The monk as man the unknown life of swami Vivekananda - sankar

A detailed insight into the life of Swami Vivekanand.

This book makes us aware of the fact that monks are just like other people. They can have severe health, financial as well as family issues. Swamiji, despite being a monk, was still struggling to find a balance between a secluded sanyasi life and fulfilling his responsibilities towards his family. He is one of the rare monks who does not justify leaving family responsibilities for monkhood.

The book is quite detailed as in who said what to whom, how different people have tea and many unnecessary-looking nuances. But more you read such facts, the more you connect to him as a person.

Though the book is not meant for that, but I was hoping to have some perspective on his teachings as well. This would have helped us understand more why a particular person has high standards for Swamiji.

Other than that, I sometimes felt a bit lost. Who are these people exactly! perhaps some of his wellwishers or disciples and I continued. Second thing, he was travelling a lot so sometimes I didn't know where he was currently. So perhaps it's me or the book is slightly unorganized on that part.

But overall, it's a good book to read. A great study by Sankar.

Fascinating. We frequently hear about quotes attributed to Swami Vivekananda, his address in the 'parliament of religions' and his contribution to Sanatan Dharma and India. But, never knew that this great man faced many troubles - medical, financial and even legal! The great personalities that I read about/know have been majorly defined by struggles with their external environments - class wars/freedom struggle/social movements etc. But, here is a soul who did so much, in a span less than 40 years, with all the medical ailments (and financial/legal struggles his family was facing). Probably, many other monks faced similar issues and I haven't read autobiographies of any other, but it is humbling to know how much can be achieved despite major limitations.
I found the narration a little difficult (in the beginning in particular) and that is why it isn't a 5-star.

This is really worst book . The author goes to nuances of his life but ulitmately losing the very purpose of describing the main pictures.

The author has no idea of where to start and where to end just like I write this comment.

Plethora of unnecessary information irrelevant to the situations are presented .

This book brings out the vulnerabilities and challenges in Vivekananda's life. What I like is, the book demystifies the "Swami" and presents the idea that we all have weaknesses. What distinguishes an evolved soul from the rest is - how one lives through these weak moments.

Sankar presents well the idea that the path to self-realization is the path to reach higher consciousness. It is through relationships that we see the divine in other beings. It is through relationships that we pay our karmic debts, we learn, we forgive and become better versions of ourselves.

The manner in which Vivekananda expressed his love, for the family in which he was born and the universal family he lived in, is brought out very well in the book. Personal life and vedanta are not at odds with each other in Vivekananda's life and that is what makes him a "Swami", an enlightened one.

I assumed that one has to hit the pause button in life to step onto the ladder of spirituality. As I read this book I understand, being spiritual is not a one time mystic experience; It needs constant devotion and practice in the face of all kinds of worldly struggles (poverty, sickness, relationships).

Sankar did a good job teasing out these aspects and a clear picture of what made Vivekananda the man, a Swami.

A big Kudos to the author for such an effort to bring out a detailed description of Vivekananda's personal life. It's so painful to read about the mental and physical agony that Vivekananda had to go through. For someone who put forth our religion, culture and tradition to the western world, its heart breaking to read that he almost starved to death.

Nowadays, people who call themselves as saints just because they talk philosophies seem to live a rich and luxurious life whereas he lived the way a saint should.Coming back to the book, the author seems to be so fascinated that he describes the history of tea in India just because Vivekananda likes tea.Such things really tests the patience of the reader. If not for this drawback this book would have got a five star from me.A good read for those who follow Vivekananda's ideas and teachings.

Though well researched and an organised write up, the book mostly covers Swami Vivekananda’s family hierarchy in detail, his mother, his food habits, health and his last days.
Would have been good if it also included some details on his works and lectures.

The chapter on tea provides good insights on the history of tea.

The Monk As Man - The Unknown Life Of Swami Vivekananda by Shankar

On 25 February 1897 , after his return from the United States . Swami Vivekananda wrote from Culcutta to Sara bull , ' Iam almost die ....I am so , so tired I do not know wheter I would live even six months more or not , unless I have some rest . '

Swami Vivekananda and the idea of young India are inseparable. I really don't recon when this man became a youth icon of this country. Whenever I listen to his name, the first image I recall is a young man with saffron cloths, sometimes adorn turbaned, many times attached with numerous quotes. A devotee of swami Paramahansa, an ideal for student/ youth organizations, and so many other attributes. This is a usual image of Swami Vivekananda, which we all know. But, the image of Swami Ji scripted by author Sankar in this book is astonishingly different. We generally aspect of an ascetic to be disinterested in mundane things; however as per this book, swami Ji was quite indulged in homely chores even after renouncing his household life. This is the strange and exact opposite of the hermetic culture of Sanatana dharma. I am amazed how he has not been tormented for such practices by authoritative guards of dharma. Rather he is still, even more, admired lately for his teachings of Hinduism in India as well as abroad.
A good book indeed! peeps into the personal life of a celebrated hermit. Though, he was devotedly indulged in nation cause but was still had some chords attached to homely sensations.
A must-read!!!!

39 years, 5 months, and 24 days. That is how long Swami Vivekananda lived. To encompass all of him in this book would’ve been an excruciating exercise but the author Mani Shankar Mukherjee, or more commonly known as Sankar has done a wonderful job.
I admit I did not know much about his teachings or his life beyond the fact that he is considered as a youth icon in India and even though I’ve had this book since a few years, I didn’t feel like reading it. Reading biographies are certainly not my thing, but a renowned Bengali author has written this, & so it came down the shelf finally.
The author has managed to put forth Swami’s personal life in focus in a way that’s not been done before. We see the man he was before he became the saint that he is now.
Fascinating read for those drawn to the lives of celebrated saints or who enjoy biographies.

I am a disciple of Swami. There is no one who inspired me, shook my belief systems, and guided me in the right direction as much as Swami Vivekananda did. His fierce sermons on character, strength, nation-building are the very building blocks of my life. I have religiously looked up to him at every stage of my life, and never was I rendered clueless whenever I did. Swami Vivekananda is a God of a Man.

However, this book brought me to a completely new and empowering realization. In his brief stint of little less than 40 years as a human, he constantly battled with privation, abject poverty, diseases which claimed his life, and unlimited legal and psychological tribulations which followed him to his grave. After knowing those heart-rending details about his life as a man, my devotion and respect for him have grown millionfold. I have newfound respect and appreciation towards life in general.

If you are a follower of Swami Vivekananda, if you respect him for the indefatigable personality that he is, or if you ever read at least one of his innumerable quotes and are inspired by him, do read this book. The timelessness of Vivekananda doesn't come from his speeches and sermons which the world celebrates. It comes from his humbling life and the never-ending challenges he faced while performing his karma as India's spiritual ambassador to the world!

I absolutely loved this detailed account of Swami Vivekananda’s personal life and to gain insights as to how much he suffered internally and still did not deter from his path. I have always been inspired by him immensely since the time I first read the transcribed version of his famous speech in Chicago. Everyone who is a fan of Vivekananda ought to read this fascinating biography filled with anecdotes, references, sources and portraits of the people in his life too. Through this book, I am undoubtedly in awe of Swami’s mother and his disciples who have done so much for him and Ramakrishna Mission.

I have by coincidence followed the path of Swami Vivekananda this winter. I was in Kanniyakumari where Vivekananda lived a few days on a rocky island without food and water. And I visited the Sri Ramakrishna Math Chennai where a celebration was held for Vivekanada. A student explained me there about the philosophy of this school.

The biography of Vivekananda is interestingly written. Main topics are his family and the financial issues, food, tea and his health. Although he apparently has not had an easy life, he has become very wise.

Unfortunately it was not written much about his philosophy and what he did for India. I am eager now to know more about him.

It gives immense personal touch while reading. Author has very deep study and had given very unknown aspect of Swami. His life is example of what can be achieved in 39 Years 5 months life. He has introduced Hinduism to west. He had deep love for his mother and as a monk he could not renounce completely the attachment for his mother. My take away is being fearlessness and ability to give even though you have very little to offer. Must read.

The man is a legend. No disbelief or questions on that from my side. But this book in particular, may be diving deep into Swami's life, has been unable to grasp my attention. It is mostly due to the repetitive writing style. the writing gets too repetitive to and fro into his life for the same situations, it really loses your attention. Hence the 3 Stars.

Before you read this read, you need to know about Swami Ji. The author jumps here and there for a reason. The author presents facts about Swami Ji with proper references. I would definitely recommend this book.

This book has covered all the aspects and periods of Swamiji life and enlightened us and helped us to know him as a human being what were his likes and dislikes, his interest and knowledge. I am thankful to the writer for giving us such a wonderful book.

A well-researched book by Shankar on the wandering mystic’s personal life. The book is an elaborate work of research on Swamiji’s love for his mother and family, financial constraints, love for food, and his health problems. The author brings into the book a number of citations from Swamiji’s letters to his mother, gurubhais, friends, disciples, admirers, etc. His love for his mother, even after renouncing his family to become a saint, is something which has to be followed by today’s young generation. It was a different experience to read through the last day of his life which is ordered by slots of time. I’ve never read something like that before. The book shows the great saint in a new light. You would enjoy it if you fancy reading autobiographies and the intimate side of a person.

No one is spared the reality of life. Its amazing to read snippets from the life of an evolved soul called "Swami Vivekananda"

The books threw light on many unknown aspects of swami's life. At times Swami looked like a common man with all his troubles. But in the end it made me appreciate how much he accomplished in his short life with all his difficulties. The style of writing in the book is not upto the mark. It changes directions abruptly also the prose is not very interesting to read barring couple of chapters. But still a worth read

A good book indeed...but the information is more like a research and for a man who has already read many books on him rather than for one who is interested and has yet to know a lot. Hence a turn off for a person who is starting his journey to know the great swami but a feast for a man who has known, read and swallowed a lot about our beloved swami ji and hence will just love it. Apply your Vivek and this book will turn out to be pure Ananda!

The book, true to its name - shows the unknown side of this charismatic monk. Its certainly insightful and interesting - but somehow as the book progresses - you begin to get a feeling, something which another reviewer touches upon. Wonder if the narrative would have flown better if it was structured differently or if this was "lost in translation". But certainly a must read for those who like Indian history and want to see the other side of this unorthodox monk.
