Squeak was a small mouse who lived with his family in a small hole behind a cupboard but he was a scared mouse, a stay-at-home mouse.

One night his sister, Nibbles, tempts him to take a walk to the kitchen where she says there is yummy chocolate cake, 'as big as a wheel'.

Squeak loves cake but he is worried in case he gets lost or, even worse, he meets the big ginger cat who lives in the house.

Nibbles has a great idea of how to ensure he does not get lost. She fetches a big ball of string and ties one end round Squeak so that if he does get lost he can retrace his steps by following the string.

Then the adventures begin and as they make their way to the kitchen for the cake, Squeak imagines all sorts of dangers and keeps screaming, 'It's The Cat, It's The Cat'. But each time it is some object that she imagines to be the cat.

After wandering round and round and trailing the string everywhere, they finally arrive at the kitchen and begin eating the cake. Nibbles is really enjoying herself and so is Squeak, to a degree. His worry is that as a scared mouse he is also a want-to-go-home mouse.

After a few more imaginary frights, the real thing arrives - the cat! 'EEEK,' screams Squeak. But the ginger cat gets entangled in the trailing string and Nibbles and Squeaky enjoy themselves eating the cake and playing on the prostrate, and tied up, cat!

Squeaky is so bold that the next time he meets the cat he is determined to shout, 'BOO!' at him!

The illustrations are charming and the story is an amusing one that demonstrates bravery and winning against the odds. I feel sure it will appeal to children, especially if read aloud.

I have twins: identical twins. The most noticable difference between the two is one is smaller than the other one. My smaller one is my brave one; the bigger one is prone to being a 'scaredy cat'. She's uncountably and randomly afraid of all sorts of things. Somethings are understandable: dogs and electric motors. Other things are less easy to explain: helium filled balloons, for example.

When we take the girls to the library, which is to be honest several times a week, we allow the girls to each pick out a book (or two, or three, they take after their parents). Often, particularly my little one, has very good taste. You can tell a book from its cover - especially if it is a picture book. The last time we went to the library my 'little bit' picked out 'Scaredy Mouse'.

I love 'Scaredy Mouse'. It's a very fun book to read. I get to do voices. I get to go, "IT'S THE CAT! IT'S THE CAT!"

When I go, "IT'S THE CAT! IT'S THE CAT!", my 'little bit' gggggggiiiiiiiiggles and grins. :D

And that makes her Daddy smile.

But when I go, "IT'S THE CAT! IT'S THE CAT!", her bigger, stronger, more atheletic, generally more assertive sister buries her head in my shoulder or hides under a pillow, and says, "That's too scary for me."

Tee hee. They are both so cute.

Scaredy Mouse is a book about a small mouse who is scared of everything. In particular he is scared of a cat who was not even there most of the time. He struggles with doing his everyday activities and has an excuse for not leaving his hole every time. When he does rarely leave, he mistakes every day house hold items for the horrible cat. The little mouse and his sister venture out to find the chocolate cake. In order to find their way back to the hole, the mouse tied a string to his foot so it would be a guide bak home wherever they went. They went all over the house spreading the string in every direction. When they were almost back to the hole, the cat appeared. Luckily when the little mouse ran, his string that was strung out all over the place, pulled tight, tripped and tied up the cat! This story is action packed and very relatable because everyone is scared of something. The illustrations make the book even more enjoyable and give the reader a picture of the events occurring perfectly.

In this story of a mouses's adventure, Squeak and his sister Nibbles leave their mouse hole and travel through a house to find the delicious chocolate cake. Squeak is very nervous about leaving, so his sister ties yarn to him so he can be connected to home and follow it back after eating the cake. As they explore the house, Squeak is paranoid and thinks that he sees the house cat in multiple places, but it becomes just his imagination. The brother and sister find the cake and eat. As they are returning to their hole, they see a frightening sight - the cat! The beast, when pouncing for them, gets caught in the yarn that Squeak has carried around and is unable to move or hurt the mice. Squeak's fear is diminished in the cats defeat, and later makes it a habit to scare the cat whenever seen in the house.

The book has very colorful artwork that is fun to look at. You can identify many of the objects around the mice, such as remotes, furniture, stamps, and keys. These details make the house look realistic and warm.

Squeak the mouse was afraid of everything. He never would leave his home under the stairs. His sister Nibbles tells him about a delicious looking cake in the kitchen and convinces Squeak to come along in spite of his biggest fear Ginger cat. Squeak if worried he may get lost on this big adventure. Nibbles ties string around him to help ease his fear.

As the two scurry through the long hall towards the kitchen Squeak jumps with fear at every turn. He just knows that Ginger cat is lurking in the shadows. Their first encounter is an orange and white scarf. And then eyes peering at him in the darkness. “It's the cat! It's the cat!” he cried. “Don't be silly,” said Nibbles. It was just a toy kitty.
As they make their way to the kitchen they encounter various scary objects, but no sign of the cat. You will have to finish the story to see if Squeak and Nibbles make it to the kitchen to get their prize, Cake. You will also have to finish the story to see if Ginger cat finds them.

I think I prefer the pictures in this book over the story. The story is fine. And the repetitiveness might involve the children more. And it's fun to see Squeak confuse many household items for the cat. But I just couldn't help watching their illustrated journey, complete with toy stuffed mouse in every picture. A happy ending with no one really getting hurt and Squeak not being so frightened of everything. It could work as a storytime, but I might bore myself with having to say some of those phrases over and over. It really wasn't that much, yet somehow it felt like a lot. Will consider book talking this one for the Sweet Treats K-5 storytime.

I think this book is great; however, there is a huge error!!! After they find the feather duster, the author says, "Just then, Nibbles spotted the chocolate cake on the table..." Then, if you turn the page before and after...the cake is on the refridgerator. Also, in the text on the following page it talks about how Nibbles and Squeak run down the "fridge."

I hate to be the "Debbie Downer" because I love this book; however, tonight in reading this book to my daughter she noticed the error. She is four.

I think this is a humorous book that draws the reader in until the end. I also enjoyed how the mouse was able to overcome his fear at the end of the story, which I think can be powerful for young readers. The repetitiveness and illustrations within this story are also key to the storyline and keep the readers interested.
Topics: fears, overcoming fears, sneaking out, favorite treats, getting in trouble, family life, worrying, feeling brave, peer pressure, temptations.

This is a very funny story about a little mouse named Squeak and his sister Nibbles going on an adventure to eat cake. Squeak, however, is scared of everything while his sister lives life on the edge... literally. I chose this book not only because I have read it a hundred times and can almost recite it word for word, but also because it teaches a great lesson. Fear will only hold you back in the end!

Love this story about a scaredy mouse. It has great repetition, makes you want to turn the page and the ending shows how Mouse overcomes his fears, therefore solving his own problem. It is a great page turner, very rhythmic. The suspense is brilliant. The illustratons of mouse are so cute. I laughed out loud at one of the descriptions. I can't believe I've only just read this one.

All my kids have loved this book and it is currently being enjoyed by my youngest aged 2. The pictures are cute and the text is lyrical and enjoyable to read aloud. For adults, this book is also fun to read (repeatedly) to your children as there are enough details in the illustrations to keep interest, the characters don't grate on your nerves and the story is quite charming.

Love the pictures, they're so cute. Poor baby squeak, terrified by cushions and scarves. He seems too small carrying about his little toy to be away from home since he's a stay-at-home mouse. The wording throughout is cute and the repetition makes it easy for kids to join in. Story is fine, but the illustrations are definitely the best part.

When I read this book for my preschool class, they seemed to enjoyed it and stayed engaged to the very end. Later in the day I heard one of the preschoolers trying tell his bigger sister the story. It was a bit altered but close enough to the original...Engaging adventure book!

GREAT children's book. My kids (seven and three) can't get enough of this book. It has great pace, rhythm and fun.

It's not great for falling asleep. We usually use it as the first, or second, of the three books before bedtime.

Very cute. Very sweet. Highly recommended.

Young listeners love this story of a fearful mouse with an active imagination. The pacing is suspenseful, and although the ending may be predictable for adults, it's edge-of-your-seat storytelling for the preschool set. A fun story circle read aloud.

Poor little scaredy mouse, everything looks like a cat and it all stands between the mouse hole and the chocolate cake. The big sister has an ingenious plan that succeeds beyond their wildest dreams and proves that together they can overcome a much bigger, scary enemy.

This was my favorite book in kindergarten. I still have my copy and occasionally read it when life is taking a trip on the struggle bus.

Squeak is a scaredy mouse. When his sister convinced him to venture out to the kitchen to grab some kick, he was scared they might run into a cat. As they sneak through the house, everything little think would set Squeak off:

"It's the cat! It's the cat!" he cried. Squeak ran this way and that, willy-nilly, round and back.

This was a cute and fun book. I think the repetition of the phrase referenced above would definitely make this a fun reading experience for kids (along with guessing some of the non-cat objects).

Part of a personal challenge to read all of my boyfriend's and his sister's childhood books before we donate and give them away.

Squeak, the littlest mouse is afraid of the orange cat. But there is cake in the kitchen. Squeak has a big brother that will help Squeak Not Get Lost. We will just tie this string around your waste & you can follow it back home. Well, there are many scary shadows on the way to the kitchen that look like a big cat. Finally, we make it to the cake and so does the cat. When the cat runs after the mice, there is lots of string on the floor. All's well that ends well. Sometimes you have to be brave. Enjoy.
