'We have gone so far down the slippery slope of progress , that we all now need to call a halt. We are slaves to technology, we are polluting our planet at an alarming rate, and too many of our leaders are concerned with lining their own pockets rather than enabling hardworking citizens to thrive. Even more astounding is the emerging evidence that responsibility for the glitch lay, not with cyber-terrorists, not with the #isolators, but with our own government . Friends, there is a way forward ...' Robin FitzWilliam, summer 2025 Set after the events of the glitch, Miranda investigates who is behind the series of attacks on national infrastructure in a race against time to prevent a total lockdown of technology. Her arch enemy, Robin, a misfit who is bold enough to speak out, and who lures mavericks into making an ethical stand to challenge the status quo, might be her only hope. Now, framed with murder and on the run from the authorities, Miranda is determined to get as deep into Robin's campaigns as she can, to live and breathe Robin, not only to be her shadow, but to be her. Meanwhile, #isolate is gaining momentum, playing out in the countryside and the cities against the backdrop of a looming general election. An ingenious algorithm is used to promote #Spoiler : 'Legitimately spoil your ballot paper and be counted. Make a difference!' How is it all linked? But more importantly, who can she trust?
This highly relevant dystopian thriller drew me in from the outset. The author has a beautiful way with words and descriptions. She set the scene well and I could imagine the places mentioned. Having not read the first one it didn't matter as it made perfect sense on it's own. Great ending.
Chris Malone’s first book in the #Glitch Trilogy was Robin’s story, #stoptheglitch, focussing on Robin and her companions responding to technological disaster, scheming governments and cyber terrorists in a post-pandemic world. #Isolate is Miranda’s story after a few years have passed. An innovative, alternative but hidden community network and election voting campaign threatens the control of a corrupt government. Who did #stoptheglitch? I like the more in-depth and nuanced study of the characters of Robin, Miranda and the others. Instead of a goodie-baddie dichotomy, we discover that Miranda and Robin have complex motivations and intentions, like real-world people. When Miranda is asked to decide between the competing influences in her life, who will she support and at what cost? The story is exciting, involving and non-stop as Miranda makes in-the-moment decisions (both good and bad) and decides who she can trust. At the end both Poppy and Nathan make a significant impact. The themes of opposing the vested interests of politicians and of forming counter-cultural, more environmentally-friendly ways of living continue as the protagonists cling onto the hope that individuals can make a difference. It’s a great read!
I enjoyed reading #stoptheglitch and have been looking forward to #Isolate, the second (standalone) book of the dystopian, political #Glitch trilogy. #Isolate is set in the lead-up to the 2024 UK General Election. It describes a climate of distrust of the Government and a desire to move towards a more sustainable existence using tactics designed to disrupt the voting process. The activists, whose ranks are divided, communicate using innovative technology, including ‘okes’, which allow telecommunications outside the established networks. The story unfolds against the background of the glitch, a series of technological interruptions that temporarily bring the nation to a halt. The source is uncertain; some suspect the Government is responsible; others attribute it to cyber-terrorists or Chinese interference. #Isolate is told through the eyes of Miranda, an activist who appeared in the first book in a secondary role to its main protagonist, Robin. Miranda is less secure than Robin. Much of the plot develops through Miranda’s internal thought process and deliberation. Despite this, the reader is drawn along by the pace of the narrative. Towards the end of the book, several twists lead to surprising revelations. The final chapter sets up the third volume of the trilogy to be published in 2023.
