leaving the reader with enough questions to keep reading. Without giving anything away, just let me say Mr. Burton will surprise you time and again. The phrase, I didn’t see that coming, entered my mind a couple of times. So, obviously, plot, another strength!

Really, David H. Burton is truly gifted, an extraordinary author I am grateful to have found.

Broken: A Paranormal Romance, by David H. Burton

After thoroughly enjoying "The Second Coming" and the child in me falling in love with Grim Doyle in "Scourge" I was ready to kiss good-bye being a virgin to the genre of Paranormal Romance to embark on a journey with some of David H. Burton's most interesting characters yet.

If you haven't yet read a paranormal romance novel, brush aside any visions of Fabio coming out of retirement, laden with Botox, trying to seduce an alien woman with heaving breasts into some happily ever after - not in this paranormal romance anyway.

Without giving too much away, "Broken" had me hooked by the third sentence. I read through each of the concise chapters of this fast-paced narrative in one sitting!

David H. Burton made me care about Katherine Gregory, who three days before her twenty-fourth birthday, receives a letter from her cold hearted, deceased mother which informs her that as the eldest child of the Gregory family, she's cursed and will not see the age of twenty-five.

Between learning of the curse and the fact that she's off her meds - seeing a little green man in her roommate's ficus tree, things might look bleak for Katherine but she's not going down without a fight!

I read "Broken" eleven days ago and still find myself thinking about it. I haven't passed a ficus tree or anything else lush and green without taking a second, hopeful, glance. I don't think I will for a long time to come.

3 days before her 24th birthday, Katherine receives a letter from her mother telling her of a family curse in which the first born Gregory child is destined to die within their 25th year. With a key to a locked box and new knowledge her mother has secured for her, Katherine must find a way to stop this curse from happening... or else she will be doomed to die like her ancestors. This family secret takes her to the UK where she must not only find a way to end this curse, but also decide between her new love and her former beau, whom was love lost and never forgotten.

I found this book to be absolutely enchanting. I picked it up and didn't want to put it down, reading for nearly 8 hours straight. I enjoyed the mix between fantasy and reality, where I cared for not only Katherine but her friends along the journey as well. David H. Burton tells a tale that brings adults back into the fantasy world we so often forget when we grow up, and keeps you guessing to the very end. Why is their family cursed and will Katherine be able to put an end to it ... or will she just be another victim? That is for you to purchase this book and find out! I highly recommend you do!

I was excited to read this book and I was not let down. I do hope there is another book to come! With so much that came to light at the end of this book makes me want to know what happens after EVERYONE sits back and realized just what happened! LOL

Never mind being told you were crazy your whole life because you "saw things" then finding out what you were seeing might actually be true! Being told you could die any day because of some curse that has been passed down every generation. While trying to find out if it was all true you realize everything you ever thought about your whole life was a lie and you were a pawn in just about everyone's game. But then when you find out why the curse started and how you are the one who could end it was because of the very person you are!

There is a lot that goes on in this books with lots of twist and turns it will keep you wanting to find out what happens next. So many questions and finding the out the answers will not be at all what you expected!

I was very cautious going in to this book ..... paranormal romance has some great names in it. But I was very surprised that it was one of the best books I have read this year. The fey in the book are very true to all the stories I have heard about them. I loved the flow if the book. I find it hard to keep my interest in most books but this one did it without me realizing it was going on. And for that alone I highly recommend this book.
There are a lot of books in this genre that leave you feeling like there was no conclusion --- unaswered questions if you will ---- I think that is why so many are long series. It was really nice to read something that could be a stand alone book. I am hoping to see these characters again but even if I don't at least I know how it ended. And that made me love it. Everyone needs to read this ---- just the twists in it were awesome ---- I didn't see most of them coming. I never wanted to stop reading this and I was left wanting much more.

Thanks to R2R for giving me the chance to read this. I got sucked in very quickly and read it in one day. Burton did a good job with the mix of fantasy and reality. After all, as the saying goes, perception is reality, and that is very apparent here. The twists and layers of deception were handled well and made the reader eager to find out more.
Katherine grew up thinking she was crazy and that the things she saw were hallucinations so her mother had her medicated. Imagine her surprise and confusion when she receives a letter indicating that she is not delusional and that her mother knew the truth all along. Add to that betrayal a curse, mythical creatures, little green men, an essential roadtrip with new new love that leads them into the return of her long lost first love and you have a very enjoyable paranormal romance/mystery .

When I purchased my Kobo in 2012, they offered me one free ebook per month for a year in exchange for joining their mailing list. Broken is one of the titles I received, and the only one I hadn’t yet read, mainly because I’m really not into the paranormal.

It wasn’t excellent, and there was no doubt it was self-published, but it was an okay read. I would consider it a YA love story with a twist – but it didn’t seem to have anything to do with the paranormal, as I understand it. It’s not about ghosts or the supernatural; it’s about faeries. In my mind, this classes it as a fantasy, not paranormal, but maybe I’m splitting hairs.

The point is I read it, and I didn’t hate it.

Katherine has been seeing little green men most of her life. Her only reprieve has come with medication to prevent the hallucinations. Shortly before her 24th birthday, Katherine finds out they may not have been hallucinations after all.

Overall, I found Broken to be quite enjoyable and a quick, light read. There were a few times, certain aspects of a scene seemed a little disjointed, but it wasn't enough to detract from the overall enjoyment of the read. The premise was unique and not one I had read before; thus, I found the story refreshing.

Thanks to David H. Burton and Read-to-Review (a subgroup of Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy Fanatics hosted by goodreads) for the opportunity to read Broken for free in exchange for an honest review.

David Burton has once again amazed me with a truly enjoyable reading experience. I read this book in one day, I just couldn't put it down! I was drawn into it on the very first page, and the draw never waned. The characters are well developed, entertaining and believable; I particularly enjoyed getting to know Katherine as she journeyed into a world where she was "cursed" to die in her 24th year, and her birthday was just 3 days away. As she struggled to sort things out we were taken on a journey that was unforgettable. I also enjoyed Brokk, a fun and simple character that made the faery world connect to the "real" world. I will never look at my houseplants quite the same way again.

I am not new to David H. Burton’s tales, having read “Scourge” and “Simian’s Lair” to my children and the online chapters of “Billy Bones”. So I was not surprised by the easy flow of David’s prose in “Broken”.

The well-paced story is engaging from the start as the reader follows Katherine through her struggle to make heads or tails of the mysterious curse that has been dropped in her lap. And Katherine does not disappoint. She is written very well with a wittiness and spunkiness that you can’t help but connect with.

Broken is an entertaining read that keeps you guessing to the riveting conclusion.

I would like to thank R2R and the author for the opportunity for the read :) I really liked this one. It reads very quick, though not short, and I really like how the author puts the few little twists and then gives you one big blow out twist at the end! I like this new world, though slightly similar, Fae concept. The characters are well written, with the leading lady giving you a heartbreak just from hear her story and the two leading males with their hotness and mystery! I do love that this love triangle had an ending. She made a choice! I like her choice LOL I hope this story continues one day!

This was a nice book, quick read. The main character was easy to relate too. The story was somewhat original and it was fun. I really don't have much to say about it. I liked it, and it was well written. It didn't rock my world or anything but I've definitely read worse!

It does have some nice twists and turns and I really didn't see the final twist until late in the book and I always see them coming.

I'd recommend this to older YA readers (there is one graphic sex scene and continued mention of sex), or lovers of light paranormal romance.

The bad people get punished and the good people live happily ever after.

I spent a lot of time with my face screwed up in confusion...this book didn't make a lot of sense. But it did have one he'll of a sexy foot massage scene!

Loved it! Now I just need more! I won an e-copy of this book through a contest on Wickedlilpixie's website so I want to thank the hell out of the wicked one herself. I love finding new PR authors to enjoy.

I picked this up from the library on a whim. This short book is in serious need of an editor, who might have helped shape it into a more cohesive whole. As it is, the story is ok, I suppose, but the writing is so fractured as to make it difficult to read.
