Thirty-two-year-old Lexi O’Malley, a boring software programmer by trade, was out of work, out of money, full of attitude, and looking for a new career. When her eccentric Aunt Scarlet calls and shames her into helping search for Bubba, her missing, big, dopey, black Lab, she figures she might as well add out of luck to the mix since dog detective wasn’t exactly the great new profession she had in mind.In the process of tending to her familial obligation, she finds Bubba beaten nearly to death and after Aunt Scarlet’s home is ransacked she accidentally learns her aunt’s handyman is not who he professes to be. While playing amateur sleuth, she’s shot at, pursued by thugs, crashes her car, finds her apartment burned to the ground, and discovers that even though she’s short on expertise and not all that brave, she’s a master fibber and can hold her own in a crisis.
When I was a kid I had lots of imaginary friends and we went on all kinds of crazy adventures. Sometimes I would confuse my playmates with my imaginary friends, causing the fabrication of visiting cousins from far far away, Never-Never-Land. This would result in interesting conversations at neighborhood gatherings during which my father would let loose with his boisterous laugh and then proceed to embellish these tales while my mother took on a horrified expression and my sister simply rolled her eyes.
Drawing from some of these childhood exploits, I began to write stories, but with a child to raise, bills to pay and business partners to satisfy, my writing was shoved to the back burner. Once life began to resemble something close to normal, I picked up my pen again--so to speak--and created Lexi O'Malley, finding writing a fun escape. Lexi's escapades are a bit more grown up and loaded with adventure, mystery, light romance and lots of humor.
D. M. (Donna Marie) Buckley was born and raised, and still lives in Tampa Florida with her husband and three cats, where she is currently hard at work on Carrefour, the next Lexi O'Malley adventure.
This was all over the place but I actually enjoyed it. Lexi is a mess, Aunt Scarlett is a force to be reckoned with, it’s amazing they’re not all dead, but it was a fun read
After reading two Suspense/Thriller books by Michael Connelly, back-to-back, I was looking for a fun light book to read this week-end.
My favorites are mysteries with humor and this book fit the bill. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. I love a good book, especially one that is so much fun. It was a book that held my interest from the first page with great characters and animals. I am an animal lover so I really like the parts about the animals.
I found it a delightful, hilarious, and a laugh-out-loud funny book. I suppose it wouldn't be a book for everyone, but it was just the kind of book I was in the mood for. I've never read a book by this author, D. M. Buckley, before, but would be willing to read her next book in this series, "TWOCAN SAM" the next action adventure by her that I think is coming out in early 2012.
Love, love, loved it! Can't remember the last time I read a book that made me laugh out loud. Fun, witty, real mystery. A must read by a very talented author! Cant't wait for the next in the series!
This book was the best laugh i have had in a very long time ! Hated for it to end! The sad thing is that i cant find anymore of her books, sighs. a must have book for chasing away the blues.
This book opened my eyes to reading again. I prefer listening to books. With that being said- this book was a gift and once I started reading it- I couldn’t put it down. I carried it everywhere I went. I seized every opportunity to read a little more, to get myself more acquainted with the characters. I hurried and got the second book as soon as this one was finished.
Would have been a much better book if not for the cursing. I would have given it a 3 1\2 star. I be reading any more from this author unless they clean it up.
: I thought this book sounded fun with the animals in it, I had just read a cat book so thought it was time for a Doggie book.
The main character is Lexie, along with her sometimes weird friends, family and the characters she meets along the way, as she weaves her way through the day just trying to live life.
The story opens with Lexie out of work, after having quit the zoo as a zoo keeper. This was an in between job while “looking” for a better one. She really loved the zoo job until it came to cleaning up Elephant poop and that was it. So now Lexie is out of work, bored and looking for trouble, which, of course she finds.
As the book progresses we meet Lexie’s eccentric family, her Aunt Scarlett, a fading beauty with a salty personality, who loves to rescue animals of all types from Bubba to Henrietta Chickenhead! She is demanding but loving to Lexie.
Houty-a handy man to “Miss Scarlett” who has been with her for five years. No information can be found about him on the “web” and so Darcie, Lexie’s, nutty friend for life, decides he is under cover mob or worse.
The author is a very good story teller, she weaves a good tale and I am sure the story would have played out well if I had finished it. I did not finish reading the book, because of the use of coarse language that did not really build the characters. It did not add to the story nor in anyway enhance the experience of the story.
The author is very talented and should go right on writing but realize that the language added nothing to these characters personalities or to the story, and it would still have been a fun story without it.
I give this book a three out of five stars but only because of the language. If language doesn’t get in your way, go for it, as the storytelling is great, the characters are full of life, and the story moves with energy.
If you are an animal lover you will especially enjoy Lexie and her trying to figure out what to do with the new kitten when she is called upon to care for her!
The story line is good fun and reminds me of a story teller that takes his story from the top of his head and weaves a magical tale to keep you enthralled.
Lexi O'Malley (our heroine) was out of work. Her Aunt Scarlet asked her to assist in finding her missing dog.
In the process of tending to her familial obligations, she finds the dog, her aunt's house gets ransacked, she gets pursued by thugs, she is shot at, her house has been fire bombed. In all the middle of all this chaos - she and her friends manage to keep a great sense of humor.
I picked up this book and didnt want to put it down until I finished. I very seldom find a book that has me laughing out loud. I really loved it and hopefully DM Buckley's next book will be a great.
Doggone by D.M. Buckley was a treat. Humor, mystery and delightful characters kept me reading. Look out Stephanie Plumb.
Lexi O’Malley is out of work and looking for a new career, so when her aunt calls about her missing dog, Lexi jumps right in. Yes, she finds the injured dog, but in the process she also finds puzzles, bad guys with guns, and even a little romance.
She also discovers that people aren’t always what they seem, and that can be a dangerous thing.
D.M. Buckley is a name to watch for, and I recommend Doggone to anyone who enjoys a mystery with some humor.
In my opinion this author was trying to copy Janet Evanowicj and her "One for the money" format but did it badly. Although fast paced and somewhat amusing there were too many things happening too fast and the story went on too long.
Light read. Ebook on iPad has formatting issues. Author's writing style was almost distracting at times. Reads like a first novel. Story ideas were good; hoping for improvements in style for the follow-up book.
