Cats, cats, cats! I am the crazy cat lady! I loved this book and want a copy for my own bookshelf. So many things here to digest. I consider myself a cat enthusiast. I have volunteered with animal rescues for years. My husband and I have a little sanctuary ourselves. Not really, but it does feel like it. We both rescue cats.
This is very well done and I enjoyed it. Lots of information here for cat lovers alike and I highly recommend it. Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for a digital copy to review. A must for all cat lovers!
As other reviewers have mentioned, I still have questions about my cats' behavior that remain unanswered. That said, this is an interesting, informative book. Most of the book is composed of questions people have asked about their cats with a stock photo of a similar cat/behavior and a few paragraphs of answer. There are also facts about cats sprinkled in. This will tell you the basics about topics like litter box problems, safely taking your cat outside on a harness, spraying, kneading, playing, etc. Those of us with more unusual cats may never know why they do some of their baffling behaviors, but it's pretty comprehensive.
Thank you, Storey Publishing, for the advance reading copy.
As a catmom of 4 cats, I find this guidebook quite helpful. Most of the tips I was unaware about and I am so glad to know my cats more after reading this book!
The book explains well most of the behaviour displayed by cats and the certain habits/routine they have. I appreciate the real pictures and the humour in the writing.
I don't know about the first edition of the book but I am really glad to read this advance reading copy with amazing insights and details alongwith colourful pages and fun writing!
Despite having read various stuff on cats and despite inevitable repetitions, as well as the fact that a good deal of the information was something I already know, the book is still plain gorgeous. Why? Because of the cute drawings, of course! :) It's one of those things you feel thrilled just to hold in your hands: good paper, good font, amazing black&white drawings, interesting random facts about cats (really enjoyed those), a lot of useful information. I especially liked the instructions on cat training, cat character types and the cat IQ test (my kitty passed it with flying colours lol).
I thought I have read it and knew it all before but this book explained a lot of the things I did not understand: why my cat likes to eat from the floor instead of her bowl, why she dosn't care for some of her food until I put it right under her nose and practically into her mouth, why she seems uninterested in a toy close to her but gets all excited when it's moving from a distance.
There was even some esoteric advice, including calming your cat with flower essences, improving its behavour with harp music and guessing cat's character by the form of its snout. Guess what? Those seem to work! :)
The question and answer format is something I normally dislike but it was done quite well (and written with a sense of humour which I appreciate a lot).
Do you love cats? I am sure, like me, they remain a mystery to you! With two healthy Bengal kittens (Cleo and Leo aka "Ham and Cheese) I never pass up a chance to review a cat book. I am so glad I picked up the Cat Behavior Answer Book - I learned A LOT
Arden Moore has set the book up as a Q and A and addressed many questions that you may already think you know the answers to including, training feeding, nail clipping and litter boxes problems, but also includes many other issues you may not have answers for (cat proofing the house, deciphering the cat tail language, do cats dream, does my cat like me?
I really enjoyed the format, the pictures and the wide variety of answers that include different cat breeds as examples. If you are trying to communicate with your cat, thinking of adopting a kitten, or just want to ensure your pet has a super happy life, this book is for you! #ArdenMoore #TheCatBehaviorAnswerBook #Storey. #HomeandGarden
Funny little book all about cat "psychology". Mostly in Q&A format, I thought I'd take a look at it since I spied it on the library display shelf. Things I learned from this book: the wonders of double-sided tape for keeping the kitties off the counter, cats mark their territory with oils from their whiskers (that's why they rub up again you), and you can test your cat's IQ by seeing if it has object permanence (just like you would with a small child). Oh, and cats knead because it is calming and reminds them of how they used to stimulate milk production from their mothers ...
We are huge cat lovers and are always wanting to learn more about them and what makes them tick. I love the whole format of this book. It feels like the author is having a conversation with us about our feline friends. There are questions from cat lovers and then the author uses personal experience and some knowledge to help them out. I feel like I already better understand my cats after reading this book, and am closer to them because of it!
I recently saw a question on Twitter that asked “Would you rather know how speak every human language in the world or have the ability to talk to animals?” Well, "The Cat Behavior Answer Book: Understanding How Cats Think, Why They Do What They Do, and How to Strengthen Our Relationships with Them" won’t teach you how to talk to your feline companion(s), but it will help you understand him/her/them better!
In this revised 2nd edition, pet expert Arden Moore answers many of questions cat owners have, from why a sleeping cat suddenly gets the zoomies to grooming habits. I enjoyed the “Cat chat” section as I have a very talkative tabby who regularly lets us know when he isn’t getting enough attention. It’s more forceful than a meow, but not a yowl, which I have heard a few times in his 12+ years and it’s scary! He’s very much a purr machine and while purring is usually a sign of contentment, it can mean other things, so it’s nice to have this insight. I also enjoyed learning that cats will go out of their way to hide injuries or when they’re feeling bad in order not to appear weak. Because of this, Moore mentions a head to tail petting session daily just to see if the cat ever reacts differently to human touch. If they do, that’s your first clue something may be off.
Overall, this book gives a great overview about cat behavior. There is a lot of information conveniently organized so you can quickly find what you need, or enjoy looking at the cute cat photos and fun facts shared on the pages. There’s even a cat IQ quiz, which I haven’t given to my cat yet because I have the feeling he won’t do that well.
He’s pretty, though. :)
I’d like to thank NetGalley and Storey Publishing for providing me with a digital advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book is great for anyone who has cats, or is thinking about getting a cat. It is written in a Q & A style, which allows the reader to easily skip any parts that don't apply to them. It's broken down into a few chapters such as Communicating With Your Cat, The Basics of Chowing and Grooming, and Kitty Quirks and Funny Felines. In our household we've been considering getting an additional cat. Shortly before receiving a copy of this book we finally decided that our next cat would be black, as long as it had blue eyes. Then I read a question about cats reflective eyes at night, and learned that unlike the traditional green reflection, blue eyed cats reflect red instead. That made ever owning a blue eyed cat a hard no for me, lol. So. if you've ever wondered what your cat's tail is trying to tell you, how to help them achieve or maintain a healthy weight, or which litter is best ( we use two different kids, one in each box, after reading this and it's a game changer!) then I highly recommend this book for you!
Fun fact: a group of kittens is called a kindle, but a group of adult cats is called a clowder. This and other cat facts are presented in a Q & A style format by author Moore. Cat anatomy, behavior, communication, and breeds among other things are discussed in clear, concise language. Training tips and veterinary visits come up in nearly every scenario illustrated. There are even recommendations for naming and caring for our feline friends. Overall I consider this a five star read, especially if you are new to being a servant of and/or owned by a cat or five. My sincere thanks to Storey Publishing LLC via Netgalley.
I got this book to try to find answers to some of the puzzling things about my daughter's cat and I was not disappointed. I was very satisfied with the answer as to why some kitties are such a scaredy cats!
Not quite sure I like the question and answer format as I wonder how comprehensive they can be, but it would make a great gift book for a new cat owner . The photos are brightly coloured and gorgeous too!
The author is highly qualified to talk about taking care of cats, having written more than two dozen pet books, some of them award-winning. She's also recognized as America’s Pet Health and Safety Coach, teaching the latest veterinarian-approved pet first aid/CPR and safety classes. and served as a pet expert on numerous television and online video segments,
What a fun and informative read! I really liked this book! The information was easy to understand and Arden Moore certainly seems to know what she's talking about. It is clear that a lot of research went into this. Every possible question I could think of regarding my cats was answered. Topics range from why cats exhibit certain behaviors to what things are unsafe for your cat. It was done in a question and answer format, which made it more relatable. I really learned a lot from this book. It was easy to read in small portions and I'd consider it a "coffee table read". I plan on purchasing this, as well as its companion, the Dog Behavior and Answer Book 2nd Edition.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review an advanced reader's copy of this book. Domestic cat behavior and care are covered in question/answer format. As a seasoned cat owner, I find this book covers a lot of fairly common-knowledge information about cats in broad strokes with little new information. I still have questions about my cat's behavior that remain unanswered. This would be a good choice for a new cat owner, or as a coffee table book in a cat cafe.
What's not to love? This book was cute, lots of useful information, cute pictures and loved the way it was all laid out. This would be a keeper for the shelf, specially if a new cat owner (like myself)
I found this book rather educational, although it didn't answer all of my questions as to whether Minerva is abnormal, acting out, or just being a cat when she does the things that drive me nuts.
Sometimes books like these ignore more pragmatic advice, but this book delves into some of the more problematic issues. I liked how the author dealt with some issues, but she missed the point on other issues.
Really interesting book for anyone that owns a cat or is looking to get one! I liked the layout of the book with the pop up facts, but I would have liked to have had a section of what to expect from a cat’s behaviors when you first bring them home!
Firstly I want to start by thanking Netgalley, Arden Moore and Storey Publishing for giving me access to an ARC to review. As always my reviews are honest, fair and left voluntarily.
First it is confession time, I am a self-proclaimed cat lady. I grew up around cats, I had my first pet cat, although helped very much so by my mom, when I was around eight years old. I have had a cat in my life ever since. As such I love cat facts, books about cats, cat anything so when I saw there was an updated edition of this book coming out I was excited. I have to say I am not disappointed.
I will say some of the facts in this book may already be known by the avid cat fancier but as a reference book it is a perfect introduction for those delving into the wonderful world of cats. Even I found out some new facts I will be springing on anyone who gives me a chance to – proof that one you never stop learning and two this book is a brilliant reference to have. It is also perfect for new cat owners with hints, tips and explanations on how your cat may be behaving, why and what you can do to make your bond even stronger and your kitty even happier. I enjoyed the little anecdotes and writing style.
It's true that some information found within this book could be gleaned from other sources, cat magazines, online forums and websites but I still believe this book is a brilliant piece of reference plus it’s all in one place, easy to access and personally I like to have a few good books on subjects than having to search online or numerous other sources. Even for a seasoned cat lover or owner I think you will find something in this book, I know I did.
Covering a range of topics including grooming, playtime, relaxing, traveling and administering medication to your cat as well as much more there may be something there you didn’t think of before. Of course each cat is different just like each person is but there are definitely some great starting points in this book for everyone no matter your level of cat knowledge or experience with felines. It is clear Arden is passionate about cats and is an experienced cat owner and I for one am grateful they have chosen to share some of their knowledge with us.
The only thing I think was a bit odd were some of the pictures didn’t seem to line up to what was being discussed, well not all the time. But they were pictures of cats so I can’t really complain! This is definitely a book I would and will be recommending to new cat owners, cat lovers and even those who already have had cats for a long time. I am sure they will potentially find out something they didn’t know or give them a different view on their feline friends. I will definitely be getting a physical copy when it is released.
The Cat Behavior Answer Book, 2nd Edition Understanding How Cats Think, Why They Do What They Do, and How to Strengthen Our Relationships with Them by Arden Moore is currently scheduled for release on September 27 2022.

Do cats dream? What's the purpose of a cat's whiskers? How do I catproof my house? Why does my elderly cat howl at night? How can I train my cats not to jump upon the kitchen counter? Can I keep my cat from climbing the curtains? What's the best way to train a kitten to use the litter box? How can I eliminate the smell of cat urine? What's the best way to trim a cat's nails? Is it okay for my cat to eat grass? Arden Moore provides insightful answers to all these questions and many more, along with reassuring guidance on addressing the problems that can get in the way of living happily with a cat. The 2nd edition has been completely updated to reflect the most recent research and recommendations and redesigned in a larger, more browsable format.
The Cat Behavior Answer Book offers readers exactly what the title promises. I think this could be a valuable resources for first time cat parents, and for those facing new questions or challenges. I liked the facts about the history and physiology of cats, while some of it was familiar I did learn a few new things. I thought the book covered a wide range of topics, and was a very informative and interesting read. It covered a lot of ground and will be accessible to a wide range of readers. I think anyone looking to better understand cats, either to answer questions they have about particular cats or from basic curiosity will get a great deal from this book. I really like that there are additional resources included at the end of the book. I think it would be a great addition to public and school libraries as well as personal collections.
I have read some books by Arden Moore before so I was glad Storey Publishing (via NetGalley) fulfilled my request for reading this one. Thank you! My review will be the honest one.
This edition is the second - I didn't read the first one, so I can't compare them. I liked the look of the book, photographs and the pictures were gorgeous and completely appropriate for the subject matter. You surely won't regret buying this book as a gift for any cat lover.
However, this is not a book to buy for first-time pet owners, as it is not really a manual. You will get some tips, but not all one needs to learn about cats and keeping them (if you are into manuals of course). I sort of interpreted this book as a collection of additional Q&A one often asks oneself after getting acquainted more with their pets. These may be seen in monthly cat magazines, but here they are all put in one book. Well, most of them - calamities we can have with cats are infinite, and some questions are hopelessly unanswerable. Keep in mind though that there aren't health-related Q&A, which I think is reasonable, as in these matters one should always consult a vet.
At the same time, that is the main trouble with this book. It is not essential. One doesn't really need it, especially with so many cat magazines and online pet forums. It helps to have so many Q&A sorted sensibly in one book, but there is nothing particularly new to an already well-informed cat person.
If you are looking for a cat keeping manual, this is not that kind of the book. If you like cat related books, you won't regret buying this one, for yourselves or for other feline aficionados.
This book was fantastic and dare I say, a must have for all the cat parents out there and I wish I'd had it when I adopted my first kitty, so many questions answered in one book, its fantastic.
I loved the question and answer aspect that led to new chapters or sections within a chapter, its a great way to keep the reader interested. The pictures arr adorable and were nice break moments to process what had been read. Any book that gives me good advice and cute content is a win for me.
From counter jumping to bag chomping to not coming to say goodbye when I leave, over the years my fur babies have done it all, the explanations and reasoning behind these cat behaviors are well thought out and give insight into the feline world. I'm so glad that this book shed light on some of these behaviors and let me know all kitties have their quirks and we just have to protect them and keep them happy and healthy.
Mostly I will say that I loved this book because when I saw things I may have been doing wrong (talking about nail clipping here) this wasn't written in a way that made me feel like I'd scarred my kitty for life or that I was unworthy because I'd done it incorrectly.
Thank you Arden Moore for this brilliantly insightful look into the feline life and for providing information I know I'll be using in the future, like today, definitely starting a few small changes today, my cats thank you as well.
