Nobody knows where she is, and as the book goes on, people become more and more convinced that Tom is to blame. Carter and Co., Alice's family and the police all give him a hard time, and the police try to get him to confess multiple times.* Tom gets a call from Gash who claims to have Alice and tells Tom he'll release her if Tom gets his dad to do a deal so that Gash doesn't have to go back to juvie.* Tom gets another call and an email from someone who calls themself the 'watcher', which as a short video attached of Alice crying. * Tom has no idea where she's being kept, but after posting the video online someone tells him that there are two song being played in the background of the clip. Tom realises that the second song is the man (Jim) with the portable amp who they heard playing at one of Alice's quiet spots.* Tom goes to where he'd heard Jim play before, and realises that there's a burnt-down church right near, on Water Street. He looks at what Alice wrote in her diary, and reads the part about her 'walking on water' and 'burning down a church' and he figures that this must be the church that she burned down.* Tom calls Gash and tells him to come to the church to meet his father to sign some documents. Then he calls the police and says that he's found Alice and she's in the basement of the burned down church.* Tara then come out of the church and tells Tom that Alice isn't in there, and that she was looking for the miracle.* Tom takes Tara back to his apartment to talk, but they don't get to talk because Gash turns up, and then the police turn up, and Tom has to run before he's arrested.* Tom goes back after the police have gone, but finds Tara dead on his bed. He calls for an ambulance and does a runner again.* Tom goes to hide out at the house that Alice took him to once, and goes through Tara's bag that he took. He finds a photograph and learns that Chi-Chi is actually a girl at school called Shaquina.
