Back in 2005, when I bought my first beehive (complete with a ferocious colony of honeybees), it wasn't long before I felt like giving up. I'm allergic to beestings and not fond of honey.... but Ted Hooper's 'Guide to Bees and Honey' got be right back on track. This book is not only packed full of information on and experience of beekeeping, but is also very easy to read and, dare I say it, actually exciting! You feel the author's passion for bees and it is this more than anything else that kept me going. I still keep bees today and this is always the book I turn to whenever my enthusiasm starts to wane. I could not recommend it more highly.
This book gets credit for having lots of technical stuff about the bees themselves. Diagrams and pictures of bees and developing bees with detailed physiology, as well as all the normal stuff about how to keep bees. Shall keep it to refer to.
This book is a very informative introduction for those who are interested in the art and science of beekeeping.
Ted Hooper supplies an engaging narration, describing everything from readying honey for purchase, to diseases that affect the hive, to the mechanisms of the individual honey bee. The reader can feel secure in Ted Hooper's vast knowledge, which is the knowledge of experience, not of a text book. He describes not only the most common methodology, but also provides insight into his little tricks of the trade, born from years of experience in the industry.
The Guide to Bees and Honey is, in Ted Hooper's own words, by no means an all-inclusive guide. What it is, however, is a valuable read for any aspiring beekeeper.
Good information for both beginning and experienced beekeepers, very readable. Dry, humorous observations. "Regarding relocating your hive: either less than 3 feet or more than 3 miles." I wish I had read this before I moved my hive last summer!
A very fascinating hand book, which you can read from cover to cover on a plane (which is what I did)
Nature is really great, and how the bees do it is fun reading. Despite what the title says, and suggests a boring "hand book" I give it 5 stars ! It is exciting !
