Gathers unusual and little known statistics about Americans, from the one percent who are color-blind to the ninety-nine percent of American households that have at least one radio
Daniel Evan Weiss is the author of four novels: The Roaches Have No King, Hell on Wheels, Honk if You Love Aphrodite, and The Swine’s Wedding. His most recent book is non-fiction, The Magic of Middle-aged Women: Romance, Sex, Deviance--Freedom.
Picked up this book at a garage sale, not realizing its 25 years old. Needless to say, being 25 years old its quite outdated. Numerous facts... Cancer being cured by 2000, for example, are in desperate need of updating. I suppose that's the problem with a book like this - with all of the facts and stats, it's hard to keep them up to date with the changing American culture.
It was still fascinating to see exactly how the world lived in 1988, the year I was born. I was a blast from the past and I enjoyed numerous facts - although many of the seems to revolve around AIDS, and the church.
Overall this book was an interesting read and ok considering its length and reading time. Although, I would still like to see an updated version with current facts.
I give this book a 6/10, mostly because its so far outdated.
Sure it's outdated, but this still serves as a fascinating snapshot of American attitudes in the late 1980s. I do think it would be very interesting if someone were to do an updated version of this concept, as a way of looking at how attitudes have or have not changed in the 25 years since this book came out. Overall, it's a fun, quick read, but Weiss would go on to do much better things as an author.
