New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Kristin Miller writes sweet and sassy contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and paranormal romance of all varieties. Kristin has degrees in psychology, English, and education, and taught high school and middle school English before crossing over to a career in writing. She lives in Northern California with her alpha male husband and their two children. She loves chocolate way more than she should and the gym less. You can usually find her in the corner of a coffee shop, laptop in front of her and mocha in hand, using the guests around her as fuel for her next book.
Intervamption is a good start to a new paranormal romance series. I really like how the author brought the paranormal aspects into the romance. The romance between the hero and heroine was very believable and hot. There’s a different take on shifters and vampires this author brings to the paranormal table. Then there’s the mating is not only hot it’s dangerous, yep, a little different twist there too.
At first I didn’t think I would like this story because Dylan has three men pining over her. One is her best friend, the other is her true mate even though they are enemies and then there’s the one that is placed before by the Leader, but all the fuss over Dylan did last too long at least they had work to do to keep them occupied. Well, except for the best friend he might have had some real issues going for a bit *shaking head* poor guy.
Shade I loved, reason I am getting tired of the same paranormal hero going ape on their mate all the freaking time grrr. Shade didn’t fall into this, he is cool laid back even though he keeps an eye on Dylan he is not all up in her space when she needs to take care of issues. Dylan is very responsible with the work she does and she has a heart that will help anyone, even a stray enemy named Shade.
I enjoyed the world the author has set up it’s complex but easy to understand. There is a prophecy that all factors has to stop. Dylan and Shade didn’t even know they are the biggest part of the prophecy, so this comes a s bit of shock. You’ll have to read to see what roles they play and you might find some Indiana Jones action.
Whoever wrote the blurb on this book did it a real disservice. Not only does it fail to really tell you what the book is about, but it does not reflect the tone. It comes off as this quirky, kind of light, self-referential vampire book. But it's really a sexy paranormal romance with a creative twist on vampire and shifter world building.
Slade is a therian assassin. Or at least, he was, until he failed at a mission nearly a century ago. But suddenly, his leader drafts him back into service. He has to use his shapeshifting ability to pose as a vampire. He'll infiltrate his enemies' khiss to secure some ancient scrolls, then take out a mark who will be identified later.
Almost right away, his path crosses with Dylan. She has devoted her life to running a blood clinic for vampires fighting their bloodlust. She was chosen to help indoctrinate Slade into the khiss. And from the first moment, they were drawn together in a fiery attraction. Unfortunately, she is informed she must mate with another vampire... a man she doesn't love... a royal. But Slade is determined to find a way for her to avoid that fate. The two work together to find the scrolls, which might not only provide a way out for Dylan, but may even show the way to end the long war between their people.
There was alot going on beyond the main story, but the world building was clear and easy to follow; and I never had any trouble keeping the characters straight.
The romance was sexy... and reminded me a little of Underworld with the vampires & shifters at war, and prophesy and hybrids. OK, maybe not... that's where the similarities end. But this gives me an excellent excuse to let my thoughts drift to Scott Speedman.
..... He sure is pretty, isn't he? ......
Back to the book. It was good. There were some pretty good twists... and a surprise at the end. I'm happy to say that this is one Epilogue that features neither a token wedding sequence or a baby. The author also builds in a solid set-up for a sequel featuring Dylan's friend, Ruan. And I'm looking forward to it. A little more than 4 stars.
There is a much better synopsis of this book on the authors website.
Slade is a therian (shifter) assassin. His new assignment is to infiltrate the local vampire haven posed as a vampire. His job is to find the catacombs that house the hidden scrolls that tell the historical secrets and prophecies of the vampire race. He is also supposed to kill one of the individuals mentioned in the prophecies. He knows upfront he will not find out who his target is until he is seated well in their haven. Dylan is a vampire. She runs ReVamp, a blood center for vampires. Willing humans come in and donate. She then distributes it to vampires so they do not have to urge to go seek out a meal on their own (biting humans.) Her job is getting more difficult though. There is something wrong with her blood supply. Her customers have to feed more often, and they are not getting sufficient nourishment from their feedings. I liked Slade. He is hard, not too emotional. As he sees it he really doesn’t have anything to live for. The part of his past that he remembers, he sees as the biggest mistake of his life. After a failed assassination he accepts a job that will get him his title as assassin back, even though the job itself is a suicide mission. Dylan is a very compassionate woman. She wants her fellow vampires to not be seen as the evil blood sucking leeches that they have been portrayed as. Her time is spent mostly at ReVamp, when not there she is teaching new vampires, counseling vampires, and mentoring vampires. She is very passionate in her work to make her race thrive. I liked the pace at which she and Slade’s relationship progressed. The sexual tension between the couple is pretty intense. They have an attraction that neither wants due to their genetic differences, but it is an attraction that they don’t want to fight either. I love prophecies. I enjoy seeing just how skewed ancient texts are and how easily they be misinterpreted is always a thought-provoking read. There is also the excitement of the characters trying to prevent the prophecy from ever being fulfilled. Add in an ancient all-knowing person who speaks a truth in riddles and you have a great read. I like a complex world with several different evils to add chaos the plot. This book has that in spades. It seems everyone has their own agenda to benefit themselves in the end. The evils are not caring about whose toes they are stepping on along the way. If more people die than necessary, that’s just a justifiable sacrifice for the end result. I enjoyed the remarkable cast of characters. There were so many mischievous plans to better a race, that some characters I thought were evil were in fact good and vice a versa. There is plenty of action that keeps the pages turning. I also liked how each chapter started with little factoids from various reading materials of this world. It would be a small snip it from a newspaper, a handbook, or a newsletter. It was a nice little piece of information that the characters had in their lives. The readers are introduced to the characters for the second book in the series, which the author’s website states will be out in the Fall of 2011.
First Sentences: "Slade didn't think twice about slamming the blonde against his closed apartment door. She gasped as her head snapped back, hitting the wood with a resounding thud." WOW! Talk about an opening! Loads of tension and it definitely grabs you from the start.
Brownie Points: One of my favorite things about Intervamption is the attention to detail when it comes to world building. The supernatural world Kristin Miller creates is both believable and imaginative at the same time. From the descriptions of prophesies and ancient Valcdana ceremonies to Dylan's blood blast bars, I was hooked on the unique world Kristin portrayed.
Beefs: I don't even know if this could be considered a "beef" lol, probably not. Intervamption is extremely plot driven. It's well-paced, filled with tension and unexpected twists. My usual preference is more character driven novels. Nevertheless, Intervamption took a writing technique I'm normally not a fan of, and made me love it. That's an accomplishment!
Ending: Thoroughly enjoyed it. I won't say too much, because I don't want to give anything away. But let's just say, I'll definitely looking forward to reading the upcoming books in the series.
Recommendation and General Comments: Intervamption is a fantastic read! Paranormal romance lovers will not be able to put it down. You will fall in love with the Intervamption world and the sizzling romance between heroine vampire, Dylan, and the sexy therian hero, Slade. It's a story of star crossed lovers at it's most badass.
I highly recommend this book! If you're a fan of paranormal romance, then you should go pick this up as soon as you can. This is no run of the mill vampire romance--this book is one of the most unique spins on vampire lore I've seen yet, and I do love my vampire novels, so that's saying something. I guarantee you'll love it.
Would I aspire to write like this author? Absolutely. Intervamption is well-written, well-paced, intriguing, full of tension, unique and sexy as hell. The better question is: why wouldn't I aspire to write like this?
This assignment was to be the one to bring back his high standing assassin status. As crazy as it was he was to shift into a vampires’ form and infiltrate their khiss and remove the target, whom will be determined once he was in.
This should have been an easy in and out experience for a great assassin as him self. But what he didn’t count on was the sexy , breathtaking vampire Dylan. Now because of her every thing has been turned upside down for him and for the first time ever he feels more at home by her side in this blood sucker form than ever in any other form. He has to have her and keep her but first he must find away to save her form her arrange marriage.
Dylan was always content to help her fellow khissmates and give the khiss all she had and never take for her self so when she is told she must marry Erock she thought was willing to do her duty but maybe she couldn’t do it at the risk of never seeing Slade ever again.
Now she is being charged with the fault of the contaminated blood supply her facility provides for the khiss, Dylan must find a way to prove her innocence and help her people. With the help of Slade she can do anything.
I loved this one. InterVamption was a fun and twisted ride. The world of vampires and therians (shifters) is a new and exiting one. Kristin shows us the war that has been ongoing between the vampires and the therian for centuries but then she introduces a new war that has exploded full force in this book. There is action all the way though I had a hard time putting it down. I was sucked in almost immediately. The heat and passion flows strong between Slade and Dylan. I feel in love with Slade right away he was sassy, strong willed and sexy. His humor and quick comments are great and kept me amused the whole book. I liked Dylan she was a no nonsense woman and she was determined to do what she thought she need to save her people. I couldn’t read the preview for the next book it would only drive me crazy waiting for it. But even with out it I’m super exited to read more about this fascinating world. **Athenna**
Man, this book was HOT, and a great introduction to a world that I'm excited to see more of. The characters grabbed me from the very start, and it was a compelling, easy read. I will say that I wanted to see a lot more of the world they live in... but you know what, I think she might have another book coming out soon that will help me out with that! Can't wait!
DNF at 38%, 259 pages in. Smutty, vampire/shapeshifter struggle, lots of puffed-up-chest male egos, three guys pining over the same girl. Not my favorite vampire interpretation; “vampires are born not made” kind of thing but that’s just a personal preference. Mostly disappointed that I got 259p in but it was still the same exact day (maybe two) in the story, a super drawn out day.
I do appreciate the pop-culture and modern technology references (though a little dated since this came out in 2011). Didn’t keep me hooked, didn’t hate it.
"A therian-vampire mating? No way. Talk about blasphemy..."
His job was to kill his mark. As a Therian shape-shifting Assassin, Slade took his job of killing vampires seriously, until an incident forced him underground. Nevertheless, all that changed the day he was propositioned for an undercover mission no Therian has ever done before. Infiltrate the enemy camp with one of the vampire’s own as the informant and await further instruction. The reward would be the return of his revered status. However, the deeper he gets into the vampire world, the more he begins to understand them. With a beautifully, intelligent vampire as his guide through vampire culture, he also begins to desire someone he can never have. Unfortunately, a war is brewing and a side must be chosen, but the adventure has only just begun as enemies working together begin an ultimate double-cross game.
Dylan has poured her heart and soul into ReVamp, which helps struggling vamps with their urges and is responsible for the blood work of the khiss. It’s a haven of sorts and making it the success it was meant to be has become her sole purpose in life, but a mysterious suicide and a tainting in the blood supply has shifted her focus. Unanticipated complications begin to arise and the finger of blame is held firmly in Dylan’s direction. Now it is up to her to find answers or ReVamp will be shutdown and she will be shutout of the khiss. Yet in the same night, she is set to give her report findings she finds herself inexplicably drawn to a newborn set for khiss induction. And if that personal life complication wasn’t enough, Dylan has been chosen to perform the sacred, but sometimes deadly Valcdana rite with a mate not of her choosing. Dylan has a week to find out what’s tainting the blood or risk being thrown out of the khiss, solve the mystery of the connection between her and the newborn, and prepare to be enlightened by an overbearing vampire for all eternity. Could things get any worse?
The reader enters the story with some heated action already in progress. My attention was immediately captured and kept by the mysteries, the drama, the sexual tension, and the characters throughout the entire story. There was never a moment of boredom as character POV’s are consistently switched to give the reader just enough insight into all of the major players without giving away the story and making it completely predictable. If anything, there were moments where the story seemed to jump a bit too far from one chapter to the next without giving enough of juicy details. Plenty of detailing though on the characters and scene experiences. The world building feels like it’s still being fleshed-out since much of it is left up to character destiny’s that have yet to be fulfilled. I anticipate the next in the series to continue that build-up.
I would fully recommend this story to readers craving another hit of paranormal romance with vampires and shape-shifter’s unlike any you may have read before. These vamps come with some fairly archaic traditions and behaviors as much as they might be technologically advanced. The shape-shifter’s known as Therian’s are definitely not your basic one trick shifter. They shift into anything they’ve either seen or heard before, even a vampire, but even they have their limits. It’s a powerful combination of strengths and weaknesses with dominating hierarchies already in place. All of this and there are a few deliciously steamy sex scenes to look forward to as well.
Don’t miss out on this fantastic new series debut!
Slade is a therian and has been called into service by his master,or Sheik, when there is news of a vampire uprising. His Sheik,Moses, promises to restore him to Assassin status if he helps. Moses wants Slade to shift into a vampire, which is nearly impossible to do,and Slade is to infiltrate a khiss of vampires, and take down a high ranking mark.
Dylan owns ReVamp, which helps vampires blend in with humans and control their urges,as well as offering a safe haven. For centuries, the Court has been trying to find out what has been tainting their blood supply, and weakening the wills of vampires across the area. Bloodlusting street crimes were climbing,in spite of the efforts of ReVamp. ReVamp’s blood banks have been open for more than 50 years, but lately they’ve been noticing problems among their patrons, and it’s Dylan’s job to find out what’s going on. The possibility of bloodthirsty vamps hitting the streets and causing mass panic is becoming very real,as well as vamps being rounded up,tortured, and executed by the therians.
Dylan gets a visit from a vampire that is set to be enlightened, which is the vampires equivalent of marriage. He is in love with another, however, and makes Dylan promise to protect his lover if he should die. He then proceeds to walk out the door, into the sun. She turns to her bodyguard,Ruan, for help in tracking down Eve,the dead vamp’s lover,so that she can deliver his final message. Unfortunately,Dylan’s got other issues on her hands. She’s late to help induct a newborn vampire into a khiss, and little does she know, this “newborn” is none other than Slade, the undercover therian sent to infiltrate the vamps. There’s an instant connection, and in spite of her age,and centuries of self control,Dylan is unable to find the undeniable heat between them. When Slade realizes that Dylan is a vampire, sparks fly,and not in a good way. The rejection hurts Dylan more than it should, and she resolves to get back to business immediately. Easier said than done, though!
Slade is very alpha male, and I really liked that about him. He finds himself feeling very protective of Dylan, regardless of the fact that she’s a vamp. Slade’s feelings about vamps in general are also undergoing a bit of a transformation. Being in their midst makes him realize that they might all not be the vicious animals that he’s always thought them to be. Needless to say,for a therian and Assassin, this isn’t a good thing, since it challenges everything that Slade has been made to believe. Dylan is a strong, smart woman, and more than able to hold her own alongside Slade. However, she’s fighting a battle between what her heart desires, and what her khiss, and her life’s work is demanding of her. A war between the vampires and the therians is brewing, but secrets will come out that will threaten all that Dylan and Slade have been taught about their races. The action is fierce, the vamps are hot,and you won’t want to miss this unique debut!
Favorite Line: “And her scent…that drive-him-mad fragrance…made him want to kneel at her feet and beg forgiveness for wasting himself on every other woman he’d ever had.” (p. 119, egalley)
The cover does not do this book justice. I absolutely hate the cover. There is nothing enticing about it, unlike its great title. I loved telling people what I was reading because it is such a cute play on words.
When I read the blurb on the back of the Kristin Miller‘s book, I thought I was getting a light-hearted romance about vampires. I’m pleased to say that is not what I got. Intervamption is a book about survival. The characters and races introduced are all doing what they feel is necessary to survive.
Dylan is the vampire in control of the blood banks which feed the vampire population. She is trying to find a contaminate in the blood which is making vampires weak. While at work a male vampire enters and denounces an arranged marriage before committing suicide. Dylan looks into the dead vampire’s claims and is sucked into a conspiracy which may end in her death.
Enter Dylan’s soon to be love interest Slade. Slade is a therian (shape shifter) and a former assassin. He failed an assignment in the past and lost his highly revered position. Almost a hundred years later, wanting redemption, Slade agrees to take on a new assignment. He is to shift into the body of a vampire, infiltrate a vampire khiss (nest) and perform some action which will be disclosed at a later date. It’s a dangerous mission because the vampire’s body is incompatible with the therian’s body. Basically it’s a suicide mission.
For Dylan and Slade it’s lust at first sight and it’s really unfortunate seeing as how Slade is a spy and Dylan is all about doing the right thing. But the two star crossed lovers will be together; it has been prophesied.
Okay, don’t freak on me, but I like all of the characters in Intervamption even the bad guys. The evil ones were well-rounded and well…evil. And Miller gives just enough information about the secondary characters to make me want more. I want to see where she’s taking this series. I already know two will become one and give birth to a great ruler. Getting to that point is what I want to watch. It’s kinda like watching a good tv series, but I’m hoping it has a clear end. Not a 20 book end, but a three or four book series end.
Intervamption is a vampire romance with a serious tone. While some aspects of the story are predictable, Miller surprised and hooked me with the character driven story. It’s the first book in Miller’s Vampires of Crimson Bay series and the next book is due to be released Dec. 6, 2011. Scooper Speaks
Amongst the popular genre of paranormal romance author's need to be creative and offer an original myth to pique the readers interest. Miller has created an alternate society where Therians (shifters) and vampires battle under a the unseeing gaze of the mundanes. In Crimson Bay, war is brewing as the promise of a prophecy draws near. Slade, a Therian assassin, has been tasked to infiltrate a local khiss and await orders. His boss has a plan to rid Crimson Bay of the vampires once and for all. Slade shifts into vampire form and is welcomes into the khiss as a newborn by Dylan. His immediate and passionate attraction to her is confusing for him, as are his sudden cravings and increase in strength and speed. While determined to complete his mission, spending time with Dylan breaks down the stereotypes he has always held of vampires and he finds himself torn between duty and destiny. Dylan cares little for the politics of war, but as the owner of ReVamp, a support system for new and troubled vampires, she is concerned that her race is buckling under increased pressure from the Therians particularly as the blood supply meant to satisfy the community is somehow tainted. The khiss has given Dylan just three days to solve the riddle of the contamination or face being shut down. Desperate to save ReVamp, Dylan accepts Slade's help to solve the mystery despite her reservations and her attraction to the unusual newborn vampire. Intervamption blends action with emotion and is supported by a solid plot. While the star crossed romance between Slade and Dylan is the focus of the story, Miller doesn't neglect the elements that create an interesting story. She grounds her characters firmly in an imaginative society with strong world building that reveals an interesting lore, and political and social system. This may give this new series an edge over others in the genre who rely almost solely on the romance to carry the story. Intervamption veers to the darker side of the genre where I had expected something lighter from the book description but I enjoyed the well paced, tension filled storyline and will most likely pick up the second installment.
Intervamption is the first book in the Vampire’s of Crimson Bay series by Kristin Miller and a Paranormal Romance from Avon Impulse.
Book Blurb:
Congratulations
Either one or both of your parents has vampire blood. Welcome to the vampire race
Please keep a few things in mind as you ease into the most difficult phase of your life:
1. Light sensitivity, humming teeth, and stomach pains are completely normal. You'll also be faster, stronger, and sexy as hell (if you're lucky).
2. You'll bloodlust and go crazy if you deny your body's urge for blood. Why fight it?
3. Do not pierce the skin of a mundane involuntarily. We're not animals and will not behave as such.
4. Therians, our shapeshifting brethren, cannot be trusted. Their loyalties shift as often as their identities.
And finally,
5. Lighten up - you're not dead.
Contact Dylan, owner of ReVamp, in Crimson Bay, California, for more information.
My thoughts:
Dylan’s father opened ReVamp some years ago as a means for vampire’s to obtain ‘nourishment’ without having to resort to breaking the law - and incurring the wrath of the Therians.
Upon his death, Dylan took over. Now she is not only supplying blood, she is also working to find out why the blood ReVamp supplies is actually weakening the vampire’s that drink it.
Slade is a Therian, a one time Assassin - on the front lines of the Therian/Vampire war. He has been given a chance to redeem his Assassin status with one mission: shift into a vampire and infiltrate the local khiss to gather intel that will turn the tide of war in favor of the Therians.
No problem.
Except it’s a suicide mission - and Slade has been set up...
Intervamption is a enjoyable read.
I feel like the book blurb does the book a disservice - it makes it sound like one of those fun and quirky reads. It’s not.
Intervamption is full of steamy scenes and plenty of action.
I give Intervamption 3 out of 5 stars.

Yeah, interesting take on the whole vampire and shifter thing... But I found that I was bored to tears with this book. The romance was lame, the writing sub-par. Kinda glad that I got it for free. It's been on my Nook for ages, and I hadn't bothered to read it. I'm trying to clear through some of the freebies I got—I flat out deleted some of them... Maybe this one should have joined that group.
Synopsis from the author's blog! Release day: 07/26/2011
ReVamp's hottest Vampire Rehabilitation Specialist has been burning moonlight looking for a cure to what's ailing the blood supply in Crimson Bay, California. The mysterious infection is causing vampires to hit the streets and act like...well...a bit like Dracula when he's cranked out on venti mocha vamppuccinos. Neither her arranged marriage on the blood-smudged horizon, nor the threat of shutting down her clinic can tear DYLAN'S eyes off the prize--proving once and for all vampires aren't blood-lusting primal creatures. The last thing she expects while prepping a newborn for coven induction is to be spun for a wet and wild loop by the muscle bound vampire she finds beaten to a pulp and sprawled out on her bed.
Little does she know, the shape-shifting goon squads dead set on oppressing vampiric rights have a dark trick up their flickering sleeves. They’ve sent a sheep to sleep amongst the wolves…
Shape-shifter by birth, assassin by rank, and vampire by damned unfortunate circumstance, SLADE just wants to penetrate the coven of leeches, complete his risky assignment, and high-tail it out of there. Despite himself and shape-shifting law, he’s fired up; ready to take Dylan six ways from Sunday….with a Blood-Blasted cherry on top. When Slade’s next target is unveiled to be Dylan he must make a choice: complete his task and assassinate the love of his life, putting an end to the vampire uprising or die a traitorous death at the hands of his shape-shifting brothers and kick-start all-out war.
I was kind of annoyed by the stuff about souls early on, in a PNR its not unbelievable that souls really do get sold. I also think that this had the worst blurb ever. I was expecting something way different. That's not bad but now I'm a little sad that I didn't get to read the story I expected (which is silly I know, but what are you going to do?).
But anyway I thought the therian-vampire relations were good and the twists at the end were both expected and really different to what I expected. The stuff with Moses and Savage was confusing, for sometime I thought they were the same person; it was also interesting to see them interact with their "minions" and each other.
Dylan and Slade are really good together and Slade really had that awesome just want to grab him and hug him thing going on.
I didn't hate this book, but I didn't particularly love it either. I read this while waiting for my flight and it kept me entertained, but there were a lot of elements I'd seen previously. Pamela Palmer, in particular, came to mind. I've already started the second book, Vamped Up, but I think Miller's books would appeal more to those who really enjoy Laurie London's Sweetblood series or Laura Wright's Mark of the Vampire series, romances with a horror flavoring.
First off, the blurb about this book is nothing like the voice of the actual book, which was disappointing. I thought it would be irreverent and fun, but it's really just a paranormal romance, which I guess I'm not too into. The set-up was interesting, but then everything got confusing and of course everything was hunky-dory in the end. Even the sex wasn't as exciting as it could have been. But hell, I'm not a vampire, so what do I know? Not reading the next one.
I’m always hesitant with new authors, but after reading the sample chapters, I had to finish it. The story moves quickly, the characters are likeable from the start, has some great dry humor which I love and has some interesting twists and turns. Good read!
For the most part, I enjoyed this book. It was definietly worth reading. It had its fair share of slow parts and a few of the scenes were a little too far fetched for me. But, as a whole, the book was worth the money and not a waste of my time.
Awful. Unreadable. I couldn't make it past the first chapter; it's stilted and foul, without any finesse to the writing. Thankfully this was a library loan, not a purchase.
