This short introduction to Tintern Abbey is meant to be a companion while walking around the grounds of this spiritual place. I picked it up at a delightful bookstore - Urban Abbey in Omaha, NE - because I have always loved all things British and at the same time I am currently reading all that I can to prepare myself for a Camino pilgrimage. And so, while I don't anticipate including Tintern in my European spiritual journey next summer, reading about this place felt like a continuation of that exploration.
Esther de Waal writes in a delightful way that made me feel like I was experiencing the Abbey for myself, even sitting in my room in central Kansas. Her observations that connect architecture with spirituality, and functionality with community, make me want to experience and practice the Cistercian lifestyle myself. I already own one other book in this series of pilgrim guides, The Pilgrims' Way, and I intend to find others to explore many British Christian pilgrimage sites through these introductions.
