More Than Ordinary: Enjoying Life with God offers a thoughtful and enduring framework for understanding faith as a lived relationship rather than a spiritual checklist.
Doug Sherman and LeRoy Eims guide readers away from performance-driven spirituality and toward a faith grounded in daily responsiveness to God. The book emphasizes that spiritual growth is not about mastering religious tasks, but about learning to recognize God’s presence, generosity, and delight in ordinary life.
One of the book’s strengths is its clarity and accessibility. Complex spiritual ideas are presented in a way that feels practical rather than abstract, encouraging readers to enter into ongoing conversation with God and to integrate faith naturally into everyday routines. The tone is invitational rather than prescriptive, making the guidance feel sustainable rather than overwhelming.
The authors also emphasize multiplication passing on what is learned through authentic relationships. This focus gives the book lasting relevance for individuals, small groups, and mentors seeking to nurture spiritual growth in others.
More Than Ordinary is well suited for readers looking for a simplified, relational approach to Christian living. Its emphasis on joy, attentiveness, and daily transformation makes it a valuable resource for those seeking depth without rigidity and faith that grows organically over time
Although the title was meant to speak about how we can live our lives with Christ, I think it aptly describes this book’s contents as well. This is no ordinary book on Christian living. In fact, this is one of the best books I have ever read in the Christian living category (and I have hundreds of books of that genre in my personal library!).
There are two fundamental categories of things that are the most important to know the truth about. One is, who is God—what does He say about Himself—what is His character really like. The other is, who are we—what does God say about us—what is the truth about where we stand with God and what He thinks of us. This book mainly addresses the first fundamental issue and does so in a brilliant way. He does tell us quite a lot about God, but this author also makes you want to find out for yourself—brilliant.
I love the way Mr. Sherman talks about God. In that respect, he reminds me of Graham Cooke (whom he quoted a couple of times). He talks about how God relentlessly pursues us, how He is kind, and happy and how much He loves us (and lots more).
This book is, without a doubt, one of the best I've ever read on Christian living. I'm so thankful God lead me to it. It couldn't have come at a better time in my life.
This book gives practical insight into how to build a strong relationship with the God who adores us, by interacting with him throughout each moment of our day. Mr. Sherman shows us how we can have deep peace, satisfaction and joy by encountering God in this way.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that desires a deeper, more fulfilling life in Christ, especially if you are going through a season of doubt or discouragement.
It's been a remarkably fulfilling and exciting read. I can't wait to see how my life will change as a result of reading this book and practicing the concepts by which Mr. Sherman lives.
I definitely plan to recommend this book to others and will be purchasing copies to give as gifts as well.
This book came through my hands to give to someone else, but I took the time to read it before passing it on because I knew Doug Sherman when I lived in Colorado Springs. He was a part of the Navigator ministry while a cadet at the Air Force Academy. He was a military pilot for several years, staff member for Navigators, and a businessman. He refers fondly to his wife and three children. Lots of quotable words, but a favorite was: "Unless we are increasingly convinced that God is passionate about our best interests and that every good response to Him is vastly better for us than living independently, we will not sustain loyalty to Him over a lifetime." "God is predictable, circumstances are not." "Only God can give us favor with men.... We can never get self-centered, people to honor us in the way we want them to. Even if they do, it will never last long." Tozer: "What comes to mind when we think about God is the most important thing about us."
This was an interesting book. The start was very captivating, and then the last 2/3 of the book seemed to be just saying almost the same things in slightly different ways -- talk to God constantly and do everything as to Him. An important message, to be sure, as well as the theme of giving Him credit for behind-the-scenes supernatural work like changing attitudes, giving us or a coworker a good idea, etc. To me it felt a bit repetitive in this part, though. Closing out the book in the epilogue were some journaled thoughts about Jesus that are very encouraging...looking forward to His soon return!
Loved this book. Maybe this is stuff I'd been taught before, but this time I really got something. Grateful for the author. This was a freebie on Amazon a while back. How blessed I am
