Edmondson is most famous for "The Ship That Sailed the Time Stream" but it is the weakest book I've read by him. I find it is so often the case that the most popular book of a given writer is the least impressive. People are for the most part stupid and unimaginative, craving mediocrity and by no means anything unique. This novel is much better than the aforementioned but not quite as strong as the forgotten "Blue Face" (aka "Chapayeca"), which is really a tiny masterpiece. Nevertheless it is cut from similar cloth, with memorable characters and a creative plot never going where I expected it to. ENJOYABLE.
A young first officer on a Mediterranean smuggling ship assists his brilliant, amoral captain when they both end up on the same starship during Earth's first interstellar war. Quite fun.
