Layers

Rate this book
His resentment towards his family sucked him into the lavish world of sugar mummies. With a taste for opulence, he finds himself pushing his boundaries and falling into a world unknown.

Will the scars from his past be a hindrance or a stepping stone?

Layers is a profound debut that scratches the surface of male fragility.

Femi the main character takes readers on a ride through past experiences and reverberating cynical thoughts, in an unravelling journey of self-discovery.

A New Age love story about romance and even more about bromance.

‘Layers’ by Aduke Adeyeye

Book review:

This novel took me on a rollercoaster I wasn’t ready for.

Firstly I want to say thank you to Aduke Adeyeye for this novel.

‘Layers’ is a novel which centres around Femi, a young, black Nigerian male who studies Law at university.

During a group holiday, Femi meets a woman called Megan, who introduces him to the world of sugar mummies. Having experienced financial difficulties whilst at uni, the lucrative nature of dates with sugar mummies lures Femi into the potential money he could be making.

That being said, this

My early thoughts as I read this were that it’s very easy to read, with the tone making things vivid and easy to visualise the plot.

I did feel at times conversations between characters felt quite lengthy, but they helped me understand the different dynamics between each character.

I really liked how Aduke Adeyeye explores the various layers of Femi’s life (ie - His relationship with women, the dynamics with his best friend Ricky, even his relationship with his parents).

Although I did want certain moments to be coloured in more depth, I wasn’t prepared for the plot twists.

(The plot twists were very much plotting and twisting).

I really enjoyed this novel and how it explores male fragility in particular.

Thank you Aduke Adeyeye 🙏🏾
