Full-color photos. "An eye large, clear photographic layouts of weapons share pages with explanatory text and definitive illustrations. Each double spread covers a subject, from primitive weapons to the 'Guns That Won the West'; it's easy to forget their function in the beauty of the pieces and their clever designs. The weapons from the Middle Ages are breathtaking simply as art. A plum pudding of a book."-- Kirkus.
This book is amazing for those who want to get introduced to the topic of historical and modern weapon - the illustrations are captivating and the explanations are clear and written in a coherent language. As someone who is not particularily drawn by weapon, even I spent quite some time exploring the book. The format is perfect for a child book, convenient to hold and read. The qualit of paper is good, letter size is good. Overall it's a very good purchase, worth the money.

this book only mentions european, indian and japanese weapons. author must have forgot the most important smiths of the world. it's turks. now i'm gonna count what turkish have accomplished in the history of smithery. 1. they brought the cavalry sword to both europe and middle east.(sabre-scimitar) 2. they were expert horse archers since 209 bc. 3. they were one of the first gunsmiths
if you have kids, teach kids, or have any influence in the local library this DK Eyewitness series is a must. it is easy to use, broken into kid size bites, and has very cool pictures. a perfect home reference collection for any household with children!
This children's book is filled with fantastic images and facts on various types of weapons and armor. The author takes a chronological perspective starting with prehistoric times and through to the present day. It was really interesting to see the different types of weapons from guns and bows/arrows to swords and knives. I also thought its was a nice touch that she added groups of people and their arms/armor such as focusing on the Japanese etc. I'd say this is a good book for anyone interested in a basic knowledge of weapons and then you can look up what you fancy on your own.
Discover the story of weapons and armor- from Stone Age axes to the battle gear of the samurai. Be and eyewitness to awesome and bloody weapons such as swords, knuckledusters, and pistols- and the equipment used to deflect deadly slashes, blows, and bullets. See a ceremonial knife from Sudan, find out how far a crossbow could fire an arrow, and discover why powder flasks were made of cow horn. All these things you learn, but nothing about the modern age.
As a child, I loved taking Eyewitness books home from the library and looking at all of the neat things. I specifically remember looking at the one about Pirates over and over again, but I don’t doubt I didn’t look at this one either. Boys would love looking at this book along with any adventurous girls out there. I might use this with fifth to eighth graders who would want to do a project on arms. This book also came with a CD that has clipart with pictures from the book for projects.
Swords, arrows and darts, oh, my! I am not a huge fan of mayhem, but this book gives a very visual and detailed explanation of the hows and whys of human armaments, as well as protections that have been devised against such. History of war buffs, line up!
DK Eyewitness Books: Arms and Armor (Hardcover) by Michele Byam The book helps children whom are looking into arms and armor through out the world. there is comparison of different arms and armor from different areas and eras.
I know these are made for younger readers but I enjoy them very much. Great pictures and layout make them a joy to read. I always learn something new from them. This volume had a reference to a lost chapter in the Bible, in the book of Daniel called "Susanna and the Elders". Highly recommended
