With this captivating narrative, you will explore all that made Egypt her powerful pharaohs; the mystery of her hieroglyphs; her unique art, pervading religion, and towering pyramids. But you will also discover the stories of her neighbors, far and near, as you read about the secrets of a chalk horse and giant stones in Great Britain, the puzzle of a vanished people in the Indus Valley, the charging bull that the Ancient Minoans could not leap over, why writing on turtle shells assured a lasting dynasty in Ancient China, and much more.
Excellent book about ancient history. It covers Egypt as well as several other civilizations of the time. Good for all age levels, even adults. And it is written from a Christian perspective.
If you are looking for a decent ancient history book with a living books feel this a good selection. I really enjoyed learning about the many ancient cultures that rose and fell while Egypt went through its many dynasties. However, the chapters were long for a once a week reading. We ended up reading a little every day. Also, there were times when my 2nd and 1st grader struggled with the time jumps when we discussed the hieroglyphs, Rosetta stone, and the mummies. I think it would be great for an older audience. Maybe 4th and up?
This was such a cool book, lining up the Ancient Egyptians with the other civilizations that lived alongside them in antiquity. I especially loved the stories of the more contemporary explorers and the fascinating discoveries they made of the ancient ruins and artifacts that had lay buried for centuries. Really well told and a delight to read aloud.
I really liked this book as a history spine, but the readings are just a little beyond the 8- and 6-year old. They are connecting much more readily with some other books, so I will select a few chapters from this one this year, and I think that 3 years from now when we are back in ancient times it will be just right. =)
I would rate this a book for middle schoolers but extremely enjoyable. The language is easy to comprehend and picture the civilizations mentioned in the book. The only drawback is bouncing from one civilization to another but it does keep the Information fresh and relevant.
Possibly even 5 stars. Solid history spine. The chapters are relatively short and engaging. I like that they included pictures of the things that they talked about to save us from having to look up everything. After reading SOTW twice, this was a good break.
4.5 rounded up, but we enjoyed this one. Clear and interesting stories about Ancient Egypt and what else was happening around the world during that time.
Very much enjoyed this fascinating look into ancient civilizations. The book gives you enough to pique your interest and make you want to go digging for more information. Several times, I finished a chapter and hurried to Wikipedia to do more research.
