With secrets dating back two generations, will Wisteria House unite or destroy an already-fractured family?
Shrouded in scandal and secrets, Arilee Rutledge’s family is as tangled as the thorns surrounding their unwelcoming antebellum mansion. When her brother Davis returns from the Great War, she hopes they will make a new start after a season of devastation. But Davis is haunted by their younger brother’s death and his wife’s committal to the state asylum; while he loses himself in his work, Arilee continues raising his children. Determined to control at least one area of their lives, the siblings hire a former acquaintance to restore their dilapidated home.
Thrown from a carefree boyhood into the horrors of trench warfare, Adam Harrison is broken yet matured by his experiences. He takes a job updating and repairing Wisteria House, not only to pay his way through medical school, but in hopes of winning the woman he has long admired. A startling discovery plunges them all into a series of events revealing dark mysteries and shaking their already-uncertain future.
Can the thorns of grief, pain, and regret ever be cleared from their troubled hearts?
For those who love the Church, for those who have been hurt by the Church, and for those of us who are both, Jennifer Q. Hunt brings a poignant new family saga in which the challenges of life are not glossed over and hope in Christ is never underestimated. Powerful and compelling, Through Thorny Ways is a story of sacrifice and family, forgiveness and love, new beginnings and utter dependence on the Lord. Find a permanent place on your shelf, because once you travel to 1921 Atlanta with Hunt, you aren't going to want to leave. —Heather Wood, Author of the Finding Home series.
Born and raised in the Atlanta area, Jennifer's debut historical fiction work, Some Through the Fire, is set in that very city during the tumultuous events of 1917-1920. Jennifer has worked professionally as a tutor, ghostwriter, editor, and administrative assistant, including 10 years in vocational ministry. She and her husband Christopher live in the Atlanta area with their four young children. Jennifer stays busy writing, editing, homeschooling, and homemaking.
Jennifer Q. Hunt writes fantastic family saga Christian fiction!
I was swept away by the Rutledge family and their rich history. I felt like Hansel and Gretel as I read, picking up ‘evidence’ of how one Rutledge member’s decision in one generation influenced/affected those behind them. Hunt’s fantastic pacing meant that she was able to show us how the individual family members were connected through blood as well as through their actions/reactions.
First of all - THAT cover and title! I love a title that makes me read with purpose.
Secondly, this is a meaty read. It’s not a quick bite at McDonald’s. It’s Sunday dinner at grandma’s house, complete with Brussels sprouts and jellied salad! LOL! I absolutely loved how this author tackled some of the weightier issues, the hard stuff to digest. The stuff you wouldn’t normally reach for at a Sunday dinner. But you’re at grandma’s. And Mom is giving you the side eye. One thing I discovered is that while fast food fills a need and a circumstance, I’m often left hungry later. My advice? Reach for this book. Reach for the Brussels sprouts. Reach for the jellied salad. You might just be surprised how ‘filled’ you are at the end of this book. What do I mean? Hunt discusses what it’s like to be ‘hurt by the Church’ and what you do when Christian people you ‘expect better from’ hurt you. She walks us through the thorny path and shows us that the thorns of grief, pain and regret can be cleared from the way. They don’t have to be a permanent fixture. Hunt's characters wrestle with difficult issues and struggles. You’ll note that if they’re resolved, they’re often tempered with sorrow. I loved seeing them brought to a place where their willingness allowed God to have a hand in their journey. Perhaps even more, I appreciated Hunt highlighting that it’s our reaction to hurt and how we handle hurt that determines the outcome. It was good for me to consider that concept. Are we going to roll over and play dead or are we going to get up, dust ourselves off, pray and recalibrate?
Thirdly, Hunt examines what it’s like to return broken from war, what it’s like to muster the strength to raise children and care for a wife in a state asylum, what it’s like to live with abuse and secrets of the past, and what it’s like to yearn for love yet feel unworthy. Meaty stuff, right?
Fourthly, I enjoyed the spotlight on the medical field. There are two diabetics in my family and Hunt’s examination of the early days of insulin development had me riveted towards the end and made me immensely thankful for the scientific progress in this field.
Finally, I enjoyed the unraveling of a Civil War mystery and noted that the letters sounded authentic (meaning Hunt had applied her research) as did the situations in which the characters were placed. The mystery was a lovely balance between the romance and the family drama.
Thank you to B.M. Baker for putting this author and this book on my radar.
Another excellent tale expertly spun by master storyteller Jennifer Hunt. I'm not typically a historical fiction fan, but I've loved this author's books. They deal with hard themes and impossible situations, but always hand out the hope of the gospel through it all. Can't wait to read the next in the series when it comes out. :)
“Through Thorny Ways” is a book that will stay with you long after you read the final page.
I had high expectations coming into this book…and it exceeded those expectations thoroughly.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever read a book with more faith than this one. Chapter three and on, every time I turned around God was brought up, faith was tested, faith was made new, church hurt was redeemed, and broken pasts were restored. If you’re looking for a book heavy hitting on faith—Through Thorny Ways IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. It is saturated with Scripture in a natural way. Characters--both main and side-- quoted and shared it, but it never felt awkward or unnatural—it was built into who they were.
Tears came and went countless times once I hit the 50% mark. There have been maybe 5 books out of hundreds that I’ve read that have made my cry—this was one of them. And when I say I cried, at parts I literally wept. My eyes are swollen as I write this review. But every single tear was worth it. And each of those tears was well-earned by Jennifer Q. Hunt.
Family secrets, hidden treasure, betrayal, death, straying from God, church hurt, family drama, childhood illness…it’s all in here and all pieced together creating the beautiful mosaic of God’s perfect plan.
I need to say it again: the faith in this book is flawless. Natural. Authentic. Beautiful. It’s crucial to these character’s overcoming the obstacles in their life. It’s crucial for the Christian reading this beautiful book—because this book is hard. And I mean that in the best way possible. Even through the tears I NEEDED to power through and see what happened next.
Adam and Airlee’s romance is slow and oh so beautiful. Unconventional, but so perfect. And yes, it was central to the story, but I loved how Jesus was center stage in their relationship and in this story.
There are a billion other things I could say. But I’ll end with this: go get this book. It is absolutely amazing. You can thank me later.

This book! I could hardly put it down. Such fantastic depth and words of wisdom in this story, I wanted to highlight all over the place. From a beautiful romance to complicated and poignant family ties to a house full of mysteries, there are so many layers of story to discover, all I can say is you must read it for yourself. As for me, I'm ready to dive into book 2!
In the wake of finishing this incredible story I still can’t believe it has taken me this long to pick up one of Hunt’s books. I have a lot of catching up to do and couldn’t be more excited. Fellow readers know that feeling, the joyful realization you have discovered your next auto-read author and you can’t wait to devour everything they’ve ever written.
Through Thorny Ways was breathtaking, charming, heart wrenching at times but all together incredible. Each character was thoughtfully and uniquely crafted and their individual journeys were so edifying to me as a believer. The RESEARCH that went into this story shines from beginning to end, and the author’s careful attention to detail completely transported me. I felt like I was right there.
I am so excited to see where this cast of characters is taken next!
When I asked for raw, gritty and gut-wrenching book recs, you guys truly came through! I am so happy I discovered this deep and heartfelt novel full of family drama and journeys of heartache, faith and hope. Amazing characters and a plot that made it so very hard for me to pull away from. I loved the emotional roller coaster and the last 25% or so…what…a…ride!
There are layers upon layers of secrets within the Rutledge family tree and Arilee is left trying to hold all the remaining broken pieces together. Church scandal, wartime drama, mental and physical wounds have left them all with a wavering faith in God.
Arilee is helping to raise her niece and nephew – her brother, Davis, had fought in the Great War and came home to a wife that is locked up in a psychiatric hospital. Arilee’s mother has died, and their father disappeared. Their brother died in the war and truly the grief of all they’ve endured is too much to handle. Arilee’s only bright spot in life comes from her former student, Adam Harrison. He too fought in the war and lost a brother so he can relate to their grief. When Arilee and Davis hire Adam to help fix up their old, dilapidated Wisteria House, deep friendships are formed. Arilee, four years Adam’s senior, is confused by the romantic feelings she starts feeling for him. Adam feels the same, but both seem hesitant to consider a future together.
Adam’s maturity and strong Christian faith are just what the Rutledge family needed. He’s somewhat of a glue that binds them all together in a healing way. I don’t want to go into too great of detail about this family’s journey as there are just so many surprises. This story is full of shocking moments that will keep you 100% invested. Beautifully written and inspiring from start to finish. I look forward to picking up book two.

Sockdolager, what a book!! I never doubt that I'm going to love a book by Jennifer Q. Hunt. I see her name and I don't even need to read the blurb to know I need her book. Her writing is unlike any other. From the first page of Through Thorny Ways she had me riveted.
I loved every character and each one of them had a little endearing quality that made them all the more real, especially Adam's strong need to be clean, and one character (not sharing name bc spoiler) who speaks in hymns. There were struggles, secrets, and sorrows. Swoons, chuckles, ah-hah moments, and plenty of things that left me in suspense and turning the pages so fast and staying up way past my bedtime (something I've learned is just a given with this author).
This is a well-researched, beautifully articulated story with deep content, a strong plot, well-developed characters, and precious spiritual truths. I love how I can learn more about God right along with the characters.
The medical aspect of this book really captured my attention, and I found the planes and flying so interesting! Give me more!! This is like a one-of-a-kind book and I loved it!
I cannot even imagine the fear a diabetes diagnosis would have evoked, or how terrible the only treatment was back then. I also feel so bad for Davis and the difficult situation with his wife in the insane asylum. Then there is all the family secrets that are uncovered...ugh, these characters go through it all, but find the strength and grace they need to weather it all in their Saviour.
Adam and Arilee, Davis, Nathaniel and Macy, and (a name I'll not mention so I don't spoil anything) will stick with me a long time, I know, and I'm anxiously awaiting book 2! I can only guess who's story gets told next. Eeek!
I was honored to receive an advanced review copy from the author and all opinions are my own and voluntarily shared.
New contender for my favorite book so far this year?? I think so! The reviews had me wanting to check this out from the library, but my library's system (even across the state) didn't have it. I had a hard time finding Through Thorny Ways on anything other than Kindle, so I finally bit the bullet and signed up for Kindle unlimited. And y'all, the reviews weren't lying.
This had everything from LOADS of family drama, church hurt and forgiveness, a sweet (clean) romance, PTSD from WWI, mental health, gangster ties, and medical emergencies. I know you're thinking that sounds a little chaotic, but Jennifer Q Hunt ran the gamut through all of these issues to perfection.
I could go on and on about this novel, but I'll just leave it at, please download and read. I'm opening the second Wisteria House novel now...
This was a fantastic story! Full of great Christian content! I was captivated by the story and loved the characters! I listened to the audiobook and it was very well done. I definitely recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This book! I have loved everything I’ve read by this author and am always excited to learn when she has a new book coming out. Not only does author Jennifer Q. Hunt craft amazing stories that make you want to keep turning pages, but she writes with such heart, depth and spiritual inspiration that I feel uplifted for having read each of her books. She writes about real life in well-researched historical times and doesn’t shy away from hard topics. Yet through each of her books, the characters find hope and inspiration through their own and/or others’ personal faith walks. Through Thorny Ways is the first book in her new Wisteria House series and takes place after the Great War, in 1921-22. It revolves around an antebellum era house and its current occupants who find themselves impacted by the events and people who came before them. This book deals with tenuous family dynamics, family secrets, post-war stress, mystery and an oh-so-sweet romance that is all the more tender for what the couple endures to get to their happily-ever-after. Prayer, faith and belonging are core inspirational themes of this book which I found to be so encouraging. Since the house and family history are integral to the story, I found very helpful the inclusion of a floor plan and family tree and referred back to them both as I read the book. I also loved revisiting members of the Sweet family(who are featured in Hunt’s Sorrow and Song trilogy which I also highly recommend). This is a book that grabbed me from the beginning and left me thoroughly captivated while I savored each chapter. This is a must-read author for me and I can’t recommend this book highly enough to readers of Christian historical romance!
I received an advanced reader copy from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions expressed above are completely my own.
Jennifer does it again! Her Sorrow and Song Trilogy are some of my favorite books ever, and she didn't disappoint with the beginning of this new trilogy. Through Thorny Ways was yet another book with strong character and spiritual arcs, unique and relatable characters, and a setting that was a character all its own. This one was full of both intrigue and mystery, as well as historical accuracy. I truly appreciate Jennifer's historical aspect and the things I learned about history from her novels. And the characters!! Arilee was such a dear, and not to mention Adam ❤️ a new hearthrob in this new series that has stolen my heart! The romance was one of my favorite things about this novel. I'm very curious to know what happens with them as well as the other characters. This book was very touching, exciting, and full of twists and turns. Can't wait for book #2!! :)
Readers of Christian fiction, I implore you to do one of two things: either end or begin your reading year right by reading a Jennifer Q. Hunt book!
📖 Through Thorny Ways 📖
✔️ Witty banter ✔️ Swoony MMC ✔️ Lovable FMC ✔️ Intriguing and at times utterly heartwarming family dynamics ✔️ An element of mystery and secrets ✔️ Authentic faith illustrated through powerful themes and actions ✔️ A dollop of humor here and there ✔️A Superb Audiobook Narrator
Switching between audio and ebook depending on whether I had chores or was free to sit and highlight as many quotes and passages as I desired, this story is one I gladly hope to own a physical copy of SOON so I can show it off on my shelf and annotate my favorite parts and moments which are a lot of them and I’ll share just a few nonspoilery ones down below!
"When our church hurts us, the answer isn’t to abandon the Body of Christ altogether, but to find fellowship with others who are living out the Church’s biblical mission. Recovery isn’t quick or easy, but it is vital. Amputation from the body isn’t healing, it’s death.”
Every fan of Christian fiction needs to give this one a read. This one may just be my most favorite read of the year!
“Adam strikes me as a man who knows what he wants in life and isn’t likely to be coerced into anything he doesn’t want to do.” Davis arched his eyebrow. “Besides, you bake a man a pie, and there’s no telling how long he’ll stick around.”
Adam and Arilee are so sweet, if I had a chart of the top ten or fifteen shippable and incredibly adorable couples in fine Christian fiction, they’d definitely be on there!
Loving Arilee the way she needed to be loved might be the hardest, best thing he’d ever done.
So this is my first Hunt book and it definitely won’t be the last. I can’t wait to dive into book 2 and the rest of the series as well as the other series, Sorrow and Song. I know I’m going to be in good hands with her Faith-filled stories!
Somehow the daily pouring out of herself for both the children had become a spiritual discipline, an act of worship that had kept her tethered to God in the raging winds of her own doubts and fears.
<333
“Thank you,” she whispered in disbelief that she’d been given the gift of compassion without having to bare her soul as to why she needed it.
Multiple times, I found myself teary-eyed and then full-on crying (even in public! Well done, author!) because the faith is just so beautifully woven. My own faith was certainly bolstered, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to listen to this ALC. All options expressed here are my own.
Another lovely story by this author! It only took me a while to read it because we were out of the country. Otherwise I would have had it read in just a couple of days.
The author creates such deep, meaningful characters and I enjoy getting to know them... most of them. hahaha some aren't the greatest (intentionally). The main character, Arilee, is sweet and strong. She's the glue that's keeping her family together. She has so much responsibility put on her at such a young age. Her brother isn't much help as he's checked out emotionally from his kids, and his wife is in an asylum.
We also get to know Adam who is a bit younger than dear Arilee. While he may be younger, he's grown into a responsible young man who is always ready to step up to the plate. He ends up helping Arilee and her brother renovate their house. While he's at it, he shows his love for Arilee in many different ways.
There are lots of twists and turns, one of which I fully expect to see more of in future stories! Davis finally begins to take stock in his life, as brother to Arilee, but also as father to his two children. While the events that happen aren't easy, they have a profound impact on him. Lots of harrowing moments to bring him to his "come to Jesus" experience.
The faith in this story is beautiful, while dealing with being hurt by the church. I appreciate that the author tackled such a difficult topic. Also, the topics of forgiveness, healing, and restoration are sweetly woven into the story. I truly can't wait for book two!
*I received the book for review. This is my personal opinion.
So so good! Highly recommend! Although she deals with difficult topics, the whole book is filled with the gospel and the hope we have in Christ. Christ is stronger than any difficulty we face and he is the great comforter!
This book deserves alllll the stars!! I thoroughly enjoyed every part of this book! I felt like I was right there in the midst of it all with Arilee. I laughed and cried. Her journey back to Christ was realistic and heartfelt. And so was Adam’s. I loved how the author showed them each seeking advice and wisdom from more mature Christians, and how she portrayed the body of Christ stepping up and being the hands and feet of Jesus. Their romance was tender and sweet. Nathaniel and Macy made me smile. I enjoyed the historical and mystery elements of the story as well. I am very much looking forward to books 2 and 3!!
This story caught my attention from beginning to end. I loved the character development and how church and God played a large role in the characters' change. There were laugh out loud moments and tears during other moments. If you like Christian historical, you'll love this one.
What a touching story! It’s not a light read. In fact, there are some pretty heavy topics/moments, but this book also contains such precious deep moments that made me think. I highlighted several quotes! I also enjoyed all the history. Set in Post-WW1, it was intriguing to learn more about the culture in America, suffering of soldiers (PTSD) and a bit about the history of diabetes/insulin.
Ok, let me say how much I love historical books that teach you something while also bringing characters to life! This is my first time reading a story by this author, but I doubt it will be my last, because of how she pulled me into these people’s lives. Arilee (oh and how I enjoyed the story behind that name!), Adam, their family and friends were relatable (very human and sometimes broken) characters I could get being.
I mentioned the spiritual depth…Wow. This book deals with some super heavy topics, but the reminders of God’s truth woven throughout were fantastic. The title of “Through Thorny Ways” fits perfectly. This author tackled some really hard situations, but kept pointing us back to the Truth. I appreciated the reminders of God’s presence, the importance of the body of Christ being together, the effects of sin—boy it hurts—, and also the mercy of the Lord. Due to the content (I’ll list below to the best of my ability), I would recommend this book for mature readers.
There is a bit of mystery, and I enjoyed that aspect though it got pushed to the wayside due to other happenings (no spoilers!), but the story itself flowed really well. I think the next books will likely pick up some of those loose ends—at least I hope so 😉
There is romance in this book. It felt like a fairly good balance though and that Arilee and Adam were pretty adorable. There was a lot of kissing especially near the end. There was also a fade to black scene that pushed my comfort level. I gave this book 4⭐️ personally instead of 5 for that reason and the following one. Not related to the romance, but there is also a conversation about a brothel. The author was discreet, but it’s not just in passing. It was an important moment to the story and heartbreaking. But also left me feeling a bit dirty (which sin should! And the author painted it as such). Personal opinion, but I would have preferred less detail about it. (Phil. 4:8, Psalm 19:14).
So as a whole I really loved this book and look forward to the second one! There is so little it seems written about this time period, and I loved learning more about my great grandparents era. There’s also a bit of civil war history. If you enjoy historical settings and rich faith content with relatable characters, you’ll enjoy reading about the Rutledge family as well.
Content: adultery, fornication, brothel, domestic abuse, PTSD, war memories, death of loved ones, church hurt, two uses of profanity
This has been the third book in a row that has made me cry. I have never had this happen consecutively.
During 1921, Arilee is trying to get through post WWI life. Her and her brother are updating their family house with electricity and plumbing. They hire an old acquaintance of Arilee’s from before the war.
I haven’t read anything the has dealt with WWI or soon after and what happened to the soldiers who returned. I was educated by my husband that it wasn’t called PTSD then but shell shock.
I like how the author went with the topic of church hurt and learning how to forgive the past and move on through hardships of life. Through Adam and Arilee, the story navigates through pain from the past as well as giving those we love into the hands of God. Quick note, if you are a Shakespeare fan, then this book is for you. Arilee is a fan of Shakespeare.
I was going to jump straight into the second book, but I am needing something light and fluffy before I deal with anymore heavy topic books.
This book is filled with so many good things: history, family, faith, mystery, but also reality and difficult topics. I appreciated the inclusion of the details of restoring a historic home, early flight, and the hardships experienced by returning WWI veterans. Hunt has woven together an unforgettable tapestry and further beautified it with Scripture, hymns, and Shakespeare.
I listened to the audiobook edition and found it very easy and comfortable to listen to, even with the female narration of male characters.
Honestly, this book sucked me in and would not let me go. I was so drawn to the characters, their struggles, their dreams, and their genuine personalities. There were beautiful elements of faith woven throughout in such a natural way, I found it all to be believable and encouraging. And then there were the mysteries, and the romance, and the tragedies, all spun together in such a whirlwind of emotions. I cried a lot, and there were a few moments that nearly wrecked me, but I was so thankful to be along for the ride.
I received a free ARC of this books. All thoughts and opinions shared here are my own.
Though it’s set in the past, Through Thorny Ways deals with topics so relevant to today’s society. PTSD, church hurt, family trauma, and racial tensions are all tough topics addressed with authenticity and grace. The characters are so real and relatable, I immediately fell in love with all of them. Hunt is a true wordsmith with a great talent for bringing difficult topics to light in a way that brings the reader more towards Christ.
This book was impossible to put down! I loved the romance, the characters, the historical details, and perhaps most of all, the portrayal of the Church as a good gift that God gives each of us to sustain us in our faith in Him. ❤️
This was such a delightful novel to read. It was funny and romantic and it also had scriptures to encourage. The story of a teacher and her student with an age gap of four years who fell in love while both going through challenging periods in their lives. I loved Adams' doggedness, perseverance and how resolute he was about Arilee. I also loved Arilee's loving and caring nature and faith in God to show up for her and her family when it mattered most. I look forward to starting book 2.
I love the setting and the details/events the author gives of the era. It was a sweet, heart-stirring read that will strike a chord with everyone who reads it.
I'm so glad there are more books in this series. I never got bored with the storyline. Each time I thought I knew what was coming, I was surprised! I also appreciated the messages of faith throughout.
This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I continue to be impressed with all that she packs into a story. And it makes me eager to go back and dive into her backlist.
I loved these characters—each one with such depth and wounds in need of healing. She skillfully weaves in the faith that helps to do this. If you’ve read her Sorrow and Song series, you’ll be delighted to see a bit of some of those characters in this book.
As someone who loves old houses, I really connected with the process of remodeling the ancestral home and with the character hired to accomplish it. Adam is a charming and endearing hero and the sweet romance that develops between him and Arilee kept me turning pages. The mystery that surfaces during this renovation adds to the captivating storyline.
There is no doubt this author is committed to research with the small historical details that give this setting such authenticity. Readers will certainly feel as if they’ve taken a trip into the Roaring Twenties—with the roar of early aviation included. I’m greatly looking forward to the next book.
I received an early copy of this book and agreed to write an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Many Christian novels shy away from depicting the real pain and struggles that everyone, including Christians, faces daily. What I appreciated about this one was its portrayal of imperfect characters who grapple with attending church, dealing with the challenges life throws at them, and the difficult journey of forgiveness—both of themselves and those around them.
The characters felt genuine, experiencing love and hurt in a very real way.
Moreover, the story didn't drag on or become overly preachy. It’s an engaging read for everyone, including non-Christians
