Des os dans les Bégonias (Jolis Jardins Maudits)

Rate this book

The second book of the Lovely Lethal Gardens series has Doreen working on Mack's Mother's Garden. Her fur friends accompanied her and add humor to the tale. Mugs find a stray bone in the begonia beds. Again Mack has another cold case to investigate. Doreen takes the animals to Man's retirement home for add humor. Man sets up little bets and often wins the bet. Thaddeus is adapt to picking up what people say and repeating at times. Doreen is slowly going three the contents of the house and finding cash among them allowing her to buy food. The animals have minor roles so there are laughs before Doreen finds the answer to the bones and put herself in grave danger. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND SERIES.

Book 2 of the Lovely Lethal Gardens series. Cold case bones/body parts being found. Hand in the creak, foot in the begonias. I am really enjoying this series. Fun characters. Enjoyable animal trio. The right balance of humor, romance, and mystery. A keeper that leaves you wanting more.

Another cold case solved!
Doreen and menagerie, Nan and the handsome detective Mack Moreau make this cozy mystery series a cute, delightful, funny read!

The second in this series and I enjoyed this one more than the first. Doreen is still finding cold case clues and bodies. A few more coincidences that I like in mysteries but Doreen is just so darn cute. She is still frustrating Corporal Mack and that is fun too. I like her naivete about middle-class life and the mystery is entertaining.

This book was better than the first. The animals are great, Nan is growing on me and so is the Doreen and Mack. Doreen is helpless as a baby operating basic tasks in the home, having grown up and been in a marriage where she was catered to. Now things as simple as pizza is a revelation to her. Now living in the home given to her by her Nan, she seems to have an affinity for finding (well with the help of her pets) bones and trying to solve cold cases, much to the consternation of Max.

Discovering bones in the garden of her new home in Kelowna didn’t get Doreen’s new life off to the right start or put her in the good graces of Corporal Mack. She is ready to embrace a new beginning in her friendship with Mack by starting to care for his mother’s begonias.

It becomes a case of déjà vu when she finds bones in his mother’s begonias and she and her motley crew of animals are on the case once again.

This is a fun cozy mystery that doesn’t disappoint.

Finding more than bones in unexpected places…

There really aren’t enough adequate words to describe the Lovely Lethal Garden series!
Except… OMG… I LOVE IT!! She makes you want to laugh and cry out loud all at the same time. That lady has back bone, heart and such a positive outlook no matter how bad things are looking.

It’s a serious business finding dead bodies and bones in your first week in your new home.
It’s fairly disconcerting that you can’t even use basic kitchen appliances
It’s how does one earn money that’s badly needed?
Do we mention those loveable animals that seem to scope out trouble all on their own!!… you wonder at times who the real sleuths are…I’m almost convinced they were human at one point in time…

You’d think with life settling down in her second week, things would be much easier. This is Doreen… Let’s go for broke and find more bones in unexpected places… Welcome to Doreen’s second week and see how it unfolds in BONES IN THE BEGONIA’S. It would seem that trouble loves to find her. Poor Mack has his hands full…

Another aspect of this series that I love, is the interaction between all of the characters. Even though their is a certain chemistry it’s subtle but simmering. Time will tell just how this exasperating woman will fully affect Mack’s entire life. They are all in for a wild ride.

Dale Mayer continues to weave her magic with this series. It offers readers mystery but loads of fun and hilarity at the same time. It’s a wonderful weekend page-turning escape to brighten your day and solve a mystery, Doreen style. I highly recommend this new series. If you love mysteries and humour this book delivers…

I look forward to seeing the next adventures that Doreen faces…

This is book takes place a few days after the end of the first book in the Lovely Lethal Gardens series. Doreen’s life is just getting back to normal after solving 2 murders and a cold case, when Mack asks her to help save the begonias in his mother’s garden. Doreen discovers why the begonias are not doing well, after removing some of the bulbs she finds a wood box with human bones. Just like in the first book her dog, cat and parrot and humor to the story. They help find evidence and the parrot seems to understand and respond to the conversations taking place in the room. As much as Mack tries to keep Doreen out of his investigation he knows that she’s going to help him with or without his support. I think what makes this story good are the interactions between Mack, Doreen, and her animals. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Bones in the Begonias is an entertaining cozy mystery that stands out for the peculiar and brightly defined cast of characters, the witty dialogues and the irresistible trio of pets playing an ever growing role in the story.
While the protagonists of this second book are obviously the same as the first one, this story is enriched by a brand new group of secondary characters.
Doreen, the heroine, is striving to build a solid ground for her new life in the village of Kelowna. She faces with a positive attitude the challenges of being on her own for the first time in her life, accepting with a smile the many disappointments, without being too worried about her complete lack of money.
Her friendship with Mack is becoming a solid partnership, with him helping her finding a job and Doreen providing unasked for but very valuable assistance in solving old cold cases.
Nan, Doreen grandmother, is her loving, resourceful, slightly mysterious self, surrounding her niece with love and care, plus precious insights on the local gossip related to the mysteries she attempts to solve.
The three pets have grown to a full fledged family for Doreen, demanding care, offering solace, and actively helping in her investigations.
With Bones in the Begonias, the author succeeds in making both the story and the characters evolve, while maintaining the fast paced rhythm and lively dialogues of the first book. The result is a light hearted, pleasant, stand alone novel that captivates its readers leaving them longing to hear more about the adventures of Doreen and her pet’s family.

I was kindly provided this book as an ARC; in exchange for my honest review. If you’re a loyal reader of this authors books; I feel I must warn you that this book (a second in her new series) is VERY different from anything else she’s written before. It’s not a bad thing; there is zero romance/heat, minimal curse words (I’d allow my young teen/pre-teen) to read this book.

Some may find it to be a little “young,” but as with most of Ms. Dale’s work, it is well written and a fast, easy read.

Doreen Montgomery moves to Kelowna (BC) to live in her Grandma Nan’s home after a nasty split from her husband of 14 years.

Her her first week in her new home she “discovered “ a few dead bodies (with the assistance of her new family; her Basset Hound Mugs, her Grandmas pets a cat named Goliath and a vocal African Grey Parrot named Thaddeus).

She meets RCMP Detective Mack Moreau and seems to always be in his way while playing amateur detective.

In this book, Mack hires her to repair his mother’s garden, and they find bones in the begonias. Another morbid, but silly mystery ensnares Doreen and Mac to a somewhat expected conclusion.

This is an entertaining and somewhat silly story. The next book in the series will be Corpse in the Carnations.

Doreen Montgomery lives with a menagerie of animals in Kelowna, British Columbia after a split with her husband of 14 years. She hopes to get her life back on track instead she gained notoriety after finding a body and helping to solve a cold case with Corporal Mack Moreau. Now she just wants to get on with life and garden whist building the friendship she has with Mack. Instead when she starts to care for his mother's begonias she finds more bones and despite Mack's intention to work it out on his own she can't resist solving it. The question is can she solve it whilst keeping the details quiet from the incorrigible Nan who seems to run a book on pretty much everything!

This was a charming mystery that certainly kept me hooked as we followed the clues with Doreen as she solved this new murder. I loved the easy friendship between Doreen and Mack which gave lots of promise of something in the distant future but was mostly about friendship and support. Nan and the animals were very real as you read it and I could feel and imagine everything as it was happening to her. Well written I loved this story and was almost sad when she worked out who it was. I can't wait to read the next one.

I love this series! I start off laughing, and then enjoy every word as the mystery plays out. I love Doreen, she doesn't know how smart and strong she really is. Her pets are atrociously amusing. Thaddeus is the absolute best with the words he keeps picking up and Mugs and Goliath have become quite the pair.

In the first book, Mack asks Doreen if she would work on his mother's garden. She is unable to give it the attention it needs and she's worried about her begonias. They don't seem to be doing well. This book opens with them going to work on that garden.

I'm not sure if I feel sorry for Mack or not. Doreen listens but doesn't, and she has more than her fair share of problems with the house and money.

Her struggles are real and when her pets find more stuff at the creek she delves even deeper in to the mysterious disappearance of a young girl.

I couldn't put this book down. Between Doreen's comments to her stove and her pets. Add in Mack's frustration with her investigating and you will be intrigued, laughing and turning the pages.

There is definitely an attraction between these two, that I'm sure her Nan wants to see come to fruition as well.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Doreen is an idiot! She is so stupid, she signed her divorce papers and took nothing, even though her rich husband was having an affair. Yet, we are expected to believe that she can solve a mystery! Not only that, she complains about being almost destitute and instead of looking for work she spends her time researching, and investigating murder. This incompetent twit can’t even turn on a stove but can find volumes of information on the internet for her snooping. Maybe she could look on the internet to learn how to cook an egg! In one breath she states how she supervised all the work on the gardens, in married life, but has never stepped inside of a kitchen. She was the hostess for all of her husband’s social events!
There were so many things that seemed ridiculous, but I didn’t bother to write it all down while I was reading. In chapter 25 there is a big error. Lansdowns were the poor family, but it says Betty Mile’s father, who was a Lansdown, owned a jewelry store. It was Hannah Theroux’s father that owned the jewelry store and claimed the insurance. Stephen Lansdown was hired to steal the jewelry.
I like cozy mysteries and I realize they are on the silly side, but I can’t tolerate the stupidity of this series.

What a truly delightful series this is, so refreshingly different. This book follows straight on from the first one, just recovering from the bodies found in her own garden Doreen agrees to help Mach with his mums. Oh the surprises turn up in the most surprising of places and times, at least she isn't alone this time though. I love the humour and the banter between her and Mach and Nan, the fun of the three animals all going everywhere Doreen goes. I can picture the foursome quite clearly going on their strolls through the neighbourhood or along the creek, I have a ginger tabby myself and imagine her following me up the road. They are all three full of mischief, helping Doreen get into all sorts of situations, but they all step up when needed to protect their human. This is very different and a lot lighter, despite bones and bodies, than Dale Mayer's other series but just as fabulous and interesting. Since this one was already released I didn't even hesitate to one click and jump straight into reading it, same with the third book up which I'm starting tonight, I also pre ordered the rest of the series. Absolutely loving it.

No good deed goes unpunished...
Seamlessly transitioned from Arsenic in the Azaleas, Bones in the Begonias is the second book in Dale Mayer’s Lovely Lethal Gardens series. Doreen and Mack are in his mother’s garden assessing the state of her flowers. A bit concerned that the begonias are not looking well in the space they currently occupy, she decides to transplant them to a more hospitable location. You guessed it…nestled in the roots of the begonias is a bone. Is it human? Do we need to ask?

Of course, the neighborhood is still upset with Doreen over the whole azalea incident, there are people still gathered at her driveway, and a local journalist prowling her property uninvited and seeking an exclusive interview.

If you’re expecting a spoiler here, not going to happen. Just assurance that it will be chaotic, interesting, and funny. Mack, Mugs, Thaddeus, and Goliath are great, and Nan is her sweet, funny, and very determined to get insider information to launch the next betting pool. You have to read the book for the nitty gritty details. Love these!

Bones in the Begonias by Dale Mayer
Lovely Lethal Gardens Series Book Two
Doreen Montgomery's move to her grandmother's home has been an interesting one. She is already well-known in the small town. After all, finding bodies buried in your backyard is big news. Thankfully life is settling down. There are less people hanging out in front of her home.

And then...she goes to help work in Detective Mack Moreau's mother's garden to make some money. And gardening is the only thing Doreen knows how to do well—unless you count finding bodies.

This story is told from Doreen's point of view only. Along with her dog, Mugs, and the cat and bird she's inherited with the house her grandmother has given her, Doreen can't seem to stay out of Mack's way. She's keeping the police force in this small-town busy. Not to mention the gossip mill. Great suspense and humor.

Great Mystery and Characters

Oh my, what a great cold case. Doreen is working on her detective friend's mother's garden when she uncovers human bones. Just a hand and arm. Doreen loves solving puzzles, and it looks like the bones are from a cold case dating back 29 or 30 years ago. The bones were from a missing 16 year old girl. This was a fabulous who done it. Such a shame, and sordid situation. But the book is not just about the mystery, but the people. Doreen is in process of a divorce and her husband is cheating her out of her rightful due. Doreen was high society, now she is penniless and dependent on what her grandmother is providing her. Her grandmother, Nan, is a very interesting character who treats life as an adventure. The love between Doreen and Nan is magical. Doreen is slowing piecing her life back together, with help from Nan and new friends. The book and series is well worth reading for cozy mystery fans. Real sleuthing is outlined step by step, day by day. And none of it is boring. I am plowing through these books.

Oh wow I devoured this one in one sitting.
This book is continuing Doreen the bone lady journey with her quirky cat, dog and parrot to find who she really is after an ugly divorce and with her keep tripping over dead body or human bones, this is one heck of a journey. And this book starting with bones in the begonias, so it's another cold case mystery to solve with sexy Corporal Mack.
This book really fun to read, with unique characters that always make me laugh and mystery that keeps me turning the pages, I love this book, although sometimes Doreen recklessness a bit annoying and make me rolling my eyes and smack my head, but that's so totally Doreen, so yeah I still love this book.

If you're a cozy mystery fan, this book is perfect for you.

This is the second installment of this series and it is still amusing. Doreen's husband of 14 years dumped her without any money or belongings except her old car, her Prada suits(which she longer has any need for) and her dog Mugs. She moves into her grandmother's house and inherits Nan's cat Goliath and her talking parrot. She meets Mack right after the bodies start being dug up and he is always there to help her out. Trouble and mysteries seem to follow Doreen around. But she loves solving the case. All the while Nan is urging her on and placing bets at the nursing home on when Doreen will solve the case and anything else Nan can get her cohorts to bet on.

This is a very different series from the books that Dale Mayer usually writes.

This is a very lighthearted, amusing series.

As Doreen Montgomery continues her life alone with the exception of her menagerie, Mugs, Goliath and Thaddeus, she continues to be unable to stay out of trouble much to the chagrin of Mack a detective with the RCMP.

Doreen is often funny but not always in a humorous way. She has a way of finding items leading to a cold case and often it's body parts of missing people.

I love the banter between Doreen and Mack.

Doreen continues to struggle with the gas stove in the house her grandmother left for her, not that she knows how to cook even if she could get the black monster to work. So she has the gas stove replaced with an electric one but still doesn't know how to cook.

Between Doreen and Mack they solve the cold case of bones in the begonias but at the close of this book she seems to have stumbled on yet another mystery in the form of the sound of gunshots.

Thank you Book Sprout and Dale Mayer for the arc. I voluntarily leave my review. I read all things Dale Mayer. I am not a cozy mystery fan, so giving it 4 stars should tell you cozy mystery lover what a fast clipped, sometimes funny, sometimes over the top this cozy mystery is. I didn't really appreciate Mack in book 1, but he is becoming more fleshed out and less of an ass-hat. I really enjoy when its Mack her friend as Doreen says. I like that Doreen is quick and thinks outside the box and I love her bonding with Nan after years apart. Thaddeus (parrot) Goliath (cat) and Mugs ( dog) are her partners in crime delving, by accident of course, into the cold cases. I would read this with my grandmother, and my child (of which I have neither by the way) without hesitation and would enjoy discussing it with them. Bring on the carnations now!

You know what, this series is starting to grow on me. I had a few teething problems with the first book, Arsenic in the Azaleas, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to put the time into a new series if I was having issues with one of the characters - I’m looking at you Mack - however, #2 changed my mind.

I love how Doreen is handling being the rather infamous new resident, and I adored her travelling caravan of pets that follow her as she traipses around the town. Mugs is a sweetie, I would love to own Goliath, and Thaddeus is just waaay too smart. Mack is still an insensitive asshat at times, but their friendship is nice, and I’m mellowing. Nan is such a dear, and I love that Doreen is able to visit her all the time.

A fun cosy mystery that I fancy will end up on my ‘must buy’ list.

Bones in the Begonias

WOW! Another exciting and funny story. This story is about Doreen finding an ivory box of a missing teenager and then finding bones of said missing teenager. Doreen is on another intriguing quest to find out who murdered poor Betty and then dismembered her body. Doreen and her pets find all kinds of interesting information from her grandmother and she figured out who the murderer is. Mack is thoroughly frustrated with Doreen whenever she gets involved one of his cases but it seems to me that he is appreciative of her help. I love these two when they go head-to-head with each other. Doreen solves another cold case in the end and stumbles upon a more current murder - the start of the next book. You really have to read these books in order as they mesh together. FANTASTIC job Dale! I would recommend this book. On to the next book.

This is a 6 book series (for now; likely more will follow). Books 1 and 2 are self contained (no cliff hangers) but I would suggest starting with Arsenic in the Azaleas. The books are written in a classic style -- hints and lots of twists and turns. Doreen, fairly new to a small town, is getting quite a reputation for herself. She helped the police solve a cold case (with several bodies) and has stumbled upon yet another, more or less. Doreen is ably assisted by her 3 pets (a parrot, a basset hound, and a Maine Coon cat). She is also a lady who is finding out who she is and discovering her strengths as she embraces her soon-to-be divorce status.

This is another wonderful book in this cozy mystery series. Doreen continues with her struggle to start over and rediscover who she is after her marriage fails. Who knew?! She was such a magnet for mysteries that won't stay buried. The story is engaging, fun, cute, and suspenseful. I love the slow simmering attraction and chemistry between Doreen and Mack, the long suffering detective she aides along the way. If you've read book one you should remember her hilarious pets (which are back) and if not wait until you discover these scene-stealers! I also was very happy to see Nan, Doreen's Gram make a return because she adds so much to the book. Simply excellent! I'm already looking forward to book three. This is my freely posted, frank review.

This series is so funny, plenty of drama, and lots of bones, and cold cases that Doreen just has to solve to the chagrin of the local RCMC's Mack Moreau. What is a person to do. She loves gardening and apparently killers love to hid their misdeeds in the garden. Throw in Thaddeus an african grey parrot with the habit of picking up stray sentences and repeating them at the worst time possible, a cat named Goliath that loves to trip you up and a basset hound named Mugs with a penchant for digging up things he shouldn't. What is not to love about a comedy of errors resulting in solving a cold case. Hopefully I have not given out any spoilers.

I'm not sure what prompted this author to take on Cozy Mysteries but I'm glad she did. This is the second book in a new series. As Doreen becomes enthralled with becoming an amateur detective, she seems to get plenty of experience as she again finds bones relating to an old unsolved case. She was going to help her 'real' detective friend with his mom's garden where she found these bones. The story is great and the banter between Doreen and her three pets (Mugs, Goliath and Thaddeus) is priceless. Thaddeus, the parrot, who repeats everything he shouldn't, Goliath, the cat, who is every bit a cat and Mugs, her dog, who is lovable as well as he adores her and pretends to be a guard dog. The relationship between Doreen and Mack is also well done. What can I say? I'm hooked.

This is such a fun read with captivating characters and a well-crafted mystery that I enjoyed from the first page to the last. I absolutely love Doreen Montgomery, a gardener who becomes known as the "bone lady" because she keeps finding old cold case bones, and her funky family that includes her basset hound Mugs, a blue parrot Thaddeus, a gigantic Maine coon cat Goliath, and her grandmother Nan. I really like her dynamic and chemistry with RCMP Corporal Mack Moreau who hires her to clean up his mother's garden and she discovers a set of bones and another mystery to solve. Bones in the Begonias is a must-read for cozy mystery fans. I received an advance reader copy of this book from Booksprout and this is my voluntary review.
