New York Times bestselling author Janet Chapman takes us to charming Spellbound Falls, where strange things have started happening ever since Maximilian Oceanus came to town…

Maximilian Oceanus arrives in Spellbound Falls just in time to save Olivia Baldwin from an overly aggressive suitor, only to find himself attracted to the beautiful, if rather aloof, widow. And although Mac has come to Inglenook to get a handle on fatherhood, his newly discovered six-year-old son has set his sights on finding his father a wife.

Olivia, however, is busy getting Inglenook ready for its new season, so she doesn’t have time to deal with her growing attraction to the dangerously seductive Mac. Besides, weird stuff seems to happen all around him. Take the fact that her seatbelt keeps getting stuck in his presence, or locks magically open for him without keys, and that he seems to have a talent for sensing things. Never mind the three lost albatrosses walking down the road in the middle of the night. Since when are there albatrosses in Maine?

But despite Olivia’s resistance to falling under the sexy man’s spell, Olivia is having trouble fighting her longing. Because she knows Mac is just the man to unlock the powerful passion deep within her….

Hey guys its Jessica. Sorry I’ve been MIA for so long. I apologize for the long overdue wait for Janet’s next book. You’ve all been very patient and loyal fans that she loves. She has been working on this book over the last year and a half while dealing with her battle with cancer. It saddens me to say that she peacefully lost this battle this past weekend while her family was by her side. I apologize if this feels sudden, she was a very private person even to her family. And she truly thought of all of you as her family. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Janet Chapman is the author of twenty-two contemporary and magical romance novels, all of which are set in her beautiful state of Maine. She lives in a cozy log home on a beautiful lake with her husband, surrounded by an eclectic assortment of wildlife that she finds both entertaining and inspiring. Probably best known for her Highlander Series (a saga of twelfth century warriors rebuilding their clans in modern-day Maine that now spans three generations), Janet also has two spin-off magical series (Midnight Bay & Spellbound Falls) and several contemporary family series set on the coast and in the mountains. With over three million books printed in six languages, her stories regularly appear on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller’s lists.

When she’s not writing (well, when she should to be writing but isn’t), Janet and her husband are traveling the state in their camper throughout all four seasons; hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and generally rubbing elbows with Mother Nature while always keeping an eye out for colorful new characters—human and beast—to put in her stories.

Janet Chapman Janet Chapman Passed awayThis is one of my very favorite author's -as a matter of fact I just finished a re-re-re-read of almost all her book, last week. I had a suspicion that something like this was going to happen, when her next books publication date kept changing and Amazon made it "not available" instead of pre-order. I will miss this author's wonderful way with words, magic and love -nobody can ever take her place.

" Janet Chapman, Author

It is with my deepest sorrow that I am to inform you of the death of our beloved : Janet Chapman passed away on Saturday October 28, 2017 with a long battle of cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones. Janet was a truly marvelous women, I will greatly miss her. Please pray for her husband and family. ~Vanetta “keep sprinkling the magic” "

I always hope that I stay alive long enough for my favorite author's to finish their series -but I have never once thought about the fact that *they* can die before they have finished. This loss brings that fact home to me

Spellbound Falls by Janet Chapman

While many people may consider this novel to be a part of the Midnight Bay series, it really isn't and can easily be read as a stand-alone book.

Ms. Chapman takes her usual plot-line of a woman looking for a flaming affair which then turns into love, to the farthest degree with this book. This is by far the best book she has written to date. And I have read all of them. Many, many times over! This book had so many surprise twists that I periodically had to put it down to mull it over some.

Maximilian Oceanus, better known as Mac, needs a wife. Preferably, NOT one picked out by his father. And one day while he is taking his newly found son Henry to Inglenook for parenting classes, he comes upon Olivia in the process of being manhandled and nearly raped. He can sense that Olivia is going to be good for him; he just doesn't figure that he will fall in love with her. After all he would just be happy to get married to someone he could like than risk his father’s forced marriage. This sounds like the plot for a historical novel doesn't it?

Olivia has been hurt nearly all her life by people, but she is stronger than she knows and she is going to have to be, because when she agrees to have a fling with Mac, she soon finds a passion that she never knew was within her. And soon that passion turns to all out love. Not only is loving Mac going to rock her world but a few truths are going to be revealed that would shock anyone living through it.

Readers of Ms Chapman's books knew from the Midnight Bay Series - Mystical Warrior (Midnight Bay)Dragon Warrior (Midnight Bay Trilogy)who Oceanus was already, and what he was capable of. I just never expected to see his full range of powers used in such a manner, but I should have expected it.

In addition, if you haven't read the three books in that series might I suggest you do so? I promise you won't regret it.
Oceanus seemed to be a little colder than Ms Chapman's usual hero’s, but like I said knowing who and what he is I can see why he may have not have been the most romantic creature/man ever to have lived!

Fall in love with Olivia and Oceanus as he moves heaven, earth, and the oceans to prove his love to her.

This was such a fun, quick read and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the magical turn it took. I definitely wasn’t expecting that going into this book and it made for a pleasant surprise. I was very pleased that once the magical aspect was introduced, it didn’t totally overpower the other elements of the story and it wasn’t cheesy or overdone.

I also very much enjoyed the cast of characters, they were each unique and brought something different to the story. I thought the ties between them was quite interesting as well, a couple reveals definitely had my jaw dropping!

Very turned off by the complete lack of... um, well, how to put it... coherence to this story. Yeah. That's the word I'm looking for.

I think it's supposed to be some kind of paranormal world. Maybe?
I think it's supposed to have a plucky heroine (single honorably widowed mom struggling to make a go of it with the in-laws business) I'm supposed to pull for. Kinda?
I think it's supposed to be a small-town place where weird things happen. Sort of?
I think I'm supposed to be intrigued by the hero and his attempt to connect with an "oops you have a son" child of 8 years or so. Okay?

Really, I couldn't get past first, the incoherence of the narrative structure, and second (and more importantly to me), the casually tossed out attempted rape of our Heroine by a minor character in the first few chapters that, of course, our Hero foils as their first meeting to even try to figure it out.

Nope. Not going to slog through more to see if the story "gets better". In my experience, they never do. That trope is dead and should be gone gone gone. I have zero patience for it any more.

I liked it. Really. I did. That being said, I had a very hard time getting into this one and I couldn't understand why. A Romance novel with a fantasy element (he's a wizard who happens to also be a Prince of Atlantis)which is right up my alley! And then it finally hit me. Janet Chapman is not a very descriptive author. She doesn't go into great detail when describing the setting, what the characters look like, or their emotions for that matter all of which made it hard for me to get emotionally invested in the story.

Still. It was a pretty good read. Not her best, but still...

This is not a bad story despite my 2 stars.
It has many interesting elements but I just didn't think they were mixed well together. For all these things to work out in a contemporary setting, the execution wasn't always believable.
The explanations for things weren't as detailed as they should and some character behavior wasn't exactly quirky, more weird.
How did everything mesh and why should I believe it when it didn't always made sense...so, in the end, some decisions felt rushed and unlikely and that felt overall undone for me.

awesome... what a great story. This looks like the beginning of another great series by Janet. I was so glad to hear about a few other characters and get to meet a whole new set of people to fall in love with. Can't wait for more. But i hope Mac's magic comes back ASAP so he can keep moving mountains for his loved ones.

Reader's advisory: Lots of references and allusions to previous events that happened in her other series. May want to read that series first. (I didn't know that going in, but am discovering that now upon reading this.)

This author was new to me and I tried this in response to an online recommendation. It was different. I don't think the plot was fully developed and there were a few places were it really needed work. Particularly in the initial world-building and setting, and the hand-waving at past events mentioned in previous books from another series (which I'd of course not read, nor realized that I needed to first). But it was a pleasant enough read. Pessimistic me thinks conflict resolution by

The fantastical element is (maybe unintentionally) very sweet and not particularly dangerous. There are no silly magical battles (a nice surprise...hate those silly things), and the family and parenting aspects were very nice and well done. The kids were cute and the parents loving and well meaning. They acted and (Henry in particular) spoke inappropriately to their age-level, but it's easily disregarded--not a huge problem for me.

I'll probably try another by this author and see if I want to read more.

Author: Janet Chapman
First published: 2012
Length: 325 pages, ~5600 kindle locations
Setting: Contemporary. Maine.
Sex: Infrequent. Reasonably explicit.
Hero: Single father.
Heroine: Runs summer camp. Single mother.
Includes: Letter from author on the power of hugs. Excerpt from Charmed by His LoveCharmed by Janet Chapman.
Paranormal:

Things you need to know:
~ First book in a new series that heavily references previous series (that I have not read).
~ Relationship driven romance.
~ Paranormal/fantasy elements that play a strong part in the book.
~ Attempted rape of h by minor character at the beginning of book.
~ Single mother (widow) with 8yo daughter, single father with precious 6yo son.

Overall, it’s an okay book. I probably wouldn’t have picked it up if a) I’d realised the emphasis on previous knowledge, and b) I’d known of the paranormal elements. They were somewhat twee and more important than my expectation: I expected stand under the waterfall mist and find your true love and I got re-arrange your view of the world because he isn’t quite normal. But I didn’t know.

I would have enjoyed it more if I’d been invested in the series. If I’d understood the assumed backgrounds.

But in the end it felt like a hot mess. So much stuff chucked in with an odd relationship progression. Olivia was a mess with everyone out to get her for no particular reason. Mac having a spottily explained background. And an oddly precocious Henry who really didn't sound 6.

2.5 stars rounded down. While it has possibilities, that's no excuse.

Not a bad read for a romance novel. Normally I find these hokey but the magical element made the story a lot more interesting. Olivia runs a family camp for parents and children and Mac and his son Henry are the first to arrive. While helping her get the rest of the camp prepared for the season-opening, their mutual attraction grows. She soon begins to discover mysteries about him and his son, as well as learning truths about her own family. Interesting twists, turns, and discoveries make this read worthwhile.

This is labeled and considered the first book in the Spellbound Falls series but it does have characters that were seen in Chapman's Highlander series. I would suggest reading those first before you start this one or it might be a little confusing.

I ended up really liking this book. I was a little worried because the main character Max seemed like an ass in previous books so I didn't even know if I wanted him to have an HEA. But in the end I couldn't resist reading this one and finding out what happened with Max. I'm happy with the way Chapman wrote it, he had to work hard enough that I didn't think he just stumbled into the relationship and it had enough cute elements with him and his son Henry that I forgave him for past mistakes.

Olivia I had a little trouble with. I did think she was really sweet but I got a little sick of how in the beginning she just let people walk over her and what she wanted. She definitely grew a backbone as the book went on, and there were explanations given for why she acted the way she did. I thought her whole family situation ended up being a little convenient in the end, but hey, it's supposed to have a happy ending!

Another favorite thing from this series was meeting Max's parents. I loved that they were supposed to be so intimidating but Olivia saw straight through them. It definitely added some funny moments to the book.

Great new series! Can't wait for the the next one.

Fantastic book. I loved Mac and Henry from when they showed up in Mystical Warrior. Mac was so very lost in his role as a father, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. Henry is adorable in his seriousness, and I loved seeing him begin to relax and become more like a kid in this book. Olivia is a terrific character, and I love her independence. She does have issues with standing up for herself, and I enjoyed seeing the effect that Mac had on her self-confidence. Olivia is trying to get the camp ready for a new season of campers, plus dealing with unwanted suitors and a mother-in-law who is a pain in the butt. When Mac comes early for some intense individual fatherhood coaching, he finds himself offering to help. He is immediately attracted to Olivia, and must find a way to convince her of his love and break it to her who and what he is. Olivia has been doing a great job of teaching Mac to be a dad and Henry how to be a kid. She also finds herself dealing with Mac's sister and near the end with Mac's parents. She also realizes that strange things have been happening since Mac's arrival, and must figure out what it is and if she can handle it. I thought the culminating scenes were terrific, and loved the way that Olivia stands up to Mac and also the rest of the people at Inglenook. Janet Chapman's trademark humor with the interaction between alpha male and the woman he loves is definitely present and had me frequently laughing out loud.

Hotness Rating 3 out of 5

Spellbound Falls is the first book of the Spellbound Falls series by Janet Chapman. While it struggled a bit in parts being a little too slow I really liked it overall.

Max was my kind of hero. All alpha but not ridiculously overbearing. I loved that he often used humor or distraction to get his way rather than in your face pushiness. On the same note Olivia was a really strong character that possessed her own strength but at the same time didn't realize how strong and assertive she could really be. Just witnessing her growth alone made the read worth every second. I loved seeing how Max grew as a father and in turn became a more understanding and tolerant son to his own father.

I feel like the characters and families of Spellbound Falls are going to keep me entertained for quite some time.

When I got the list of books for review from Holly a while back I was pretty excited about this one. It sounded like a fun contemporary romance and I’ve jonesing for contemporaries lately. I didn’t do a whole lot of research to see if this book was in a series or not and I definitely should have. If I had only seen the covers of the first 3 books in this series I would have known that this was a paranormal rather than a contemporary romance. That being said there isn’t a ton of the paranormal in this book but enough to make me scrunch up my face and say, “huh?” About halfway through the book I went to the author’s website and had an “aha” moment when I discovered that this was 4th in a series.

Olivia is a widow who lives with her 8 year old daughter, Sophie, at a camp that is run by her mother-in-law and father-in-law. She didn’t have a great marriage but everyone in town thinks that she’s still mourning her husband’s death because she keeps to herself. She does have some good friends though and with them she’s open and honest. Olivia is working to get the camp ready for the next session but has early guests in the form of Mac Oceanus and his six year old son Henry.

The camp is set up to help kids and parents learn how to communicate and be a family unit and since Mac found out just months before that he even had a son this seems like the perfect place for them. From the beginning Henry and Mac seem to be doing well and Mac volunteers to help Olivia with her work. This provides them a little bit of time getting to know each other and the two know that they will start a relationship but Mac is waiting for Olivia to ask for it as he wants her fully in the moment and not having any doubts.

Olivia is enthralled with Mac’s body but she really likes the man as well – there are just really strange things that happen when he’s around and she can’t figure out why. Eventually some things are revealed but when that happens Olivia isn’t shocked – but she is accepting.

The story is really about Olivia coming into her own as a person and not hiding in the shadows from herself and others – with the help of Mac and a few others. She was an orphan - or so she thought from the time she was 5 and had gotten sucked into her dead husband’s family only to be abandoned by him when he went off to serve in the military. But he was a cheater and their marriage was over long before he died. In the book we see Olivia finally coming to life and making a family of her own – with a little help from real relatives.

Mac and Henry were odd ducks to me. Henry was 6 but spoke like he was about 15. I had a hard time believing his age even when it was mentioned multiple times. There was mention of Henry being born in another century and that Mac and Henry were “settling” in this century but that was never explained.

It turns out that Mac is the son of the man who created Atlantis but we’re only told that Mac is a theurgist (wizard) and not exactly what and who he is. At one time he turns into a “beast” (not an evil one) but the beast is never described nor are we told if that’s his true form or how often he turns into it – no details. He has power but supposedly it was taken away – what kind of power was it in the first place? IDK. I frankly knew very little about Mac even at the end of the book. I’m not sure if he was in previous books and who and what he was was explained in those books and therefore the author felt that no further explanation was necessary? Again, IDK.

The romance in this story is really what saved the book for me. Mac and Olivia were great together and the author had them playing off of each other so well. I loved seeing Mac supporting Olivia and helping to be the strong woman he knew she could be – not that she was simpering to start but the strength just had to be brought to the surface. The romance and the sense of family in this book was the best part, imho.

If you plan on reading Spellbound Falls I would definitely recommend reading books 1-3 first. I’m hoping that would shed some light on book 4 and you wouldn’t be quite as lost as I was.

Olivia Baldwin, is barely making it, trying to make Inglewood Camp be successful, and saving up so she can own it herself one day. Then one day one of her co workers attempts to attack her, but then finds herself rescued by Mac, who finds himself very protective of Olivia, who needs his protection. Olivia is strongly attracted to Mac, but she doesn't know if she feels worthy enough to be with him. But when he kisses her, she stops thinking and only feels...Olivia also senses that there is something strange going on with Mac and his son. They aren't even close to normal, and there is something about Mac, that makes her want to run from him at times, because she senses a power about him. Mac, has recently discovered he has a son, and so he decided to come to Spellbound Falls, for some much needed bonding time with Henry. But then he meets Olivia, who intrigues him and even though he knows he could never truly love Olivia, he vows to unlock a hidden desire deep within Olivia, not knowing that he will find the love he thought he would never be able to have...
Spellbound Falls is the first in the most recent series by Janet Chapman. I have to say I can't believe I fell behind in this author. When I discovered this book in the library, I knew I just had to read it. Ever since I discovered this author, I have just loved the tender romances and witty humor found in her works, and now I have found another story that I have fallen in love with. Spellbound Falls is a bit different than her other books. It brings in what I would call "New Blood" where the hero is very powerful, royal and is from Atlantis, and is also known as a wizard. I really loved the way the story was put together, and it seemed a bit different than her other books. Spellbound Falls is a enchanting romance, filled with witty humor and a sense of fun and adventure. I loved the creativity and appealing story line that just draws you in instantly....A Magical Read!!!!

This was a nice, sweet romance with a bit of magic involved. Both Mac & Olivia are likable characters and many of their scenes together are quite fun. Olivia is a bit too much of a mouse for me sometimes, even though by the last 1/4 of the book you find you she maybe isn't as much of mouse as you thing by then it's too late. I don't expect a contemporary romance heroine to be a kick-ass UF type (that would actually be jarring for me) but I don't expect them to constantly run away, be unable to stand up to anyone and basically hide whenever she doesn't want to deal with something. She's quite nice but a bit of a damsel in distress. Mac does a lot of the rescuing and it's nice in it's own way. While I didn't dislike this book I think that dynamic is a bit too much of rigid gender stereotyping for me.

(April) Reading a Janet Chapman book is comforting - I like her characters and rarely find myself frustrated w/either the H/h, it's like connecting w/old friends. I am not a big fan of magic and wizards, but for some reason, these books work for me. This book was just charming - Mac was wonderful, and Henry was precocious which I usually hate but considering the way he was raised, his adult manners and speech worked. My only real complaint was I felt the ending was a bit rushed and left out some explanations and confrontations - between Olivia and her in laws, and Olivia and Mac (she figured out what he was, but I still would have liked more details spelled out from him to her). Either way, though, I liked it and look forward to the next book in this series.

Janet Chapman has a way of grabbing you and dragging you head first into her astonishing stories. Here's another series starter that sets up a wonderful place to live (in Maine, of course) with a charming, seductive man and a slightly shy widowed mother of one. I love how Mac and Olivia meet and the introduction of Henry was just so sweet. What a wonderful little boy who isn't! I honestly can't wait to see where this series is going to take the small town of Spellbound Falls. Though I'm guessing in the direction of a resort just like in her other Maine books. Similar concepts but definitely not the same story again and again.

Mac tries to build a relationship with his newfound six-year-old son, Henry. He has been battling with his own father for over three thousand years, so he has no clue how to bond with little image of himself.

Henry knows he is not the same as other children, but he wants the same as all, parents who love him, he just isn't sure how to get that.

Olivia works with families to build stronger bonds between them. Having her own struggles in that area makes things worse. Sometimes she just would rather fade away than risk the hurt of living.

Wonderful how they all work together to see past the demons and beasts to the love from inside.

I was going to give this book 4 stars. Only because Olivia drove me crazy with being such a whimp. But, towards the end, she turned into a tigress. About time!!
Now, Mac on the other hand--oh wow!! He might be centuries old, but the man is a hunk!! And he had some pretty awesome power.
A good story with twists and turns and of course, romance. In fact, I burned one side of my grilled ham and cheese sandwich, while reading a scene on a feather mattress in front of a roaring fireplace. Whew !! :)

*3+ Stars*

I think my opinion of this book suffered because of the narrator, Allyson Ryan. Nothing terrible, but the whole thing felt a little stiff and stilted. I know that was appropriate for a few of the characters, but it seemed to carry over to the overall feel of the story. I still enjoyed it and am toying with continuing the series. I did like the characters and that is mostly why, though the story has intriguing points too.

Spellbound Falls (2012) by Janet Chapman
.
This is book 1 of the Spellbound Series. There are 6 books in the series, although “the 7th would have been “Call It Magic” (in July 2017) if Janet hadn’t died. As of now it is not published but last I heard it was slated to come out in May of 2020. We will see. The Spellbound Falls books main hero was featured prominently in the previous (Midnight Bay) series of her books, especially “Mystical Warrior (whose series was closely tied to the series before that ( the Highlander 8 book series). Really, they are so closely tied that to totally understand things you should read all 3 of the series in order.)
.
Anyway, this isn’t really a review of the book so much as a comment. Although I will say that I enjoyed this book, as well as her 2 previous series. While reading fiction works you often come across some comment that rings so true it stays with you (and just elevates a character even more). This book had several that I loved so I wanted to write them somewhere. As they came later in the book and I don’t want to ruin the surprise I will just leave them alone without much further explanation.
.
This first one is so true (and I wish all kids and adults realized this when said kids are growing up). “It might be your father’s job to keep you safe and give you the tools you’ll need as an adult,… but it’s your job to constantly be testing your own limits as well as his. If you keep doing everything you’re told without question , and always worry about not upsetting people, then you’re going to stay a little boy inside forever…Pushing boundaries is the growing part of growing up…”.
.
Then we have a philosophy we should all learn. “Life is neither fair nor unfair, Olivia: it merely is. In fact, it’s completely neutral.”
.
And the final writing that I totally loved is not in the meat of the book but in the Letter at the end from Lakewatch addressed to readers, from Janet. If you read the book the concept here would explain itself. “Fairly early on in our marriage, my husband found out that a big strong hug cured just about any ailment a woman might have. Sadness, anger, frustration, fear, low self-esteem, hopelessness, bad hair-nothing stands a chance against a powerful hug…But I feel I should caution you that hugging only works in one direction, because …. have a woman hug a man and he immediately thinks, ‘Hey, she’s touching me, so that must mean she wants to have sex with me right now’.”
.
Just absolutely love these.

This book made me uncomfortable but in that way where you're mirroring the leading character's emotions - doesn't mean I like it but I get it. Seriously though, everyone needs to just listen to Olivia and also stop counting on her good nature geez.

Favorite parts
EZRA IS ADORABLE I love this, I love the pretend-crotchety storeowner who is actually a gigantic sweetheart even before we learn his secret.
Max actually does learn and grow from the things that Olivia shares! He still sucks at listening when she says No sometimes and he REALLY should've told her the truth sooner, but at least he tries. Sometimes.
The kids are very sweet, and so are the horses
Olivia gets super sassy by the end and it's great
Also, circling back to Ezra and the secret, this was one of those books where I was actually able to guess the secret just before it was revealed and it made me audibly gasp twice
The reveal of Titus being a secret sweetheart too was great
Small town life will always hold a special place in my heart and I love the townsfolk we get to meet.

Meh things
I can't decide what mythos EXACTLY is being followed here because while they focus a lot on Greek I feel like it doesn't QUITE fit. Made me a little confused at points.
Max DOES grow in a lot of ways, mostly pertaining to his kid, but even right at the end he is trying to control Olivia and make her do things instead of listening to her responses. (Basically "Go wait over there" "But I need you and I don't care what you look like" "I do and that matters more go wait over there" a couple times before he finally gives in)
And also what's with the resort thing? Like. I don't remember her ever mentioning she wanted a resort, just a really nice camp. That one felt like it came out of nowhere and she just had to give in on it.
They keep saying that her stepfather (Jacob? I think?) is nice and kind to her but we so rarely see them interact at all that it just feels like lip service to kind of temper the whole Eileen thing.
Sam doesn't do a whole lot to endear me to him. Even towards the end.

2.5 stars - it was 3 star while reading it, dropped to a 2 star with the ending.

A widow with a little daughter in a small town in Maine, working for the camp of her in-laws, meets a mysterious guy with a 6 year old son. Between more and more personal revelations, some are surprising, most are not, the two fall for each other.

I kept reading this book for two reasons: it was well written, and I was curious what/who the guy was.
I wasn’t happy with it because:
- The kids talked like adults.
- There was no sexual tension, the woman had no color whatsoever.
- The guy was a controlling stalker, in a nice wrapping, but still a control freak.
- The woman sure was taking weird things happening without much asking. I usually ask more questions when my boyfriend picks up wild animals from the road and brings them home, unless he stores them in the freezer.
- The woman was a victim in every aspect of her past, *gee* poor lady.
- The ending was overly dramatic and absolutely unnecessary (
- The epilogue was mushy and did not even deal with the protagonist but the rest of the family.
- Many of the characters were clichéd.

This said: it’s a cozy read with cute kids (if one likes that in a romance), a strong alpha male and a somewhat likeable female protagonist, the setting had a lot of promise, unfortunately it did not work for me.

This was part of the Audible Romance package, so I think I snagged it a few months ago and finally got around to listening to it. Description says nine hours, and I'm not quite sure how nine hours passed with so little actually happening. I even double checked my bookmarks to ensure I backtracked to cover parts where I got distracted, or didn't leave it playing when I walked away. Edit - 11 hours 38 minutes in length....I honestly feel like I missed about 6-7 hours worth of this story cause I do not spending this much time listening to it.

Even thought this is the first in the series, it appears there is a related series this book references. This means either you need to read those to know what is going on with the male lead, or the author just hadn't fleshed out that character much. The author does not provide much in the way of descriptions of anything, other than "cinnamon eyes."

There was so much crammed into this book, that was wrapped up in a short chapter, that I was confused and irritated. Like here is a hurricane of activity and revelations while a physical hurricane is happening.

I'm starting to realize most of the books available through Audible's Romance Package are not worth the low rate.

Fantasy woven into and in intriguing love story

Mac is a strong character with a need to protect. He has just gotten custody of his six year old son Henry. He didn’t know about Henry until his mother died. He has made arrangements to stay at Inglenook where they provide programs and opportunities for parents and children to bond. Olivia runs Inglenook with here in-laws. She has been a single Mother since her husband was killed in action. She is very protective of her daughter Sophie. When the two meet Olivia feels the world tilt off center and Mac finds himself dreaming of Olivia at night.

Olivia has been on her own since her mother died when she was four. Her experiences in foster care taught her to become invisible but she is stronger than she seems. Mac attitude as the strong man in charge does not set well.

With the fantasy woven into their love story Olivia and Mac become one of the best stories I have read. Their story is a unique as the other characters. Many twists in the story kept me reading until I finished. I recommend.
