Warren M. Billings received his PhD from Northern Illinois University in 1968. He is Distinguished Professor of History, Emeritus at the University of New Orleans and Visiting Professor of Law, William and Mary Law School.
The first half reads well and would be interesting to any reader. The last half bogs down in its details reading much more like academic writing and would be interesting only to a select few. I would recommend the first four chapters to anyone.
Billings obviously knows his subject and as an historian I have no complaints.
Incredible to realize that John Smith only led in Jamestow for one year before being sent back to England to recover from gunpowder explosion. very possible, due to his unpopularity with 'gentlemen' he might have been victim of foul-play. One of his exploratory exploits, he was captured by Indians of Powhatan - only Pocohontos saved him by laying herslef atop his body when they threatened to chop his head off.
His later sailed to new world again but not to jamestown. His maps of the Massachussetts coastline were used to by the future Plymouth colonists with success due to their accuracy.
Shipwreck in Bermuda on way back of Christopher Newport and John Rolfe was revealing.
A good concise history of Jamestown. Has a few typos but not much else I felt was worth complaining about. I picked this little boi up in the Jamestown souvenir shop for a few bucks, and I can't really complain that much anyway. Learned all I needed to know.
I enjoyed this one. Jamestown resembled a hard past life and development. The Pocahontas insight was pretty interesting. Wish this book had more information on the artifacts displayed in the book what they found and what they were used for in the past. Overall great book!
I love history, but this book was hard for me to get into because it felt like it was written like a textbook. Otherwise it seems like a good book, with good information on the subject.
