I am the author of the Alexa O’Brien Huntress and the Rebel Heart series. I write urban fantasy that is dark and gritty with a twist of romance and horror but which is ultimately about people in dark places discovering who they are and what they’re made of.

I’ve been writing since the age of 9 when I had a Christmas themed short story published in the local town paper. A lover of rock music, vampires and muscle cars, I’m a dreamer who always secretly wanted to be a rockstar.

I love to hear from readers so don’t hesitate to drop me a line.

It's not very often that I can't complete a book. Unfortunately, this one falls into that category. The story reads like it was written by an amateur who is in desperate need of a better editor. After struggling my way to page 162, I read the following sentences and had to go ahead and call it quits -
"My jaw dropped in horror. In his hand, illuminated by the glove box light, was a spare tampon that I had tossed in there in case of emergency.
"For those not so fresh days, huh Alexa?"
Yep, I was done at that point. I closed it and haven't looked back since. I'm assuming that was supposed to be funny, but it wasn't - at all.
I also had to stop at page 134 and flip back through the book to make sure that I wasn't losing my mind. Alexa says, "Power! That's all that the bastard wanted from me."
I was a little baffled by her outburst because I was certain that previous to their sexual encounter, Alexa had claimed to solely want the same thing from Arys. So I turn back to page 77 and this is what I find. - "With Arys, I didn't have a sole intention in mind. I wasn't on the prowl for someone to relieve me of moon-related desires, and I wasn't lonely. What kept me walking beside him went deeper than either of those things : Power."

This is just an example of a few of the things that bothered me. To my fellow Goodreads friends, don't let me completely discourage you from reading this book. Apparently, I am the first person to give this book one star, so maybe it just wasn't for me and you may enjoy it. After all, it does contain the three things that every book needs - vampires, shifters, and sex.

“It was starting to feel like a hair pulling, bitch slapping kind of fight.”

*Might contain spoilers*
Arys is the only reason I finished the book. He was dark, kinda evil, and dangerous, and if you know me, you know I love a bad boy. Shaz was so boring. I only felt friendship towards him and it annoyed me that he and Alexa was together. Alexa, who I had no respect for at all, annoyed the shit out of me. She was selfish and really accusing. As boring as Shaz was, Alexa didn't deserve him, and she sure as hell didn't deserve Arys' affection. I'm not sure if I'll continue with this series. I kinda want to, just because of Arys, but Alexa annoyed me so much that I'm sure I'll end up killing her in my head in the end....
“You reek of lust,” Arys commented. The fresh energy rolled off him and tantalized my senses. “What have you been doing in here without me?”

Rate: 2.5 *I loved Arys* stars.

This is the first book in what seems to be a long-running series from a new to me author. It was recommended by a fellow reader. I went ahead & gave it a chance thinking it be a good "in-between" read. FYI: The kindle version of this book is currently free on Amazon.

World Building
The world building was minimal. No info dumps to get through or massively detailed explanations revolving world dynamics. The reader learns as the story progresses. The story takes place in a contemporary world much like our current day. The general human populace is not aware any supernatural beings exist. This world is bloody & dark.

Supernatural Element
Vampires & werewolves take center stage. Other supernatural creatures exist & do make an appearance throughout this & future books in this series among them magic-wielding witches. The supernatural element is not romanticized, they are all monsters.

Characters (limited to protagonist & possible (?)love interests)
The protagonist is a young werewolf who is currently female alpha of her small pack. Prior to being attacked & turned into a wolf, she was a young magical human. Her relationship with the current alpha male is not romantic in fact it is filled with discourse & borders on hate. (This female can hold on to a grudge for years.) As a result of her unusual mix (magical human/wolf) she has abilities that assist her with her current job as a supernatural huntress.
Shaz Richardson is also a young werewolf who harbors strong feelings towards Alexa. Shaz & Alexa share an upbringing. Shaz is extremely supportive of Alexa &(IMHO)sympathetic to a fault. Alexa feels un-rationally protective of Shaz @ times it comes across to me as if she doesn’t believe he’s capable of any violence not even in self-defense. She & Shaz have a strange dynamic. Their closeness surpasses friendship but doesn’t transcend into the physical, it’s just limited to an emotional intimacy. One that has potential to expand passed what they currently share. I must confess anytime Shaz popped on the page I kept thinking him a ninny.
Arys Knight is a secretive centuries-old vampire. He, unlike Shaz, comes across as an alpha male who knows what he wants & is determined to achieve his goal. What Arys wants is Alexa & Alexa is well aware of his desires. In fact, Alexa & Arys share a magical connection one Arys wants to explore & develop. Arys feels extremely protective of Alexa & this can at times cramp the alpha females style causing tension between them.

Thoughts on writing
The plot is clearly described in the book's premise so I'll only limit my comments to pace & execution. The pace was action filled & at times confusing. Overall the mystery element was sufficiently mysterious. lol I can't really get into anything detailed due to spoilers. I will say this is not PNR. The romance element at this point seems to be a subplot. It's not the driving force of the story just an important element in the overall series arc. This book seems to be establishing a new romantic relationship dynamic. If I’m forced to label it I’d say it's a building block. This is a 1st POV. What Alexa doesn't know the reader is kept in the dark on. As Alexa learns the reader is enlightened. That's not to say the story isn't filled with hints the reader can use to guess. This book was filled with deep personal deceptions & surprising secrets are revealed that are likely more important to the overall story arc than this particular installment.

Rating
I rate this book a solid 3 stars it has great potential if the author can manage what seems to be a complex plot. This book engrossed me with its possibilities. So much so I felt I needed to get answers so I went on to book 2-4 immediately. What originally was an in-between book turned into a marathon read.

Alexa O’Brien may be a werewolf with a little something extra, but the professional huntress had a love/lust life that was a complete mess. She has an inexplicable pull to the vampire, Arys and their night of passion connects them on a mental level. He is cold, harsh and seemingly heartless.

When her pack alpha, the man she once shared her bed and her heart with needs her help, she is torn between helping and letting him deal on his own, until he reveals the real problem. Self-centered and manipulative, Raoul doesn’t have many saving graces.

Then there is Shaz, werewolf, best friend and the only man who offers his heart, not just his bed…seems like a no-brainer to me, but apparently, not for Alexa.

ONCE BITTEN by Trina M. Lee has the potential for a fabulous, dark and edgy paranormal tale, but the only character I could connect with was Shaz, and frankly, I failed to see what he saw in Alexa. Twisted story lines, some kind of creepy pasts and supernatural sexual attractions made the reading seem a little jumpy. Besides, the whole sex with lots of supernaturals has been done.

Perhaps it’s me, and as this is the first of the series, there is always a lot of ground to cover. Gritty and dark with a LOT of action, twists and dirty little secrets.

An interesting story that, unfortunately, fell flat for me. And I can't really say why. :O

-It's true there's not much world-building, but given the plot, it wasn't a must as it's a standard "world" in UF. On the other side, some magic needs some explaining.
The monsters are real and not downplayed for the audience. Vampires kills, were too (which is good).
- The heroine is a strong woman who survived tragedy both on the physical and mental "plane".

All of these should have make this book one I'd like. But, as I said, it fell flat. There was no connection to the characters, no sparks between the leading men and woman. There's no edge to the story. No real grit.

A couple of points in the story felt contrived and really unbelievable. In particular, the big reveal at the end was a pure WTF moment. It was in the eeckk category too. At the same time the heroine's reaction was in contrast with the way she was described earlier in the story. (Weirdly enough, the head vamp's action were more believable than hers. :D)

I know some readers compared Alexa to Anita Blake or Cat, the night huntress. I see no resemblance whatsoever. There's none of the rage of Anita nor the snark, humour or steam of Cat's stories. MHO, of course.

I really wanted to give this more stars. One I gave purely because that front cover is beautiful! Another star I gave because even though I found the story somewhat disjointed and lacked flow at times I liked the theme, the magic elements Alexa's struggles and with the problems the author threw at her. The third star I gave because I enjoyed the characters/personalities of those around the Alexa, yet I failed to connect with Alexa herself. I would have liked to see Shaz and Arys develop more as I felt they had more to give.

I liked the book, but I wanted to love it. I may read others in this series to see the progression in the future.

This mess is WAY too long and convoluted. Over 600 pages, this could easily have been cut into two books, or better still, lose the filler. I couldn't believe how many chapters passed after the first villain was conquered, or how many were useless. Did we really need to stop while the characters are supposed to be chasing Zoey so the author could introduce the lesbian tiger, have her hit on six female strangers just to make sure we get the point, and then show that she's interested in Alexa too? At the end I was like, oh for fucks sake, an epilogue? Plus you get whiplash from Alexa going back and forth in her positions: "I hate Raoul, he ruined my life and should be killed." "Raoul is pack, I care about him." "Raoul has to die!" or "We're not going to kill Zoey we're going to protect her." "Zoey's going to die and I'll rip her apart." She constantly contradicts herself, and from one scene to the next. I had to stop early on and read other reviews because in one scene she's talking about needing to kill Raoul if it turns out he's not just a womanizer but a murderer, too, yet in the very next scene she's watching Arys murder a woman after hooking up and she's all excited about it. Books like these prove that editors are worth their weight in gold.

I couldn't get into it. Reading it was a chore. I got halfway through it before I was literally screaming in frustration. The heroine of the book was a shallow, short-sighted hussy. The first real sexual interlude was with a poorly introduced character that I didn't even really care for enough to find attractive. The redeeming male character she was "really" in love with, I was hoping he'd run in the opposite direction, because Alexa was not anywhere near good enough for him. And Raoul was a poorly written daddy figure.

And it's TIMBUKTU, not TIMBUCKTWO. I hate to be a picky snot about things like that -- but if you're going to publish a book, please, please, google some of this stuff.

I was to sum this book up on one word it would be 'Incredible'. I actually picked this book up for free through Amazon and I am so glad that I did as I will now be following this series.

Written in first person (and a very good first person at that) from Alexa's viewpoint, the reader is able to get up close and personal with her strengths and weaknesses. We get to see her grow and stumble backwards. And I do have to say that I find Lex to be the perfect blend of kick ass and insecurities to be an intriguing and memorable heroine.

Surrounding her are equally memorable loves, lovers and friends. I would love to see what happens with more then a couple of them. Oh yes I am going to pick up the second book.

The pacing is very tight and the dialogue snappy. ONE BITTEN has to be the best werewolf urban fantasy I have had the pleasure of reading this year. I recommend it to anyone that enjoys both the paranormal and urban fantasy. I think that it will also really appeal to readers of Kelley Armstrong.

And one gentle warning. There are some sex scenes but they are not too graphic. Oh and scenes of gore that might be.

I rate this book a 4.75.

I just didn't really enjoy this book. It had enough that I was able to stick with it, but I felt like I was missing a piece of the puzzle through most of it. There were things that were happening (metaphysical powers, were powers, vampire powers) that just didn't flow with the story and should have been better explained early on in the book. It seemed like that stuff was mentioned and I was just expected to know what those powers (and consequently the results of those powers like psi balls) were without any explanation.

I found Alexa to be a confusing character. She was all over the place with her emotions and while I think she was supposed to be a complex character, that didn't translate very well. At times I found her acting like a spoiled 3 year old and that didn't mesh well with the bad ass that she was supposed to be. She just didn't flow very well.

I did like the supporting characters and Shaz and Arys were interesting. I'm not going to stick with this series to see how that all plays out, but I did find those characters to be well built.

Awesome dark vamp/were book. I have been looking for a new fab series to read and I finally found it, this is dark, delicious, sexy and wonderful. If you like Charlaine Harris and Laurell K Hamiliton you will most likely love this. It was a freebie on Amazon and I have bought the rest of the series, I absolutely loved it. It is dark like the Anita Blake books with some blood and murder.

The world building was wonderful and really worked, the characters are interesting, flawed and grows on you slowly to crawl under your skin so you fall in love with them. I love the chemistry between the 3 main characters Alexa, Arys and Shaz, it is hot and wonderful.

Alexa is a kick ass heroine, strong willed, she is ruthless and don’t whine about it even if she is somewhat uncomfortable with sides of her personality. She is cold and hot and complex and I love her.
It is also very well written and the story line is also very good. One of the best books I have read in a long time and one of the best PNR/UF series out there. I gave it 5 stars.

Got as an ebook freebie.

If one ignores the demented relationships, than I suppose it wasn't that bad. But seriously. Lets all get the hots for the guy who uses us for sex. and the guy who kills people for food because "drinking blood with out the kill is like sex without the orgasm" so she accepts and gets it that he is a murderer and it "excites the predator in her" to watch him feed/kill.

Spare me.

Other than that, the world was kind of interesting.

Imagine receiving a nicely wrapped package and you are itching to discover what lays beyond the wrapping. However, when you peel away the pretty wrapping, your excitement dims because what you uncovered pales in comparison to the outer appearance. Well, this was my experience with Once Bitten by Trina M. Lee. Not that it was a bad book; it just did not live up to my expectations.

I had purchased the e-book awhile back and when I discovered the audio was available for review, I jumped at the opportunity.

Story
The story began on a high note, which fed my need for suspense and action. However, after the first chapter the pacing slowed to the point where it felt like a chore to continue. However, at around the sixty percent mark the story took a turn for the better, which had me hankering to learn more.

I found the mystery element intriguing and the big reveal at the end was quite the shocker. It proved heart breaking for Alexa and it was at this point, I found myself sympathizing with her.

I am not sure what to make of the romantic element. Even the heroine herself seemed confused. Caught between two men, the vampire with whom she had a metaphysical connection and the werewolf who has been her best friend for years. She cannot seem to decide as to whom she wants. Then there was her ex who came to her for help as he was framed for murder. Thankfully, there was no rekindling of romantic feelings here, as that would have been too much for me to handle. Another plus, is the fact the romance was not the driving force behind the plot.

World building
The world the author created needed to better developed. Its modern world where humans are not aware that of the supernatural beings exists. There is a wide variety of supernaturals. Alexa along with her team has the job punishing rogue supernaturals. I found nothing extraordinary or fascinating about the world.

Characters
The main character, Alexa, is a werewolf and huntress who possesses physic abilities. Turned as a teenager when a rogue werewolf attacked and slaughtered her family. Currently, an alpha for her own pack, a position she does not take lightly. Despite her being a kick butt heroine, I was not her biggest fan. I say this because her actions reeked of selfishness. Most of what she did was for her benefit, which was evident in her relationship with Arys and Shaz. When it came to grudges, she was the poster child. Her penchant for holding grudges shined through her relationship with her ex.

Shaz's character did not impress me. His feelings for Alexa made
made him blind to her faults. Their bond led towards the emotional rather than physical. Frankly, I think Alexa took him for granted and he allowed her free rein to do so.

Arys is the ultimate bad boy. Loved his portrayal in the story. A centuries old, who had his share of pain and heartache. He knows what he wants and goes after it with fire in his eyes. The raw power that Alexa exudes puts her on his radar and he is determined to share that power by whatever means.

Secondary Characters.
There were a few I found intriguing and would love to learn more about them. There is Jez, the wereleopard and the mysterious Lilah. They brought some life to the story.

Narration
Sarah Puckett narrated, and she did a splendid job. She did a great job with the voices of the characters. She helped me to get through the story as I enjoyed listening to her.

Conclusion/Recommendation
The story wrapped up nicely. I received answers to the burning questions raised in this installment. Overall, I found this to be an ok read. I own book 2, so I plan to read it to see if it gets better.

I have never read a book with so many awful characters.

The heroine cheats on the wolf she's been casually seeing in the very beginning. When she has sex with a vampire they somehow end up forming a power bond that is unbreakable.
Wolf forgives her and they end up mating.
Alpha Wolf that "protected" heroine and then seduced her at age 17 is actually the wolf that murdered her parents because he "loved" her mother.
Vampire and heroine have bloody, angry sex after she discovers the truth in a letter.
Heroine's boss new all along who had murdered her parents and never intended to tell her because, "business".
Heroine agrees boss shouldn't be blamed for anything and goes back to work as usual.

The sheer awfulness of these characters is what compelled me to finish the book. It was like watching a crumbling building finally burn into a million ashes. Horrendously fascinating.

This book was a bit confusing. There was a lot going on here, with so many characters to keep track of... & the lack of world building - made this story very hard to follow at first but it's easily picked up.

Our protagonist, Alexa O'Brien was very likeable in some ways. But more then anything, Alexa annoyed me - she was one of those girls who had to have the interest of every male in the story. Boy Hopping aside, Alexa was a cool chick. She was strong, independent but not so independent that she spent half the book avoiding a helping hand.. she's a little screwed up in her head but she's battling a lot of inner demons, so you kinda gotta cut her a break. All in all, Alexa was cool... Im just glad the author drew the line at making Alexa a love interest for her lesbian partner as well...

Speaking of - Jez was awesome, a cold hearted badass & loyal to Alexa, the perfect partner & friend.
Even Kale, Kylarai & Lena were loyal, trustworthy & added a nice dynamic to Alexa's friendships... & Im very interested in who exactly Lilah is...

My #1 beef with Alexa & this entire story - Chick had too many freakin men in her life!!!

Shaz was cool & when he finally asked Alexa on a date, I smiled because it was natural & sweet. But Shaz really just strikes me as your typical good guy with a heart of gold. I wish he had been a bit more aggressive & just took what he wanted.

Arys... I like Arys. However, that's really not saying much since I always gravitate to the bad boy of the story. But Arys wasn't all bad. He was a vampire who was unrepentant in his nature & even though he did kind of use Alexa - he cared about her & loves her in his own Arys way.

Rauol was an ass but I liked his role in the overall story. He was the villain too, on some level. I can't think of him as a victim really but his entire existence wrapped everything up nice & neat, leaving every path open for new & different storylines.

This was a good story. Though there were times I was reading I was also wondering - Huh? I did actually like this story. I give it 3 Stars because I really like the characters ~ even Alexa's boy hopping self & also because Lilah piqued my interest ~ Who the hell is she???

I found this book on Amazon as a free read. As most free reads I am skeptical of whether or not it will be good or lack a plot. This is another writer who has slowly changed my views. Not only did it have plot but the feelings that the writer brought up in me were crazy. I felt, lust, hate, anger, love, sadness, and many more emotions.

The story revolves around a werewolf named Alexa who was changed when she was just a little girl who watched her parents die. She survived the change from the bite the wolf left her with. Later on in the series we find out who this wolf is and the reasons behind it. Though it's no9t till the very end of the book. I on the other hand had my suspicions throughout the book and needless to say I was right about who it was. Throughout the book there are dead lover's of her former Alpha's showing up and no one knows who is doing it. On the side of this Alexa is drawn to Arys a vampire who hold power. Their relationship is complicated as well as her relationship with pack mate Shaz.

Let me start off with saying I wish Arys was a real person if I had that type of connection with someone I would not let it go. Not ever for a wolf I thought I was in love with. No way no how. Yes he has a deep and dark past but what vampire doesn't? I mean honestly. Yes, he has his fair share of women but that is in the nature of all supernatural beings. You can tell he cares for Alexa the first time you meet him in the bar. The way he watches her, the way he wants her, not to mention the fact he always wants to come to her rescue. But because Alexa doesn't really want a relationship he is willing to back off. I mean really he couldn't get any better....

Now let me go onto Shaz, pack mate and white wolf. They have know each other for a long while. He has been in love with her from the beginning. He is a bit bland though for me. I just don;t see what she sees in him to make her want him mow that Arys. Yes, Shaz is a nice guy with a good heart and is a wolf. If it were me it would not be enough though.

Alexa, Alexa, Alexa, what am I going to do with you? She made me want to punch her so many times it was ridiculous. I can't even put into words how I feel about her because it is so mixed. I wish she would just pick one guy (arys) and put the other one out of his misery. You shouldn't string two men along. It's not nice. Frankly she is already tied to one man in more ways than one so that should be the choice!!!

I can't really go into details anymore without giving away crucial points about the characters. It would just ruin it. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the second in this series!!

OOOoooh wow! I LOVE finding new authors that are wonderful! This was a free read and now I'm going hunting for more of her work and will gladly pay for it. This was one damn good read!

Alexa O'Brien is a Werewolf and has an abundance of metaphysical magic. Arys is a Vampire with metaphysical magic that calls to Alexa, and he is attracted to her more and more each time he sees her. They eventually fall into each others arms, co-mingling their magics, each gaining a little of what the other has. But how is this going to sit with the wolf that Alexa has had a growing love for, for years? And now she has been called forward to assist her former pack alpha to help discover who has been killing the women he has slept with over the years, including Alexa. Mysteries, fun, adventure abound in this riveting look into the life and adventures of Alexa O'Brien!

And here's a little "taste" of the fun read from Trina M. Lee: “I can’t wait to sink my teeth into you.” I paused long enough to tap my bare bottom in invitation. He answered with a growl that added a spring to my step.

Conceptually done before, but then again what hasn't been done before in the supernatural genre. It could have been a lot better, but failed to bring the money to the bank in the end.
Not sure if I can put my finger on what was wrong. It seemed a little disjointed at times, which meant it didn't flow evenly. The characters were underdeveloped and that was a shame. Lee has created a strong female and male lead with a lot of potential, so perhaps that is something we will see in the next book.
Some of the sentence structure appeared to a tad off at times, perhaps missing a comma here and there.
One of the things that I felt was a complete contradiction, was the fact that the main character watches a human get drained, feels nothing and then a few pages later she is off helping individuals, who are in danger of being drained. Go figure?
However that is plot related and completely subjective to each reader.
Last but not least, I didn't think writing in first person did the book any favours.
I liked some of this authors ideas so there will possibly be a next time.

This was quite a well written story, whereby a werewolf has a mystical connection to a vampire, but is also in love with another wolf. The angst that this caused our lovely heroine unfortunately reminded me of the Anita Blake stories, where she ends up sleeping with vampires, werewolves, etc etc etc, and this seems to be heading in the same direction.
The back story was interesting - someone or something is killing the former lovers of the Alpha werewolf, and is trying to set him up - but I do feel a little leery about the rapidity that the story seemed to have been wrapped up...and has also been left open to an obvious recurring villain in future books.
I would definitely read another of this series...I just hope that she doesn't go the same way as Anita Blake and just basically spend the whole book having sex - please, keep some non-sexual storyline going on in the books!! I also have to say that, little niggle though it was, I did get distracted from the story because her hair seemed to keep changing colour from ash-blonde to dyed gold overnight!

This was a great read. I especially enjoyed that Alexa is a 20 something yesr old werewolf who was changed as a young teenager but as a girl she had a natural affinity for controlling psychic energy that continued after being bitten by a werewolf during an attack that killed the rest of her family. This is a talent that most weres do not have and is more akin to the psychic abilities of vampires. How interesting.

So we meet Arys, centuries old vampire who Alexa is drawn to by energy and power rather than love...their powers are hugely drawn to each other...but then there is Shaz, a gorgeous white werewolf who has loved Alexa for a long time but has never acted on that love...Alexa is also drawn to him for completely different reasons...comfort and love among the top of the list.

Then there are her friends and associates. I enjoyed the relationships she has with each of them. There was plenty of violence and bloodshed mixed with moments of passion and excitement. My kind of book! Come on book 2, I am ready for ya!

4,25 stars - English Ebook - I have dyslexia -
- In response to his Question, I threw my head back and looked into the sky, as if it were a dark velvet veil that had the secrets of the universe. I held my hands out before me and Just let the wolf inside break free. -
Great start of the series involving a werewolf, vampire and witches. Mix it all together and you end up with a very entertaining book like this one. If you like the paranormal this is a series I recommend.
- I stared at him with a terrorstricken expression. We had been inside one another’s minds, seen each other’s souls, but I didn’t realize the Exchange had been truely to the core. This was so not funny. - 🦋🦋🍀🍀

Ok I give this 2.5*'s because I've read better books that I only gave 3*'s to. Ok I like half of Alexa the kickass half the rest of her is annoying! I didn't like the I think the author is trying to be Laurell K Hamilton in that respect! I wish that there had been more murder mystery and less sex! The Catherine part seemed to be an add in as it had no relevance to the rest of the story! I don't think I'm going to waist my time reading anymore of these as they are too PNR for me!

Once Bitten is a great urban fantasy/ paranormal romance! This book is packed with emotions, mystery, death, and a love triangle. I loved Alexa’s snarky personality and hope that her, along with the other characters, continue to develop and grow throughout the series. Alexa’s relationships with Shaz and Arys were different, but developed very well. I can’t wait to continue this series to see where it goes!
Sarah did a wonderful job narrating this book. I was drawn in from the start and couldn’t put it down! She brought the story to life and I enjoyed the different voices that most characters had.

This was a good book. I liked how the story flowed and the writing style was easy to read. I would recommend if you like vampires, werewolves, and the paranormal romance type books.

Very good start to this UF world. A bit reminiscent of the Guardian Witch and Kate Daniela series. Not as good, but if your jonesing for something like them as I often am then this might be a good series for you. Like the main characters. It has good action. Good world building so far.

This was a reread for me, because I wanted to figure out how the author wrote 12 more books following the point where I just couldn’t handle it anymore and still have people reading them. I didn’t expect to give this book 4 stars. This draws a lot of inspiration from other big hitting series in the genre. Namely Anita Blake. Lots of Anita Blake inspiration.

Once Bitten follows Alexa O’Brien through what was a few bad weeks. One of the few negatives of Once Bitten was just how much there was going on. The storylines kind of crowded each other out. There were two major threads that ran between them: the relationships and the big happenings.

The relationship in this series is… not one most people would enjoy, I think? This is 100% a series that thrives on a love triangle. Alexa is a person of two halves, the wolf half and the magic half. And they both want different people. Arys is the vampire of the series. He is a Power, others fear him, he is a bad guy. And Arys and Alexa are dynamite together. After a night of sex initiated by how good the power between them felt, they have managed to tie themselves metaphysically to each other. With some nasty downsides. Shaz is the werewolf. He is kind and sweet and has always been there for Alexa. He is the “emotional” love for Alexa. Over the course of the book they fight surprisingly little over Alexa, mostly because of Arys’ understanding of Alexa, and not Shaz’s lack of heat. ((I’m like 90% rereading this series to see if they ever become a thruple because I needs it.))

As for the doings of the book there were a lot. There was Arys and Alexa coping with their new consequences. A lot of that. Repeatedly. But there was also the fact that someone is killing Alexa’s ex-hookups and keeps trying to get her to help him. It was not an amicable breakup. And I think there was another thing. I swear I just finished this book an hour ago and I can’t even remember. Alexa just kept having to deal with things and it all just became a bit much.

Overall, not a bad start to a series. And I genuinely never thought I would say those words. Pleasantly surprised. Just a little disgruntled that the ending was left so open and unfinished.

Alexa O'Brien is a werewolf who has vampire skills and magical abilities not normal to her species. Her job is that of a huntress. She assassinates those who break the rules of justice for the paranormal society and she takes on jobs for jilted lovers. For a while Alexa has avoided any romantic contact with a powerful vampire, Arys Knight as well as any romantic entanglements with one of her pack mates and good friends, Shaz.
Alexa's entire family was wiped out when she was sixteen. She was the sole survivor but was turned into a werewolf. Later, she was taken in by the Alpha Raoul who then became her lover despite the 16 year difference in age. Raoul did not love her, she was just a playtoy and Alexa holds a grudge against him for his callousness. Then, several of Raoul's exes' are found dead and he calls upon Alexa to help him. He is not pleased because it brings memories to mind she would rather not revisit.
Alexa hooks up with Arys, the vamp only to discover that their joining occurs in more than one way. She not only is physically attracted to him but she is also magically joined to him. She experiences his memories and he hers. He develops were tendencies and she develops vamp. Oh, it is so confusing. Let's not even mention that her best friend, Shaz is hurt over her affair with the vamp although they had never been together. Alexa feels guilty and confused.
Various people have deadly secrets that will be revealed and must be dealt with putting so many lives at risk. Will Lexi come out on the winning end of the deal or will this be the end of her? While I enjoyed this book, I have said before and I will say it again, "I DO NOT LIKE LOVE TRIANGLES IN ADULT BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I tolerate it in YA because teens fall in love every other week. However, I feel adults should know what or who they want. This really ruin the read for me. So, at this point, I am not sure if I will go on with the series. I will have to really think about it.

Love it

Loved every bit of it! Kept me wanting to continue reading.... I’m addicting! Already read the entire series and re-reading them all now. Found that it’s just as good reading it for the second time!
