Everything changes, even when time stands still

Elisabeth Belliveau spent two years in Amiskwaciwâskahikan / Edmonton social distancing in a 680-square foot condo. Fueled by increased espresso consumption, food delivery, and twenty-year-old Cindy Crawford workout videos, Belliveau attends endless online meetings and teaches so many virtual art classes that they all start to blend together. But even in pandemic times, life goes on, and Belliveau soon finds herself navigating much bigger challenges--like pregnancy and tenure.

In CONDOLADY, award-winning artist Elisabeth Belliveau considers the moments that make up our lives--and sometimes change them completely.

Seeing my home town as the main character in this story made me so happy. There’s a huge nostalgia factor for me in reading this book and seeing all the scenes of the city that have left their mark on me beautifully, realistically portrayed in the page is something that really resonated with me. The way in which this book was written also captured this very specific energy of the pandemic where you feel isolated and trapped that forces you to notice the things in your immediate surroundings. You get familiar with the signs hanging from balconies, or the way passersby look with the skyline behind them. I felt like this book was very evocative of a specific place in time for me, and I appreciated that. Overall, this was more drawing heavy with less text than the graphic novels I usually read, but I really appreciated the art and I hope to see more from Elisabeth Belliveau.
