MICHELLE LARSEN has found a man straight out of a romance novel–handsome, fit, educated, and pulling in a six-figure income. Despite the exceptional qualities and his obvious interest in her, things are moving too slow between them. Unlike most men who can’t wait to get in her pants, this particular man refuses to take things to the next level.
DARYL JACKSON has grown tired of the nightclub scene and wants to settle down, but he has a secret that always seems to interrupt any potential love connection once he reveals it. He believes Michelle is the ideal woman, but can she handle the truth?
After six weeks of dating, and still no attempt from him to get her “horizontal,” Michelle grows sex-starved. She is driving herself crazy trying to figure out Daryl’s problem! During a weekend getaway in Palm Springs, Michelle finally puts an end to the what’s-wrong-with-Daryl guessing game and demands to know what’s up. Not only does Daryl answer all her questions, Michelle learns first hand that you really need to be careful with what you wish for!

I feel the need to preface my review here with the sad truth of just how white I am. I’m not just white – I’m British white. The Burgoine family tree is completely pale. I make snow look street. And in the direct light of a Canadian June sun, I can cause damage to unprotected corneas.
I was a wee bit nervous when I got A Hard Man is Good to Find. I feel stupid admitting that now, but in the interest of an honest review, if you’ve ever looked at a book and thought “I am so not the audience for this” then let my reading of A Hard Man is Good to Find be a lesson to you.
I loved it.
In Michelle, James W. Lewis brings a heroine with a brash conversational voice to visit, and you’ll enjoy her stay. She’s a joy – her stream of consciousness, with its many visits to her currently underfed sexual appetites – is a blast to read, and hilarious in its candid tone. Michelle takes you on a brief tour of some miserable exes – or one night stands – before launching you on her tale of what might just be the best thing that could happen to a sista in years.
(Okay, I tried. The moment I typed “sista” there, I winced. You can’t hear my voice, so you don’t know how horrible that was, but I promise never to do it again. Also, the sun is coming out, please don your sunglasses and do not stare directly into the white boy.)
Anyone and everyone can connect with Michelle’s fantastic romp through the horrible exes. The guy intent on attempting to try some anal without getting Michelle’s permission first; the guy with next to nothing below the belt and the stamina to match; the guy who seems allergic to bathing – these are experiences to which everyone can nod knowingly, raise one hand, and agree. Dating? Sucks.
But with her attitude and a desire to see herself get what she deserves – and Michelle deserves plenty, thankyouverymuch – Michelle decides to change her method. She focuses on herself for a while. Hits the gym, gets healthy, finishes her degree...
...and meets Daryl.
Daryl looks like sex on a stick – and Mr. Lewis here can be absolutely confident in his ability to make a man a mouth-wateringly enticing experience through Michelle’s voice. Her comparisons are solid, and rooted in contemporary culture, and make a visual image complete with a weak-in-the-knees effect. Daryl and Michelle definitely click, things get playful, then simmer, then...
Then Daryl suggests they slow down and Michelle should go home.
I beg your pardon?
This tease is the last half of the book and it is this omnipresent – and hopefully not impotent – struggle Michelle now faces: Daryl just doesn’t seem to want to get it on. Is she his woman on the side? Is he – oh please no – on the down-low? Is he in need of a little blue helper? Does all that scratching mean he’s waiting for something to clear up? As she gets wrapped up in potential rationale after potential rationale, you’ll laugh and smirk at her antics as she tries to figure out if Daryl is “the one” or if he’s just another one of the losers she’s managed to attract.
I won’t ruin the mystery, but I will say that I did see it coming and delighted in the reveal nonetheless. Michelle’s snark is a blast to read, and her ricochet from theory to theory makes you laugh and groan all at once. I also greatly appreciated her in-your-face desire. An internal dialogue with the reader, Michelle is not one to mince words. After weeks with a beautiful man, she wants some action, and she’s not shy about telling you so. And who could blame her? Daryl looms on the page like a dessert you want to gobble whole.
My only issues with the book are minor. Sometimes new characters pop in and out without a real introduction – Michelle has a sudden new friend that she has apparently met at class – a place we’ve never gone with her – and it jarred a bit. Something similar happens near the end, where suddenly new people are involved in her life, and the explanation of who they are comes after they’ve been around a bit too long. It left me wondering if I should already know who these people were, and made me think I had I missed something earlier. It’s a small criticism, and easily forgiven since Michelle’s narrative feels so natural. Also, as this is an erotica review site, I do feel I should mention that while Michelle’s exploits with her exes and losers at the start of the book are – amusingly – blunt and erotic (if poor lovers can be erotic), most of the book has the erotic content entirely in Michelle’s head as she tries to suss out what the hell is keeping Daryl from stepping up to the plate. If you want sweat soaked erotic content on every page, this isn’t the book for you. Personally, I really didn’t mind waiting for the big reveal. The end result of A Hard Man is Good to Find is a satisfied reader. I adored Michelle. I liked Daryl. The friction and frustration of Michelle’s desire being unfulfilled was absolute fun. Definitely give this a go.
Michelle Larsen has not been so lucky in love. It hasn't been for lack of trying. She just seems to keep meeting rejects. That is until she meets Daryl Jackson. He's what Michelle has been looking for and the feelings seem to be mutual. But he's too good to be true, right?
"A Hard Man Is Good to Find" is a very quick, fun, entertaining and easy read. However, what works for the novel also works against the novel - the narration. Told through the voice of main character Michelle in a conversational tone, her conversation and attitude at times were exaggerated in an attempt to be funny. It made the narration seemed forced, not true/authentic and/or a man trying too hard to talk and think like a woman. Had the author pulled back some, it would have made for a more even and believable read. "A Hard Man Is Good to Find" is a much lighter read than his debut novel "Sellout," but both are recommendable reads. James W. Lewis is definitely an author to add to your shelf.
I received a signed copy of “A Hard Man is Good to Find” by James W. Lewis for free through Goodreads First Reads.
Michelle Larsen keeps meeting Mr. Wrong. She experiences one failed date after another until finally she gives up on men to focus on herself. When she least expects it she meets Daryl Jackson who by all appearances seems like Mr. Right. But after six weeks of dating Daryl, he has yet to pursue a sexual relationship. So what is wrong with Daryl? What is he trying to hide? Sex starved Michelle is ready to go to the next level but can she handle Daryl’s secret?
I found the three reject scenes absolutely hilarious. I thought the diction of the dialogue was fantastic and very fitting. It felt as if Michelle was telling me this story about her man problems. I loved this book.
DNF I got through chapter 3 and just couldn't take it anymore. I was turned off from the first page, but kept reading to see if it would get better. It has taken me from March 20th-23rd just to get this far. The narrator and main character Michelle is just so annoying. There is not one redeemable quality about her from what I have read so far. I can tolerate the ghetto and ebonics talk with the best of them, but this girl is just too much and it just gets to be irritating after a very short while. She did have a couple funny one liners but that was not enough to keep me interested. This will probably be my last book from this author.
I wasn’t sure if I would like this book because of the language and it wasn’t something I could relate to as a seasoned reader. I actually found it amusing and the characters were interesting. It gave me an insight on lives I’m not familiar with. Kudos to the author for an interesting read. I’m still scratching my head😊
As I continue to read more and more literary works, I discovered that I’m not into the “stereotypical black woman” kind of books. However, this book was packed full of humor as I found that the author really was in touch with how most women speak to each other when it comes to the male species. Now I’m not saying that this lasted through the entire book but it held my attention enough to really make me appreciate the effort this Male author made in relating to his readership.
Michelle Larsen, who has used her sexuality for the not-so-good is determined to find love. Darryl Jackson is the unsuspecting soul who has discovered that there is more to a relationship besides sex. The story line can be interpreted as typical. The 1st person writing style was a refreshing variation and effectively presented. The author had me questioning if he was a male or female because the voice of his lead character Michelle was very natural.
At first I was thinking this book would be a provisionally entertaining book about a horny black woman who was looking for Mr. Right and Mr. Right now, but it turned out to be more of a contemporary love story with an unbelievable twist.
Author James Lewis kept me interested due to the humor and the occasional quick witted dialogue, however intermittently the book began to bore. One of the most memorable parts of this book for me would be when Michelle and Darryl finally decided to embark on the coitus part of their relationship. After a rambunctious rump in the hay with her dream man, she was confronted in the hallway by kids that overheard her screams of pleasure and mistakenly confused the sounds with those of a donkey. Classic! Consistency and development are key components to a great novel and minor details add to a story. I found that some of those distinctive traits were missing in this novel. Such as, what does the lead characters do for a living? The back cover synopsis suggests that Darryl makes six-figures, but this was never expounded upon. We know that Michelle works in an office but what does she do? When the book opens up it immediately starts with her sexual conquest or lack thereof. On Page 126 Darryl is driving a Yukon and then on 127 it’s a Blazer and back to a Yukon on page 128.
Those types of things may or may not be missed by the average reader but should be addressed by the author for future books. I give this book a 4 star rating.

A Hard Man is Good to Find, written by James W. Lewis, is an erotic tale that starts out as a comedy, but morphs into a sweet romance. The story is told through the eyes of Michelle, a single young woman looking for Mr. Right. The author writes so convincingly through the eyes of a woman that maybe he was a female in a previous life?
The way Michelle talks was a bit hard for this Kentucky lady to understand at first, but it didn't take me long to catch on. According to the author, Michelle's style of speech is known as 'girlfriend' talk and slang. He said that some black women talk this way after a few drinks when they are relaxed and having a conversation with some really close friends.
Michelle's journey to finding Mr. Right is hilarious. Each Mr. Wrong she encounters has issues that she understandably doesn't want to deal with. I thought the entire book was going to be about the various men that Michelle encounters and how they were all wrong for her, but as I read on I found that the story had depth and a deeper meaning.
When Michelle meets a man who doesn't immediately throw her down and rip her clothes off, she thinks something is wrong with him. This man isn't giving her all she is looking for in a relationship, but he is so sweet to her. She thinks he must have some kind of problem that he is uncomfortable discussing with her. There has to be some horrible reason he doesn't want to take their relationship to the next level. She is bound and determined to discover his secret. With amazing insight into the ways that most women act, the author shows how easy it is for a woman to become suspicious.
His secret? Well, I'm not going to tell you that. I will say that you need to be careful what you wish for because you might just get it.
Do you like for your books to have eroticism, romance, and comedy all wrapped into a neat package? If so, then you will love this book. If you don't appreciate erotic fiction, then you probably should stay away from this one.
Michelle is a woman who has had her fair share of relationships that didnt work. Being beautiful, hard working and successful the only thing shes missing is someone by her side. She has dealt with her share of men, to the man who doesnt listen to instructions and likes to place things where they do not belong, to the man not working with much in the man department and lastly to the man who rather go out as he his. She deals with them all and nicely rejects them for the rejects that they are. Whats interesting about this is that some family may have dealt with some of these issues when dating. Michelle just about gives up on the dating scene until dating basically shows up close to her door. Will she take her chances and get to know this mystery man making him the one, or will this man tend to be like the others and have issues?
The author being a man, in my opinion did a good job writing the character as a woman from her point of view. There were a few funny parts that you couldnt help to laugh at as you read about the things that Michelle is dealing with as well as going through. I think some females can understand Michelle and what she is going through in terms of dating and the guy not being who he seems to be at first. When Michelle mets Daryl she feels like he is the one, hes nice and sweet and thinks about her but he doesnt try again with her and that gets Michelle to thinking that Daryl is not being honest about something. As Michelle was trying to figure ot what was wrong with Daryl, I was also trying to figure out and we were both wrong. That secret will have you shaking your head once it is revealed.
I think the book started off a bit slow, and some places seemed to be a little dragged out, as well as a few minor editing issues but other than that I did enjoy the story. For that reason I give the book 3.5 stars. This is the second time reading from the author, I read his other book SellOut and I enjoyed that one as well. I would recommend it though it was a different kind of read that was enjoyable. Can't wait to see what else the author has in store for the readers.
I have a warning for you. Be prepared to laugh out loud when you read this book! Seriously….I was reading this book on my Kindle Fire while I was working out at the gym and I was literally laughing out loud. People around me probably thought I was crazy (especially since I was also listening to music….I love that I can read and listen to music both on the fire).
The main character is Michelle, and James W. Lewis did an amazing job writing from a woman’s point of view. I got to read about various men that she met and the problems that she was having with them. She was about ready to give up and decided she would finish her bachelors degree and eat better and exercise more. Then she met Daryl. He was perfect it seemed, but he just seemed to be taking things really slow. She was trying to figure him out. Finally he decided to tell her his big secret. Some secret it was too! What a shock!!
I’m telling you right now….read this book! I don’t remember the last time I actually laughed out loud while reading a book. There was NOTHING about this book that I didn’t like. I liked every minute of it! I absolutely can’t wait to read another book by James W. Lewis. Wait…..there is something I didn’t like…..that it had to end! I highly, highly recommend this book! It’s definitely a favorite of mine!
A Hard Man is Good to Find by James W. Lewis is a hilarious erotic comedy about a young woman named Michelle Larsen who finds herself in an interesting predicament with her new someone, Daryl Jackson. Is it true what they say about black men? From start to finish this book was hilarious to say the least! I loved the colorful commentary that Michelle always referred to when speaking about the men she had previously dated. Whether it's reject number 1, 2 or 3 Michelle has hilarious names for each one. “Booty Bandit, Anal Intruder, Captain Funkie Azz, etc...” I must say Lewis' characters were well thought out and his dialogue kept me laughing until the very end of the book. Michelle's character is the kind of best friend every girl needs. She tells it like it is! The comedy within this novel is fantastic! Get ready to laugh out loud! This is a great book especially for young women who are still in the dating scene. Michelle's character dates your typical pick of losers. It's extremely relate able because most woman have encountered such men. Whether it's men with bad hygiene or not so pleasing packages. Overall, I would have to say A Hard Man is Good to Find is the perfect book if you're looking for some comedic relief. I read it in one sitting! The characters are extremely likeable and the story is great! I can't wait for James W. Lewis' next book!
Michelle is trying to find her knight in shining armor. Her "ONE and only". The problem is while on that search she runs into some not so terrific men. Michelle seems to have a knack for attracting those she DOESN'T want to spend life with...at first. Then she finds THE PERFECT MAN!! She's not sure why he doesn't want her in a sexual way, but she's not giving up. All kinds of things run through her mind ( as they would most women). She's in for a surprise.
Remember what it was like to hit the clubs looking for that one special guy? The blind dates, the fix-ups by well meaning friends? If so, you'll enjoy Michelle's adventure even more!! You'll be able to relate to some of the wonderful characters created in this story. It is adult themed, as noted, so not for everyone but if you give it a chance I know you will love this book as much as I did.
This book is laugh out loud funny at parts and hits home in others. I was in tears for part of this book from laughing so hard. I was laughing though because I can so relate to what Michelle goes through. I've had some of those conversations with friends. There isn't anything I dislike about this book! Except maybe that a man was able to hit home on so many points we females felt were well hidden..LOL! Mr. Lewis is a terrific writer and I will definitely be on the look out for more of his books.
I'll have to say this book had me laughing from beginning til the end. Michelle was looking for her perfect man. She went through a few toads until she found what she was looking for, at least that's what she thought. Daryl was the perfect guy, so it seems. Unfortunately he was hiding something. Michelle had a imagination out of this world and she couldn't for the life of her figure out what Daryl was hiding. Once the secret is out, OMG will Michelle be able to handle it. Will Daryl still be the perfect guy? Only time will tell. One click and see how Michelle deal with the different men on her way to finding the perfect man.
This book had me cracking up! While it was extremely funny, it did have a lot of romantic ideas sprinkled into the mix, which made me like it even more. After reading this book, I definitely have to check out some of the author's other titles. It was very easy to get into, and I just wanted to keep reading without stopping until I found myself at the end. Michelle was one of those characters who had me laughing out loud throughout the entire book. I love it when a book actually allows me to imagine them as the author (hopefully) intended me to.
I loved this story.....it was refreshingly funny, while addressing the issues women face on the dating scene. James definitely has a way with words and knows how to coin a phrase. It was real and very relate-able. I was amazed at how well James understand the female mind. Excellent job! Daryl definitely has a jaw dropping secret....all I will say is Montell Jordan's song "What's On Tonight" kept playing over and over in my head while reading this book. I definitely enjoyed it and do recommend it.
The title immediately piqued my interest, however when I first began reading this I was skeptical I would enjoy it. Much to my delighted surprise, the humorous and casual dialogue drew me in. Many romance novels are entirely too serious, lacking in light-heartedness. The voice of this author is playful and fun. There were times I was laughing so hard I had a stitch in my side! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am definitely open to reading additional works from James W. Lewis.
I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS TYPE OF BOOK, DISSAPOINTING. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I LOVE EROTICA. I DISLIKED THE MAIN FEMALE MICHELL, SHE WAS SIMPLE AND BEHAVED LIKE A UNPAID HOOKER OR WHAT SHE WOULD CALL A "HO". DON'T WOMEN HAVE ANY SELF CONTROL ANYMORE, SHE SPRED'EM FOR EVERY MAN SHE MET. MOST WOMEN ARE ALWAYS SAYING THEY WANT A GOOD MAN BUT THAT SEEMS LIKE SUCH A LIE. BEHAVING LIKE SHE DID I WONDER WHY WOULD A GOOD MAN EVEN WANT HER. CHICKENHEAD SLUT! THE HEA LEFT ME WITH MIXED EMOTIONS. ;<
I won a copy of "A Hard Man is Good to Find" free through Goodreads First Reads. This is an erotic and hilarious book about a woman who's had enough Mr. Wrongs in her life. When she's finally convinced herself she doesn't need a man and to focus on herself someone comes into her life and then things really get interesting. Fun, quick read!
Overall this was a GOOD read....not sure how I felt about what the author called the conversational tone of the story......there were alot of LOL moments through out the story......Michelle had you cracking up at some of the things she said and some of her thoughts.....but you just had to LOVE Daryl he was such a sweetheart.....
This was a fun book. I laughed out loud at some scenes and smiled at others. Although I guessed his "problem" it was still funy to watch the story unfold. And when she discovered the "problem" I thought that was the funniest scene.
The book was good but the author himself is very childish. This is the first time I ever did this but he really pissed me off and I would never ever buy another one of his books. Grow up Mr. Lewis!!!
I thought this book was good. It started off a little slow to me. As I went on ole girl was hilarious. I would recommend this book. I laughed out loud so many times. My co-workers would ask me what I was laughing at.
