This is the kind of epic story I hope for when I read Gothic mysteries and romances. The strong, confident heroine and dark, brooding hero, an old antebellum mansion by the river, dark family secrets, steamy romance - this book has it all.
The story is set in 1980s South Carolina (specifically 1986) and revolves around the heroine as a medical student on leave who is sent to a sprawling river estate to take care of the severely ill lady of the manor. Who happens to have a smoking hot husband. And has a devoted housekeeper who hates the heroine's guts. And there are strange things going on in the house, which may or may not involve either magic or mental illness. All the trappings of Gothic romance and mystery are there, and the atmosphere is appropriately creepy and intense. The plot twists and turns like a soap opera (really, I'm amazed at how many plot threads are packed in, and how many end up resolved at the end) and the romance is definitely not neglected in favor of the suspense - there are several scenes of angst and longing between the heroine and the love interests. The villain of the piece is pretty obvious from the beginning, but I was interested enough to keep on reading to find out when and how the villain would get caught. The entire experience was great as Gothic romances go, and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a modern Gothic romance.
