Urban Fruit

Fruit Cocktail: A Novel

Rate this book
In this freshly squeezed sequel to the critically acclaimed On Picking Fruit, Curtis Jenkins ironically pens the bestselling self-help book, 101 Ways To Collide Into Your Gay Soul Mate, while still finding himself single and in the deep end of the dating pool.

As Curtis embarks on an adventurous book tour, his party girl mother, Mrs. J., and exasperating best friend, Quinn Larkin, help him brave the fickle dating scene while adjusting to his new found fame. But whether he finds true love or not, Curtis does find himself and that's the best discovery anyone can make.

Funny, unpredictable, warm and surprisingly emotion, Fruit Cocktail is, like its feckless hero, ripe for the picking.

It was so great to return to the characters in Fruit Cocktail from Arthur Wooten's On Picking Fruit. I felt as if I were returning to a dear friend (that luckily I had only seen a few months ago when I read the first one) along with new characters that were just as vivid as those from the original. There is something wonderful about reading a book set in NYC - from Washington Square up to Belvedere Castle in Central Park. Wooten has once again taken us on a journey of the city seen through the eyes of the man who gets into more mishaps than Lucy did with Ethel. (Along with some great treks to other cities that fall on my list of favorite places, so reading the book was going on a mini vacation for me.) This is the third novel I've read of Mr. Wooten's and what really excites me is his ability to change his tone and prose based on the story he is telling. His 'fruit' series can be laugh out loud funny while his Birthday Pie is humor laced with a filling of bitter reality. But I was in the mood for the antics of Curtis Jenkins and his best friend and the laughs did not disappoint. A great escape into a zanny & witty world of a gay man's romp through wonderful and exciting New York City - with just enough heart thrown in to keep you waiting for Wooten to give us the next chapter in Curtis' life.

The incomparable Arthur Wooten returned to print with Fruit Cocktail, the sequel to his popular debut novel On Picking Fruit. It’s not often that one enjoys a sequel as much as the first novel in a series but with Fruit Cocktail, Mr. Wooten has achieved this admirably.

Curtis Jenkins, our hero from On Picking Fruit, has found himself a celebrity with his book 101 Ways to Collide into Your Gay Soul Mate. Yet he hasn’t collided with his yet, in spite of the book’s success. Curtis sets out on a book tour and along for the ride are his flamboyant mother Mrs. J. and his best friend Quinn, who’s a character worthy of a novel unto himself on his own. As is often the case, Curtis discovers a lot during his tour, through his many adventures and with the help of his supporting cast, and chiefly among these discoveries is a sense of himself that will endure whether he finds his Mr. Right, or not.

My next question for the author of Birthday Pie is when will we meet Curtis again? Come on, Mr. Wooten. The third book in this series is greatly anticipated.

A classic! Arthur Wooten has turned Fruit Cocktail into haute cuisine!

"Outrageously Funny"

This is a wonderful, humorous story by very imaginative and talented author Arthur Wooten. It's a sequel to "On Picking Fruit." Here, Curtis Jenkins embarks on an adventurous book tour after writing "101 Ways To Collide Into Your Gay Soul Mate." This fun story includes his mom (Mrs. J.) and his best friend, Quinn. It's a journey in life of trying to find the right man to love, and to have that love returned. The scenes will take you to a local live-theater performance of old, old-time actors to the experience of having a colonoscopy for the first time. The story is unimaginably funny! I was reading and laughing out loud while enjoying a latte drink at the coffee shop. I certainly recommend this highly humorous, yet revealing real issues of daily life and dreams.

A fun read. Loved the settings and details. The characters were fun and eccentric.
