Original Review Posted at Rabid Reads: http://www.rabidreads.com/2011/06/arc-review-forbidden-blood-by-felicity.html

Hopeless romantics will love Felicity Heaton's new book, Forbidden Blood. The story is fast-paced and imaginative, her writing flows ever so smoothly but it's the tale of impossible love that really seals the deal. It's sappy and improbable yet I couldn't help but eat it up. I am a girl after all and when I'm not reading novels full of wolfish gore; I love a good love story just as much as anyone.

Heaton manages to put a new spin on the tired vampire genre. I really enjoyed the caste system in this undead society. The different bloodlines with varying power levels and abilities gave this book a more wholesome feel. I also liked that the vamps can actually sire their offspring. Meaning, these fanged families are related by more than just their shared paleness. The terms mother/father, brother/sister are literal not figurative. As a result, I felt a stronger connection between the families. The consequences of a betrayal also became more pronounced because of this detail. A new breed of vamp is introduced in this series: The Venators. I wish their origins and purpose would have been covered more in-depthly (maybe in future installments?) but I liked the overall concept and the tidbits that were included.

Kearn is an interesting character. I disliked him at first but he slowly grew on me and by the end I adored him. His situation is heart-wrenching. This Venator gets dealt one crappy hand after another. It's a wonder that he's able to get out of bed most days and that he still believes in doing the right thing. Amber was just the medicine Kearn needed and I'm so happy that they found each other. She's strong when she needs to be yet incredibly soft and understanding when it comes to her savior. These two love birds are like night and day but for them it works perfectly.

This book is action-packed and the plot is well-developed but the overall story does revolve around the blooming love between Kearn and Amber. So if you're not a fan of paranormal romance you may want to steer clear of this book because it is packed with over the top romantic mush. However, if you like a little (okay a lot) of mind blowing sex scenes in your fictional cocktail, then Forbidden Blood is for you. A beautifully written debut to Felicity Heaton's new series.

I cannot lie.
I struggled with this book. For majority of the story this was me...
Photobucket

Just when you think life is about to be breathed into this story it misses it's mark considerably. And the writing style? When the author switches scenes is very confusing. You're reading a sentence and then with the very next line, you're in a different scene. That irks me to no end when I am reading a story & it happens several times in this book. So that knocks me out of the flow of this story as well.

Also the main characters spend way too much time in their own heads and not enough talkin and interacting with each other. Even though they are in the same room together. So this causes things to be quite repetitive as well. I want to feel and see a connection. Not always be told it's there and why.

And if I had to read about how much he wanted her blood one more time I was going to scream! I get it.. Your a vamp and her blood is the most enticing you've ever smelled in all your 300 odd years of existence. I get it. MOVE. THE. FREAK. ON! Bite her and get it over with!

It's a shame cos the guy Kearn, is really really HAWT. Though his relationship with the heroine is luke warm at best. He would be so much hotter in a different story.

The plot has promise, but you soon realize who the villian is even though it seems to take forever to get you there. And the face off is very anti-climactic.

From a techinical stand point the writing is choppy and as I said earlier way too repetitive. And there are also some things not consistent with the story. Like one that bothers me.. if your tongue holds healing properties that closes a bite, why then is her neck or hand still bleeding hours or the next day after you've "healed" it? Thus causing you to continue to be even more tempted to drink her blood. Can you say Contrived with a lame angle?? Me too.

But mainly my dislike for this one is there was just nothing on the page that truly captivated me. This book honestly wanted to be a great story though. The execution of it just left me wanting.

This is one of those stories where you are either going to love it... or not.

I could hardly finish this one. This is one of those that repeats the "inner turmoil" dialog every few paragraphs. As if you've forgotten since the page before. I got so tired of the repetition I ended up skipping more pages than I actually read. Authors need to understand that readers don't forget what they just read a page earlier, and that the repetition diminishes the impact of the point being repeated. Also, most of the book was written with the characters speculating on what the other is thinking, or "what if", or "what might" happen instead of actually moving the story along with what IS happening. This could have been a pretty good short story without all the filler, but an epic fail as a full length book.

(4.75 star review that received TOP PICK from NIGHT OWL REVIEWS)
PLOT:
Forbidden Blood is a gripping, dark and sexy ride!
From the first sentence to the last I felt so intertwined with the characters and the story that I had to read it in one sitting - unable to break away. The entire story took me through every emotion there is and I loved it. Betrayal and revenge tainted the very bonds holding together the society of Vampire Nobles and the lesser Nobles. Humans nothing more than pests to their upper breeding. That is, until one very human Source Blood female steals the heart of her Noble Venator. His tale is heart wrenching at best and will take your breathe away with the power a forbidden love does to heal the wounds he's sustained from his own kin. The author has brought together two unlikely people, one human with forbidden blood coursing through her veins and a Venator vampire burdened with the task of killing those of his kind that sample her blood type. You couldn't pick any two people more wrong for each other than Kearn and Amber, yet the author is great at breaking the rules, making you want what isn't suppose to be! By the end of the book, every aspect of the story comes full circle with a battle that left me with a tear in my eye and a glimmer of hope for love being eternal no matter where it leads. And I can only hope the tortured soul that is unmasked will be redeemed in a future installment. Thought you would get a clue as to who the bad guy is didn't you!
The author did a great job wrapping up all the loose ends with a hint of who might be the main character in her next Venator installment. I can't wait!

SETTING:
Forbidden Blood takes place in modern day London where you will get a taste of what it is like to live behind the walls of palatial vampire estates and see the inner workings of their society. The sense of old world society at its finest!

WRITING:
Ever the talented author, Felicity Heaton has maintained her books as Must-Reads and always at the top of my reading list. Her fluidity with words reals me in and her insight into her characters satisfies my thirst for a good story to fall in love with. And her attention to detail is what delivers the richness to all her stories. I must also add that her ability to deliver well formatted and grammatically correct works never fails.

CHARACTERS:
Kearn is a tortured man, an outcast from vampire society, dealt a life of loneliness void of any love and happiness. Amber is a human, nothing more than a source of temptation and food for vampires. Because of her blood she is thrust into a world that tests her ability to have strength beyond those that are considered her superior in every way.
From the beginning of the book Kearn's torturous life is shown through the hurtful actions of his kind. I couldn't help but feel the dullness filling his heart, as if every emotion had been drained from his soul. At first there is only the pain of rejection from his Noble family and the society he grew up in. As the story progressed and Amber slowly opens Kearn's heart, you are treated to the rush of life and love flooding into his life. I found her strength to be the backbone of the book which tied everything together by the end. Amber might be considered the weakest of creatures, but to me she was the strongest of them all!

LAST THOUGHTS:
Felicity Heaton has created a story paranormal romance that will spellbind your heart and imagination with the power of betrayal, revenge, love and possible forgiveness. In fact, I find this story worthy of re-reading! Forbidden Blood is that good!

TEASER:
"Amber..." His look changed, softening instantly, and the darkness left his eyes. "The only reason we can be here is because of you...because you are...Amber, you are beyond merely beautiful and outshine the radiance of the night. You are as entrancing as the moon and as stunning as the million stars that glitter around her. You are breathtaking to behold, and I am honoured to be in attendance with you tonight." ~ Venator Kearn

Ms. Heaton did a spectacular job with this launch. Everything worked. The romance was smoking hot. Kearn (Hero) and Amber (Heroine) were very well matched. Amber did a couple of dumb things but she is not 'too stupid to live' by any means. Kearn has everything! Sexy, rich, powerful, emotionally vunderable, and mysterious.

The vamp mythology was well done. Ms. Heaton gave us a new spin on the origins of the vamps as well as a complex society. The story focus is Kearn and Amber so we see nothing beyond their experience. This was good for the mystery but limited the range of the story. I wanted to get inside the head of a few of the characters.

There is plenty of room for this series to grow. This installment had no cliffhanger which was sweet. The vampire society was fleshed out well so there is a clear understanding of the rules. The 'Source Blood' concept is not new in that we have seen it in The Midnight Breed and somewhat with the Black Dagger Brothers. The difference for me is the mystery of who has it and how many people actually exist with it. It seems rare based on this installment. I could not find anything that marred the perfection of this love story -- 5 solid stars.

"Your belief in me...it will not save you. I am a slave to my instincts...you make me a beast and I cannot fight it. I want you."

~Kearn Savernake

I can't seem to stop smiling. Forbidden Blood is one of those rare books that not only draws the reader in immediately, but also manages to keep you there, loving every minute of it. This is a lengthy novel but never slowed down, never grew stale. Even when I figured out the "villian", I remained very invested in the story right up to the very end.

description

Kearn Savernake. A 360 year old Noble, an outcast, a Venator for the Sovereignty. A role he never wanted, never asked for, was never meant to be his. Hated by his own kind, feared by others, Kearn doesnt even recognize himself in the mirror. His once black hair, now silver, his blue eyes now a striking emerald green. At first glance his right arm bares a sleeve of ink but when his power engages, his arm glows blue. His appearance marks him, brands him as a Venator. He lives a cold, lonely life, driving the streets of London in his white Audi R8, hunting his own kind who have chosen a sinful, dark, forbidden path.

Read my full review at Paromantasy

This book is filled with romance, danger, action, and mystery that will will leave your heart pounding, your blood boiling, your head reeling and a shocker ending that will leave you gasping for more of the series.

Amber was leading a normal life under the radar never knowing that she possessed a trait that makes her very valuable to the vampires around her. She is a Source Blood, blood that gives incredible powers to vampires making them nearly invincible. Her life is turned upside down when a vampire thirsting for powers attacks her and makes her bend to his will until she is saved by a deliciously handsome Venator named Kearn, a protector of the innocent who banishes the evil vamps who hunt and kill humans. With the attacker getting away, she is thrust into the unknown world when she leaves with Kearn. Kearn is her savior and life support through this ordeal, but soon she realizes that it is Kearn who needs saving and she makes it her mission to do so.

Kearn has lived in exile from his family, his friends and the whole vampire community. Being a Venator, he is shunned by all and is accustomed to his lonely life, until he meet Amber. She is everything he is not, and everything he needs in his life, but that is all threatened when the killer blood-thirsty vampire sets his sights on Amber. The evil vamp is willing to do anything to get her and Kearn is willing to risk everything to save her. Will Kearn be able to save Amber, will Amber be able to let Kearn risk his life for her or will the killer take everything in his quest for power?

This book is filled with love, mystery, murder, betrayal, and action. It will keep you at the edge of your seat and begging for more.

A great book for any Paranormal Romance fan. I really enjoyed the characters and their development throughout FORBIDDEN BLOOD. I took to them right away and had no problems tapping into the emotions that they felt. Kearn starts off pretty cold with Amber and slowly thaws out to become a great protector and partner. I felt that Kearn and Amber's relationship progressed at a great rate and they complemented eachother really well. The sex scenes blend into the rest of the story perfectly and never seem out of place. I can honestly say that I didn't catch on to who the villain was until close to the reveal, Felicity did a great job of giving just enough clues and information. The pacing of the book as a whole was great and I never got bored or felt rushed. There was some great action and suspense scenes. There were many time throughout reading FORBIDDEN BLOOD that there was no way I was going to get up off the couch and put it down no matter how loud my kids screamed at me to get moving lol. I will definitely be following this series and cant wait to see what comes next.

What an awesome book. The author has done a great job putting these two characters together at just the right pace. Your not going to be bombarded by details in the first chapter. We learn more about the vampire world as the heroine learns. Making the world building easy to read.
Amber has a rare blood type that is a drug that's forbidden in the vampire world. She has everyone after her and Kearn is the only one that can protect her. In the beginning she is just bait to him. A way to find a forbidden drug user he's been chasing the past three years. But he slowly changes is feeling for her. Kearn is a lonely person after he becomes a Venator and his family disowned him centuries before until Amber walked into his life. This book flowed nicely and didn't have any boring parts in it.
I highly recommend this book to fans of paranormal and urban fantasy romance.

This was a fantastic e-read I bought. The excerpt sounded good and it was a great price so I thought I'd give it a read. I did not expect it to be so good though. I was wrong. This was an awesome read. Great characters, romance and a plot twist that completely caught me unaware. I hated to stop reading...I've been so busy this week and found myself thinking about the story line while I was not reading and when the next time would be when I could read some more. Between my husband and son it's impossible to read except at night. Sooo I was up until 1:00 overnight reading. This was so good...I hope it's a series but I don't think it is. Thanks Felicity!

This was, for me, not a great book. But in the authors defense, most of my loathing came form the sickly sweet and over the top romance. Something I realise all romance books are read for. IT was not a pleasure to read it and it has put me off reading anything romance for a while.

So much so I'm indulging in horror for a while. I need the stimulation after this bland affair.

If you love slushy romance you'll love it. If not AVOID!

Beautiful

This book was one that has a little action , mystery and most of all love. It is amazing what a Noble Vampire will do for love and Kearn being a Venator made it more precious to find it. Amber is this tender hearted woman that feel in love with a vampire. They had to face trials to get there. So you must read this to find out what happens. You will no regret it.

A Gripping Standalone Paranormal Romance With HEA Ending
You can read my full review on my WordPress blog, Flora's Musings...

I loved this book; there wasn't anything about it that niggled or didn't work for me.

I am already a fan of Ms Heaton's writing style and I enjoyed both the twists and turns in the thriller aspect of this tale as well as the romantic journey that our main couple, Kearn and Amber, went on throughout this gripping book.

Due to some of the more explicit sexual and violent scenes I understand that this book might not be suitable for everyone, but if you're not offended by content of this nature and enjoy relationship/romance stories with some gritty story-lines then I'd recommend Forbidden Blood to you.

Kearn is a Venator, a vampire who guards humans against those of his kind who desire Source Blood. Source Blood is very rare human blood type and acts like a drug if drunk by vampires. Whilst tracking down an elusive Source Blood abuser, he rescues a human woman from a vampire attack. Amber is a Source Blood and the perfect bait for Kearn to draw out his foe. But as they race to catch the vampire and survive the cruel games he plays, Amber is pulled deeper into Kearn's world. Can Kearn catch the elusive vampire before he gets to Amber? Can Amber heal the hurt hidden behind Kearn's tough emotionless exterior?

I would like to thank Felicity Heaton for her generous giveaway, which allowed me to get this book. Having read previous stories written by her, I knew I was in for a fantastic ride; I was not disappointed. I loved this story!
Kearn is vampire Venator, who has been given the task of saving humans from other vampires - sort of like a police officer. He is a very strong character. He has a great sense of responsibility to protect humans and track down those vampires who transgress the laws. When he meets Amber, we get to see a softer side to him. Amber is a human and is also a fantastic character; she's a very beautiful and feisty lady. I admire her courage to fight for what she wants. This story is told from both of their points of view, and gives the reader an insight into their thoughts and feelings. I was a bit apprehensive about reviewing this book before reading this story, as I knew that Felicity can write some steamy, explicit scenes. But as I read the story, and fell under the character's spell, my fears were laid to rest. Those scenes were beautifully and artistically written and fit with the overall feel of the book, which is a fantastic romance novel. If you love vampires like I do, you will love this book. I highly recommend this novel and look forward to reading more of the Vampire Venators series.

Honestly, Felicity Heaton isn’t the only author that I have been reading lately. Really! I just got swept up in her books, thanks to her generous freebies in the beginning of the month of April. Once I started one, I just had to pick up another. At first it was because of the quick novella reads, but then it was because of stories that she wove. Let’s just say that I am now an official Felicity Heaton fan.

As promised, Forbidden Blood was a dark, intense read. Kearn wasn’t just any vampire. He was a Venator, which really made him an enforcer of vampire law. To make things even more interesting, Amber wasn’t just a potential victim, her blood was like a drug to vampires. The very thing that Kearn was bound by law to make sure vampires stayed away from. Having Kearn be totally drawn to Amber for reasons beyond her blood – which he has tasted – gives you just a taste of the intensity of this story. Wow… that pretty much sums it up.

It wasn’t just the intense draw between these characters that kept the pages turning in Forbidden Heat. Amber was a victim and Kearn was broken. Perfect scenario for a paranormal romance. The twists, turns, betrayal, action and flipped alliances added to the draw of this book.

Even though that this book comes to a satisfactory end, it was great to find out that this is the first in an eventual series. The next book is un-named and I have no idea who the main characters will be, but the important aspect is that there will be more. From the end I can almost guess where the story may lead, but I’ll just have to wait and see. ;)

It took a bit for me to fall into this world, but once I did, I fell hard and I liked it. Kearn has been given a duty that should have been a blessing and instead, because of the circumstances that led to him being chosen over his brother, he hates it and has isolated himself from everything he used to hold dear. Since this duty comes with physical changes (hair and eye color that make him stand out from other vampires and a tattoo to help him channel his power), it's something he has to face every time he looks in a mirror. I felt for the poor guy. To hate this duty that he can't rid himself of AND be estranged from his family made what he's going through so tragic.

Amber, on the other hand, has it pretty easy. Well, except for that whole thing where her blood is highly prized and if the wrong people get their hands on her she'll suffer a world of pain and all sorts of other badness. Good thing Kearn stumbles over her when things aren't looking to good, huh? These two simmer for a bit before combusting. Just the way I like it.

Felicity Heaton has built an intriguing world with classes and levels of nobility. The nobles bend the rules when then can and humans are looked down on. Bloody, a little dark, and full of lots of twists and backstabbing... which are pretty much all the things I look for in a book about vampires.

This book was smokin' HOT! The storyline was great, a totally new look at vampires. They crave human blood but are not allowed (legally) to hunt them. Any blood from a human must be consensual. Some humans have a rare gene that makes their blood Source Blood - so powerful that if a highborn vampire used it, he would become godlike in power.

There is a special caste of vampires that hunt down and put down vampires who drink forbidden human blood. They are governed by a council of beings that depict who is to be hunted down and obliterated. Extra power is given to Venators to better deal with those that must be hunted down.

There is a bond made between human and vampire who takes their blood that makes them share feelings and emotion. The more blood taken from the human, the stronger the bond. If that bond is consensual it can be an amazing experience - add some wild sex to the mix and it's mind blowing! If it is not consensual, the bond can be used by the vampire to control the human.

Loved the sex scenes and really enjoyed the blood bond between the two main characters. Actually had me yearning for the same experience more than once! whew! *fans self* hot stuff :D I will definitely be buying more books written by this author.

I love paranormal romance books and, of course, “Forbidden Blood” by Felicity Heaton is not an exception! Both romance and adventure in this genre are the keys for a great read. When the characters are also great, then you have what you need in a book!

The story is about Amber and Kearn. Amber’s life change when she learns that her blood is special for vampires and the same time Kearn comes to her life. He wants to save her and keep her safe from the evil vampires but from himself too. The story takes place in London and I have to admit that is a nice change of scenery!

I really liked both of the characters in this book because they do their best under difficult situations. Kearn is a lonely man, tortured by his own beliefs, who lives a life without happiness. I love his sense of honor and his responsibility for what he has to do. Amber is a human but a very strong one. I’m saying that she’s strong because it’s not easy to be introduced to a new and horrifying world and not get crazy! So, I think that she’s dealing with the news very well from the beginning!

Very good and fast-paced story and I loved the writing style! I recommend this book to the fans of a good paranormal romance book!

"Stay with me forever"

Paranormal Romance Goddess! Kearn may have had his destiny chosen for him, although it was was road paved of duty resulting in loneliness and being shunned by everyone he held dear. It brought him to close himself from from showing his feelings for his need for love, acceptance is truly HEARTBREAKING. Until he lived in nothing but a cold emptiness shadow of a life where his bestowed duty became a curse. Until that same duty crossed his path with an innocent named Amber. Her blood turned out to be only be a portion of her true strength. Her ability to crack open Kearn and see under the front he hid behind the mask to the true man beneath. Amber's choice was to go back to her normal life or step into a new world... Their love story journey is harrowing with unbelievable revelations and twists that enthralled me to the very end. I'm a GREAT FAN of author Felicity Heaton! She's able to suck her readers into ALL of her artfully crafted stories. I would RECOMMEND Forbidden Blood to Everyone! Guaranteed she will make you a fan too!

I loved Forbidden Blood. Felicity Heaton writes a killer vampire romance!!!

This book was filled with twists & turns, suspense, secrets, lies and treachery.
This was countered by wonderful main characters, lots of romance, love & passion.

My heart ached for Kearn for most of the book - he had a tragic history, the things he had to endure throughout the book were awful & how he viewed himself was so sad!!
Amber was a great heroine - loving, accepting and understanding - just what Kearn needed!! - but she too had a terrible experience to live through.... I cried much more than I expected to while reading their story!!

So much happened in a short space of time for them - the action was non-stop and Felicity hit us with a few surprise twists which I was not expecting!!!

For me, this is Felicity at her best and I rate this book 5*....... but don't just take my word for it - grab a copy and see for yourself!!!!

Normally I like the books written by Felicity Heaton, but Forbidden Blood was just boring.
The beginning was kinda okay, the middle was only made up of sex scence and I couldn't care less about the ending.
Besides it was really obvious who the bad guy was .
And i won't even talk about the repetitions. I can remember what happened three pages ago, you don't have to repeat it for me!
I stopped reading at 87% and normally I would still want to know (even if the book is bad) if the H/h get a HEA, but with this book ...

I am a big fan and follower of Felicity Heaton’s. I realized I had not read this book. Once I started my journey with Kearn and Amber I could not stop reading. There were so many twists to their story. I was a nervous wreck! It is not your “usual” vampire story. There is romance, sexiness, betrayal, and past secrets that haunt Kearn but the plot took me by surprise. Amber is human and is “source” blood which is addicting and illegal to consume. Kearn’s duty as a Vanator enforcer is to keep Amber from being a supplier, by keeping her safe from the evil that wants to use her and from himself. This book kept me tense and on the edge of my seat and reminded me again why I find Felicity’s books compelling.

I loved the diversity of the vampires in this story. There are many layers to the vampire society, and even differences in the types of blood from humans. As the title suggests, Amber has forbidden blood, a type of blood that has some special qualities to it that act like both a drug and a power boost. Kearn is an exiled vampire, sort of like and enforcer, and one of the upper echelon of vampires who see humans as far beneath them. When the two meet, though, the attraction between them is more than blood deep. I have enjoyed many of Heaton's stories, and will continue to pick up her books in the future.

>Forbidden Blood -

>I am an independent reviewer. This is the first book in the Vampire Romance series and ends in an HEA. Kearn is a vampire who hunts rogue vampires. He saves Amber, a human, from a vampire attack and realizes she has powerful blood. They decide to work together to capture this elusive vampire attacker, using Amber as bait.

>Kearn falls in love with Amber, just as she attracts a lot of enemies and her blood attracts a lot of other vampires. There is a little illusion magic involved and a huge vampire battle before Kearn and Amber get their HEA. This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this story 5 stars.
