En esta monografía se editan, traducen y comentan filológicamente los cuarenta y un epigramas de Dioscórides, el último de los grandes epigramatistas helenísticos. Se trata de la primera edición independiente de su obra. La edición se basa en la lectura directa de los principales manuscritos. En el comentario se analizan cuestiones lingüísticas y de realia, prestándose especial atención a las relaciones de la poesía de Dioscórides con la tradición literaria, así como a los tópicos y temas universales.

Dioscorides’ travels as a surgeon with the armies of the Roman emperor Nero provided him an opportunity to study the features, distribution, and medicinal properties of many plants and minerals. Excellent descriptions of nearly 600 plants, including cannabis, colchicum, water hemlock, and peppermint, are contained in De materia medica. Written in five books around the year 77, this work deals with approximately 1,000 simple drugs.
