The author of "The Ninth District" does a great job in writing his debut thriller. He hooked me right at the beginning of his novel- I could see myself standing in the middle of the bank atrium with a gun pointed right at me. I believe Doug Dorow has an amazing talent for crafting sympathetic characters and believable dialogue.
In the novel, FBI Agent Jack Miller is a seasoned agent. When the Federal Reserve Bank is robbed, he is paired up on the tough high-profile case with Ross Fruen, an inexperienced young agent. Agent Miller becomes the young agent's mentor and teaches him the ropes. Together, the FBI agents chase the evil bank robber through the bowels, storm sewers and tunnels of the city.
The sinister and depraved criminal is nicknamed The Governor because he wears a mask of the Governor and salutes the security cameras as he leaves the bank after the robbery. The Governor has already robbed several banks, but the last one winds up with him murdering a helpless, pregnant woman.
FBI Agent Miller is often separated from his wife and kids and wants to get back to his family. But, as a dedicated lawman, his job must come first and he dutifully sacrifices his home life in order to catch the corrupt killer.
I believe readers will enjoy "The Ninth District" just as much I did and will look forward to more novels by Doug Dorow.

When I started reading The Ninth District, I was skeptical. At 131 pages(in the PDF), the book clocks in at roughly half the length of the thrillers I usually read. Bad news: it IS a quick read. Good news: The Ninth District manages to punch well above its weight for the entire length of the ride.
Enter Jack Miller and Ross Fruen: the age-old combo of the veteran and the rookie in the FBI's Minneapolis field office. The veteran's seen his family disintegrate and the current murder/bank robbery case isn't helping.
It's a classic formula, but Doug Dorow makes it work once more in this, his debut thriller--crafting sympathetic characters and believable dialogue that carries the story along.
If you're a fan of FBI thrillers without the excess detail of a procedural, if you're looking for a quick, easy read, if you've ever wondered what might happen if the Federal Reserve was robbed--then you need to check out The Ninth District.

First in a series, first read by this author.
FBI Special Agent Jack Miller, Jack is a family man with plenty going for him, although his marriage is a little rocky, he is pulled into a high-profile case to mentor a new agent Ross, better known as Junior, he finds himself in a clash with the toughest opponent of his career. The chase culminates in the bowels of the city, in the storm sewers and tunnels beneath The Ninth District Federal Reserve of Minneapolis.
Ross is the agent overseeing bank robberies being committed by an identified as "The Governor". In pursuit of this individual causes chaos, shooting, car accidents.
The characters are good, run smoothly, but quite a few flaws to me personally. Lacked suspense, pace, lacked answers in fact quite a few answers, lacked depth of story.

High hopes - dashed!

On reading the first seven chapters, I had high hopes for this novel. The character of Jack was well drawn and the author showed us what he was like through mannerisms and dialogue. The story premise of the FBI trying to catch a bank robber was interesting and so was the relationship between the older agent Jack and his younger partner Ross.
Unfortunately from Chapter 8 onwards it all fell apart, almost as if the remainder of the novel was either written by someone else, or the first few chapters had been polished and the rest of the novel wasn’t. The characterisation of the Governor was all over the place, as though the author didn’t know his character very well, leaving the reader confused as to the type of person he was. Story threads were begun, but never mentioned again. The novel jumps in time and place, with no explanation to support it. The dialogue between Jack and Ross becomes stilted and clichéd and I became very irritated with them constantly asking each other if they were OK.
The conclusion of the novel was disappointing. I do not intend to discuss the ending in detail as this would reveal too much, but it is all over the place, muddled, confusing and at times implausible.
I wish the excellent start and engaging writing style had been sustained throughout the book.

Very happy to have become acquainted with another very good Minnesota author! The Ninth District refers to the Federal Reserve Bank, located in downtown Minneapolis. It has Never been robbed, but there is always the first time to have a successful attack, right?
I won't spill the details of the case, but a new, rookie FBI agent is paired with a senior agent and they have their hands full figuring out what is about to happen! A very enjoyable revisit to a state where we once lived!

I received a copy of "The Ninth District-A Thriller" by Douglas Dorow through Read4Free Book Giveaway Event.I read it on my Kindle.
I love to read mystery suspense crime thrillers, and this novel was amazing! I was glued to my Kindle from page one and I couldn't put it down.This novel was well written, the characters are well developed and the bad guy was really bad.
The Federal Reserve has never been robbed. FBI Special agent Jack Miller is pulled into a high-profile case to mentor a new agent, "Junior"/Ross Fruen. They are pretty sure all 4 have been committed by the same person wearing the same mask, custom made.There has been a string of Bank Robberies, the last one resulted in a murder of a woman who was pregnant.I hated the bad guy/Governor for this.The Bank Robber is a person wearing a mask of the Governor and salutes to the security camera as he leaves the building.The officials have linked the past 4 Bank Robberies together over the past 4 months.The FBI is working with other law enforcements to find the criminal ASAP.
Jack is separated from his wife Julie and kids.He wants to get back with his family, but his job has always come first.Jack has a very human side to his character and the reader wants Jack to get back with his family as well as catch this creep.
I was very impressed with the overall plot of this authors' first novel.If you enjoy reading thrillers this book is for you.I will definately be watching for more novels by this talented author.

It left me wanting more.
This is a Mystery/Thriller with a touch of Family Drama.
FBI Special Agent Jack Miller was assigned to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area to the delight of his wife. When he considers taking another position elsewhere, his personal life is in turmoil. He is a professional so he makes every effort to keep the two separate. Jack's rookie partner takes the lead on a bank robbery/murder case while Jack lends a hand with his years of experience. When the villain, nicknamed The Governor, begins to feel the squeeze, he fights back placing Jack, his partner, and his family at risk of death. How will it all end? You'll just have to read the whole story to find out.
I love how Mr. Dorow shows the viewpoint of the Governor as well as Jack. Even more intriguing is the reader doesn't know who the villain is until all is revealed. I also love the sense of family that is shown when we see into Jack's thoughts. I look forward to reading more by Mr. Dorow.
Warning: This book is for Mature Audiences due to Violence, Sexual Situations, and Adult Language.

I'm not sure exactly what I expected from The Ninth District by Douglas Dorow, but I know what I got--an engrossing, captivating page turner that made me wonder what would happen next.
I found the main characters to be solid, the villain, known only as the Governor, to be cold and calculating, and I did find myself wrapped up in the personal struggle protagonist Jack Miller had with trying to keep his family together while helping to track down the bad guy.
The combination of the Minneapolis Fed and detail of the sewer tunnels and cave networks underneath the city were both intriguing to me.
I do agree with some reviewers here that the ending was rather abrupt, which to me screams of a sequel. I also agree that it would have been nice to know more about the Governor's background since what is revealed doesn't seem enough motivation to kill, though it was enough to steal.
I highly recommend The Ninth District and look forward to the next book in this series.

Dorow's characters are well crafted. They are easy to believe, realistic and sympathetic. FBI Agent Jack Miller is a seasoned agent paired with Ross Fruen, a young agent looking to learn the ropes. Their first case together is a tough one. One man, nicknamed The Governor, has robbed several banks. He doesn't take much money and doesn't usually kill but the last robbery he inexplicably kills a pregnant young woman. The Governor has a plan and his plan is much bigger than simple bank robberies. Miller and Fruen know that their time is short to find him and when The Governor starts targeting them, time runs out.
Douglas Dorow gives us a fascinating crime to figure out and immerses us in the scenery as well. I was able to lose myself in the process of tracking a criminal and become acquainted with the personal life of Agent Jack Miller. His struggles with family and job were very real. Dorow doesn't create a superhero but a man with a family and a love for his job.
Some of the things I found endearing about Jack was his humility and his propensity to give everyone nicknames.
Fans of Crime Drama will be happy to welcome Douglas Dorow into the fold!

When a series of bank robberies result in the murder of a pregnant woman, Jack Miller, a seasoned FBI agent and Ross Fruen, “Junior”, are assigned to the case. The robber has never killed before, so why did he start now? This is just one question they need to uncover in order to find their guy.
The gunman wore a mask, and due to its appearance was quickly assigned the nickname of “the Governor”. As they follow the clues, and the case threatens the agents’ lives, they only become more determined to find their guy.
When it becomes clear the ultimate target is the Federal Reserve, “which has never been robbed before”, they believe they know what “the Governor’s” next step is.
Dorow has written a well-paced thriller, which sweeps the reader along through the use of multiple points of view. His characters were well-written and had me invested in the story until its exciting conclusion.

Doug Dorow does an excellent job in his debut thriller at forcing the reader to commit to his characters. I'm so glad this is the first in a series, because I need to know, need to experience, the evolution of these people. The story reminded me of Michael Connelly's The Black Echo though I found Durow's main character to be a bit more endearing than the infamous Harry Bosch. The story kept me intrigued, though, as needs to be in a series, it proved to be the relationships between the characters that set The Ninth District apart from much of its genre. Suspense, intrigue, mystery... Can't wait to make that transition from the last page of Ninth District into the first pages of the sequel. I'm hoping that Durow has the endurance to match the longevity of the Bosch series, because I'd be infinitely interested in seeing where these characters end up. Bravo!

Douglas Dorow does a good job of building a suspenseful crime novel. The story line jumps from good guy to bad guy. I found this to be an interesting approach, but some may find it confusing. While the book is not action packed but there are enough action scenes to keep you quickly turning the pages. As for the main character Jack, Dorow creates an tough, experienced FBI agent, combined with a soft heated family man. HE is very likable and it leads the reader to root even harder for the hero.

You have to be kidding me - my reaction to the ending. And not in a good way. Even as a setup for the second half (can't really call it a sequel) it was a lame ending.
I enjoyed reading a book set locally. Actualy that was the best part of this book. Loaded with loose ends and astonishingly unbelievable behavior by most of the cast.

FBI agents in Minnesota track a bank robber turned murderer. Pretty good story and well-written. I liked the FBI characters, but I had a hard time with the bank robber, he didn't feel like a real person and I didn't understand some of his motivations. A lot of unanswered questions gives this book 3.5 stars. I'm willing to read the next book in the series and look for some answers there.

An excellent first novel. The beginning is captivating, the story doesn't slow down through the middle, and the ending is intelligent and satisfying. More than having an exciting plot, the character's personal lives are layered, giving the story an added dimension of intrigue and suspense.

A great thriller in a unique landscape. Not a cookie cutter action yarn by any standard, this is fresh and inventive, with just the right mix of brains and kinetics.

This book kept my attention and was very hard to put down! I loved how the point of view would switch between the good guy and the bad guy, giving both perceptions. I would recommend to anyone!

I really liked this book. The characters were good and the plot was believable. The unfolding action kept me guessing exactly what the bad guys were really doing and how it was all going to play out.

Un libro que me ha decepcionado. Me esperaba más de él; no un best-seller pero sí un libro con suspense, con acción, con intriga. Pero no ha tenido nada de eso. Tal vez porque no conseguía concentrarme en la lectura debido a la versión que tengo del libro: una traducción que mezcla el castellano español con el latino (el de las viejas pelis de Disney).

This is the first book written by Douglas Dorow that I’ve had a chance to read. As I am an avid fan of suspense thrillers and detective stories, this book really appealed to me. I actually purchased it for my Kindle reader way back in 2011. I had just joined a book club a few months before purchasing this particular book, and must admit I got caught up in reading all the books that were coming at me fast and furious for the next few months.
I must say I’m finally glad I got around to picking this one up and that I jumped in with both feet. Jack (our main character) and “junior“ made quite a team in this particular story. I am now told that there are sequels to this particular book, and that there’s a spinoff that features Ross as the main protagonist.
Kudos to Douglas Dorow, I will be picking up additional books by him in the future.

Douglas Dorow used the setting normally associated with Lucas Davenport. Minnesota, The Mississippi… what’s not to like about it? A seasoned FBI Special Agent and a rookie partner are working a case involving a mocking, elusive thief called the Governor, due to a facemask that closely emulates the State Governor. But to date, the Governor has only scored small amounts, from several hundred to 10 -15 thousand dollars, while confounding law enforcement with guile and misdirection. When it appears that they are getting too close to the main event, the Governor decides to take the two FBI Special Agents off the board.
The story has great pacing, as details are doled out slowly and a picture gradually takes shape. It was almost at the end, before I started to get a sense as to what the main objective was. It was a one-day read, with lots of action and suspense, and I was not going to get distracted from finishing the story.
Dorow is fairly new to the realm of published thrillers, and this novel is a strong indicator that he is going to go far.

It was a one-day read, with lots of action and suspense, and I was not going to get distracted from finishing the story.
Dorow is fairly new to the realm of published thrillers, and this novel is a strong indicator that he is going to go far.

A Tense Nail Biter
FBI agents Jack Miller and Ross Friends get a case of bank robberies around the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area that have a common thread. He wears a mask looking like the face of the ex-governor of Minnesota (which earns him the designation of "The Governor") and he salutes the security camera on his way out of the bank. Not much to go on and doesn't attract a lot of attention from the FBI until he shoots a very pregnant cashier in the head on the way out of his last holdup. This causes great consternation for Jack. He's currently estranged from his own family. With few clues and nearly no evidence Jack and Ross have to look under rock and run down every niggling thought and still nearly miss the ultimate target of the bank thief. While I won't let you know whodunit I will say things get better for Jack.

FBI Special Agent Jack Miller leads the investigation even if it isn't technically his case. He has grit and determination that drives him forward. He also cares deeply about his family and his friends, too, suffering whenever one of them is hurt. He's a true friend. He's also a bit of a joker, making him seem that much more real.
As the story unfolds it takes on more dimensions. Getting things figured out is one of Jack's strong suits along with his partner Ross Fruen. They make a good team. Sometimes they are a step behind the bad guys and fail to protect people they care about, but that's life, isn't it? It's a great story and will leave you knowing much more about Minneapolis than you ever would have imagined.

The Ninth District: An FBI Thriller (Book 1)
Absolutely great story! Riveting from the very first page, you can't put this one down. Well written, good editing (only a few grammatical errors), and always fast moving... never a dull moment. The only thing that disappointed me was that the link to sign up for the Dorow Thriller Reader List does not work. Hopefully this is an easy fix. Please, Mr. Dorow, if you are reading this, could you have it fixed soon? Thank you, and thanks for a great read! Looking forward to more in this series!!! Definitely 5 stars and 5 thumbs -ups!!! (?) May be Dorows first book but you'd never know!
This book nails it with suspense from the the first page!
The author must have done hours of research creating this novel the storyline is so realistic you'll swear your right there with every action packed event as they unfold. As FBI mysteries go this is hands down the best and most realistic FBI story I've ever read, I can't believe this is the first offering from Douglas Dorow. If you like law enforcement mystery books this is a must read novel.
