When fate conspires against you and gives you three loves to choose from, what do you do? What if you make the wrong choice?

Shara is a healer, raised and trained from childhood until her unique gift manifests itself. When she gains the rank Journeyman she is hired to serve as the court healer for the barbaric kingdom of Glendor.

Untrained for war, she is thrust unmercifully into its bloody arms when the kingdom is invaded. Ordered by her king to the front lines to tend the wounded, she is forced to flee when their camp is attacked. Happening upon a wounded soldier in the forest, every mile back to the capital is a struggle, and breaking the healer’s code, she falls in love with her charge.

If Shara thought that to be the least of her troubles, the appearance of a fierce warrior captain who appoints himself her protector, teaches her differently. Trouble comes in threes at the appearance of a former love and fellow healer. Faced with decisions of the heart and the sudden manifestation of her gift, there is little room for anything else to go wrong. Or at least that’s what Shara thought.

my thoughts

cover: it is a pretty cover, not much at first but when you get immersed in the story. You like it better at least for me. love the green and the sunlight. I think its a scene from the book.

book: received this from miss Wylie for review. this is Jen's young adult debut novel. Her writing was enjoyable and very emotional. when i read the first pages. WHAMM!! That scene was intense. i was hooked. this story takes place on a middle age -ish alternated planet or earth. the places and countries had a celtic feel to it especially glendor.

Shara short for Sharandar Lynn of Shoredirch(home country) is a 16 year old healer, healers are gifted with magic that they use to help others. but here's still dormant. It’s sacred, and she comes from a land that is far different from Glendor, where she’s been summoned to during a war. she meets a wounded soldier who can't speak. There is not mushy love but believe able romance with a lot of action. She gradually falls in love with him

other books have a love triangle with team A and team B. The 3 dudes feel for her, Shara. i equally felt the love between David , the wounded soldier. Shara and Tirel, her long distance relationship and Dric older cousin of David who Shara only sees as a close friend.

i adored the backstory of the main characters , their family ,friends and countries. there was no info overload.loved all of the relations family ,friends , more than lovers. it was in diverse pov. i think at least 5 povs. was not annoying for me.
i love that Jen did not sugarcoat the more mature themes. there's a lot of violence ,war. this is a upper YA book maybe 16, 17 i think.

if you get it hope you'll enjoy it. i did.

favorite quote[s] :

"So long as the sun and stars shine above and light your way, the stones and earth beneath give you strength, the waters of lake and sea give life; remember your pledge to each other. "By the life which courses within your blood and the love which resides within your hearts, take each other by your hands, your hearts, and your spirits, to be your chosen one. Live and love without sin or shame, for naught can exist in the purity of your love for each other.

Okay, I'll admit, I'm not a fan of romance books (waits for cries of outrage to die down)
I will tell you this, I'm a super huge fan of Jen Wylie's. It's why I picked up Sweet Light against every fiber of my body saying, "Don't read a romance novel! You'll be one of THOSE people."
I'm glad I didn't listen. The aspects of romance in the novel actually complemented the story rather than overwhelming it with gush gush. The characters were incredibly believable. The scenarios were absolutely riveting. And best of all, the whole world Ms. Wylie has created felt real. The basic story is of a young healer coming into her power and getting more than she bargained for when she saves the life of a young prince. It reminded me of a Mercedes Lackey novel, which to me is the greatest compliment you can pay an author. Jen Wylie might be a newer author, but her stories unfold like those of seasoned veterans. BUY IT, READ IT, YOU'LL LOVE IT. I did.

Title: Sweet Light
Author: Jen Wylie
Genre: Fantasy/Romance
Publisher: Echelon Press May 2011
Format: E-book
ISBN: 0012590045

Shara is a Healer. She is raised since childhood inside the walls of Healer Hall, a community of people who employ their own traditions and beliefs. When she earns the rank of Journeyman she moves to the barbaric kingdom of Glendor to be the court healer.

War befalls the kingdom and Shara is thrust into a world that she was not trained to handle. The battle lines of war are grim, bloody places and Shara is ill equipped for the job. When a surprise attack happens on her camp she is forced to flee on horseback alone. She stumbles upon a seriously injured solider and they begin a journey back to Glendor that takes longer than they expected.
During the long and difficult journey Shara falls in love with her charge. Little does she know that he is not just any solider, but someone who should be off limits to her heart. By the time she learns her love’s true identity she is already in love.

But falling in love with the solider is the least of her worries. As her healing powers grow so do the number of men in her life and Shara begins to discover that decisions of the heart are more difficult than she once thought.

I read this book in a day. It was so easy to slip into this world and the story just picks you up and sweeps you along until you look up and realize that you have read half the book. I became invested with these characters quickly and just couldn’t wait to see where the story was going.
Shara was innocent but not blind. She was able to access a situation quickly and make decisions based on what she thought was right. I liked her honesty and ability to win people over by just being herself. I found the place and customs in which she was raised to be a lot different from what I have learned/read about people in those ancient times. I enjoyed reading about her healing abilities and marveled at the way she was able to look within herself to gain knowledge about her own body. This book was a great look at a paranormal ability that one doesn’t get to read about often.

David was another character that I liked. I found myself feeling oddly protective of him at the beginning of the book. He was an endearing, innocent and sometimes child-like character that I was drawn to. I always wanted to know more about him. His cousin, Dric, was another character in the book that I took a great liking too. He was gruff on the exterior but inside he was a romantic, a quality in a large warrior that I happen to very much like.

I found myself reading and reading trying to get to the end to see where the story was going and what was going to happen to the characters. I was a little let down with the way the story progressed. Not really with the plot but perhaps the details. I wanted to know more. I wanted to know why. Why the things that happened did happen. Sure, there were reasons but I felt a little unsatisfied by them. At the end of the book David does things so out of character and while I understood the reason I still wanted to know more. What of these people with dark powers? Where did they come from, what was their motivation and what were they hoping to gain in having David complete the task they set out for him to do? And why was Shara so attracted to three men? I understood two of the attractions but there was never a definite answer to the third man, Dric. And really, did it matter who she was attracted to once she had made her choice? I don’t really want to get into specific examples because then I would be giving away the book and what fun would that be?

Clearly, Sweet Light is a good read. I read it so fast that my saying different would be loony. I am left to wonder if there will be a sequel and if there is what will be revealed. I sincerely hope there will be another one because I would love to spend more time with these engaging characters. In the name of summer I encourage to pick up this book and give it a shot. I bet that before you know it the characters will befriend you and the book will be read.

GENRE: YA Fantasy Romance
THEME: Magic

REVIEW:
And I thought being in a love triangle was tough… In Sweet Light debut author Jen Wylie gives her protagonist three very different men to choose from. It was a big change from the romances I’ve read before and very refreshing.

Shara is known as a healer, where she is trained from a young age to build her gift. Working for the king in another land, she is sent to help his army with any healing they need. After a horrible attack from the enemy she gets separated from her army and finds an injured solider. She soon learns that her heart cannot resist this solider, but her heart still yearns for her past love… As well as another man, a Captain, who protects her fiercely. But her duty and what she was trained for might keep her from choosing any of them.

This is defiantly a story of love, destiny and magic. Shara begins to learn more of herself by becoming a stronger person as well strengthening her gift. I really enjoyed her has a character, though I felt she was a little too innocent and sweet at times. I also was excited about Shara’s healing ability and that her power starts to grow, I like that its still a learning process for her.

David, the solider, my heart just went out to him all throughout the book. I really enjoyed the journey as a reader that Wylie took us with him. I really loved learning more about him and his family connections. Plus his love for Shara was so sweet that it made my heart melt. He had his rough sides, he has his ups and downs that give his personality a lot of kick

Shara’s three love interests are a main focus, you see how their all connected and its mentioned why, but not in the detail I would of hoped. I have a feeling Wylie is going to have this be the major plot for the next book. I also was curious on a dark power that showed up randomly in the story. There wasn’t really any detail in where it came from, so I’m hoping to get more about that in the second book.

Overall Sweet Light was a great debut novel for Wylie. Her characters were really what made this book so wonderful. I loved all three love interest in their own way, Dric a captain and protector, her past love knows her better than anyone, and David whose just so loving and innocent. I can’t wait to learn more about Shara’s gift and what happens with all the men who have stolen her heart in some way.

RECOMMENDATION:
This is a young adult book for all ages, minor violence with some fight scenes. Fans of Kristie Cook and Amanda Hocking will enjoy this series.

For a sheltered healer who had yet to tap into her gift, Shara found herself in the worse possible circumstances. She had not signed up for this. She was not a battle healer and she was sure that nightmares of these horrific scenes would haunt her for years to come. But what could she do? King Darren had ordered her to stay behind and help heal those who had been wounded. If only her gift had been activated! She was sure she could have done more. But it was too late. They had been forced to retreat back towards camp with the enemy right behind them. Shara barely escapes the battle and the horse takes off in the wrong direction! In her mad dash for safety she almost runs over a wounded solder. Frightened, but determined to help this solider, she jumps off the horse to check for the worst of his injuries. She binds what she can and is shocked when the solider regains consciousness. She explains to him who she is and that they need to get out of here and fast. They were still so close to the battle. The solider is completely covered in blood and gore and passes out not long after she gets him on the horse. She gets a safe distance away and finds a water source to help clean and care for most of his wounds. After bathing his face, she is shocked to feel a jolt pass through her. He was very handsome. She has been taught to be non responsive to her patients but she knows that this one is going to be different.
This story takes you through Sharas adventures and mishaps as she comes into her gift. She discovers she has other talents besides just healing and ends up teaching her masters a few things. But where there is light there is also dark. There must always be two sides to every coin. Shara’s light burns bright and as so she draws the darkness towards her. Will she prevail? Can she defeat the evil that has become a part of her and face her worst fear?
Shara is a delightfully innocent and lovable character. The men in her life are all complicated and are all very different, seemingly to form a triangle. My favorite character would have to be Dric. He is a loyal friend and fierce warrior. Not to mention exciting. The story itself is very surprising. Just when you feel like you know what’s going to happen, the story takes a surprising twist. I enjoy stories that aren’t predictable and this one leaves you guessing all the way to the very end! This is a delightful read!

Shara is a Healer. In her homeland, Healers are gifted with magic that they use to help others. It’s sacred, and she comes from a land that is far different from Glendor, where she’s been summoned to during a war. After their camp is attacked, she rides off on horseback and stumbles across an injured soldier. She nurses him back to health, and they set off on a journey back to their home. Even though the soldier can’t speak, Shara is falling in love with him more and more every day, until the moment his identity is revealed to her. She knows she’s not supposed to love him, but she can’t help it, and this sets in motion a chain of events and a downward spiral with love interests as her heart is provoked by not just one man, but by three.
Jen Wylie is one of my favorite authors. Not only can she tell amazing stories, she does so with passion and in a way that is completely unlike anything on the market. Sweet Light is original, and I was sucked into the world, feeling everything that Shara felt.
This story is filled with magic, fantasy, and romance. Although David was the first guy on the scene, I have to admit I’m kind of a Team Tirel girl myself. There’s just something about him that makes me go all weak in the knees. Sigh. But I think any reader will have a difficult time choosing any of the three. They each offer Shara something wonderful in their own way.
A little ways past the half of the book, things turn dark. I did NOT see it coming. I was completely blindsided. I always know which way a story is going to go, but I didn’t see this. It gripped my heart, and I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough. Shara is tested time and time again. She’s an amazingly strong character, and I don’t give spoilers, but I’m satisfied with the ending—how everything turned out for her. Any other ending and I would have been climbing the walls. This is definitely an emotional read. Beautiful prose and beautiful story. I recommend it to any and everyone who love Fantasy and Romance!

Shara is a trainee healer, sent to work at the battle-front in Jen Wylie’s intriguing fantasy novel, Sweet Light. The fantasy world is nicely drawn, with details revealing themselves convincingly through circumstance and dialog. There’s plenty of depth and scope—a world of healers, its political interactions with other peoples around it, kings and politicians, soldiers and spies, plus a touch of magic. Shara’s battle’s not going the way her leaders hoped, and soon she’s running away through the forest, where she comes upon a wounded, and oddly silent soldier. With nothing but the medicines in her pouch and the herbs of the forest to help her, she determines to help, and so begins a beautiful relationship that carries through the book.

The concept of soul-ties is nicely developed as Shara falls in love. The absence of her previous lover leaves her angry, but what might his return bring to her? The impossibility of her present relationship brings pain, but what are the alternatives? Pulled three ways, aided and abetted by the friend who pleads her cause, she seems to find resolution only to have it quickly snatched away.

The novel reads like two parts in a longer series and I found myself wishing by the end that there was more. So many unanswered questions remain, and the world is too big to be left without exploring them. There’s a feeling of incompleteness, even though the story’s told. Perhaps that’s a compliment to the author’s imagination, that her characters remain with the reader. An enjoyable romantic fantasy crying out for a sequel, Sweet Light is a complex look at the human heart, prejudice, loyalty and love.

I absolutely LOVED this book!!! Everything about it made me want to read more and more and more! I stayed up all night reading this book and when my mom interrupted me when I was at a really good part, I actually got mad and was just itching to get back to reading the entire time I had to talk to her. Yeah, it's one of those books :) Shara was such a good main character for this book, with her subtle beauty and growth in confidence and power. I loved following her story and feeling everything she felt as not one, not two, but THREE men fell in love with her. When I thought about the three different guys that liked one girl, I was like there is NO way I am going to like a book like this, but I loved it! I must say my favorite of the three guys was Dric, with his protective ways overall strong, manly aura about him. I can't tell you who she actually end up with, but I really liked how it ended. Maybe there's room for another book about this world? I hope so since it's Jen Wylie's debut novel! I would love to see more of Anna, David's sister, because she worked so hard to make everybody around her happy that I don't even know if she was happy herself. But the only problem that I had with this book is I felt like some things moved too fast. I would have loved for things to develop more slowly so that I could have more time enjoying the emotions and moments with the characters. I don't know, maybe I just didn't want this book to end! It was such a good fantasy romance that had a hint of the historical genre (with kings, castles, and battles), which is exactly my cup of tea.

Well, I wont lie, this one took me a while to get into. The beginning started off a bit slow to me. Yes there was action and a lot going on, but I just wanted to know where it was going.

For a young adult novel, this definitely had some more adult subject matter. Is it safe for kids to read? Yes, but there is reference to her being in a sexual relationship from the age of 13. Their people have a different way of life. Its a whole other world. It definitely makes sense for the book and I loved how everything came together, but just a warning.

Shara has grown up in Healer Hall, learning to harness her gift and being around others like her. When she makes journeyman and is given the opportunity to get out of her bubble, she is definitely interested in it. What she doesnt expect is to be placed into the middle of a war. After finding a hurt soldier and nursing him back to life, she finds her self falling in love with him.

This story is JAM PACKED with Twists, Secrets, Revelations, and just so much that you would not expect. There are definite themes and occurrences that are very powerful. You never know what is going to happen next, you are definitely kept on your toes throughout the entire story!

You would think that the 3 love interests would be a bit much, but honestly I felt myself being drawn to each of them in their own ways. It's kinda frustrating that she can't have all three. lol. I'm honestly at a loss for where I hope her life will end up.

Following what is in one's heart and allowing love to prevail brings this story to an ultimate "Sweet Light."

This story begins with Shara, a gifted healer, fleeing a bloody battle and rescuing an injured soldier who has fallen beneath her horse's hooves in the midst. Caring for him and trying to find their way home, love begins to bloom between the couple in spite of the obstacles that lay between them. Follow their journey, as their relationship builds and sometimes wears very thin, with outside influences from mystical elements and their involvements with others from their past. Will their love for one another be strong enough to pull them through? Come read and see!

This is Jen Wylie's debut novel and I found it to be a very enjoyable book. She has blended a sweet romance with some fantasy elements and combined them into a very good storyline. Her characters are very real in their actions and dialogue and they all blend together very smoothly til the very end, which in itself, left me wondering if there is going to be more to this story to tell. I guess I will just have to wait and see.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a light romance with little fantasy additions.

This book was kindly provided to me by it's wonderful author for my honest review.

Shara is a healer in the midst of a war. She's been conscripted by King Darren to be a court healer, but then finds herself in the middle of battle. When she saves a young, mute soldier, she doesn't know that her bond with him will cause shock waves throughout not only the kingdom, but through the healer community as well.

The story started solid. The characters are rich, and there is much descriptive detail so that the reader is immersed in the world that Jen built. Shara is a strong character who sheds the obscurity of an over-shadowing lover by striking out on her own to become a master healer. There are hints that she is destined to be a strong, powerful healer.

The story itself is quite good, however, it's one of those stories that I'd call a 'slice of life'. I would call this character driven, and I do prefer plot driven books. She's just going on with her day-to-day life, and we the readers are watching. There's nothing wrong with that kind of story, but there's no sense of urgency or tension or suspense either. The story is mellow and smooth, and doesn't carry a dramatic climax.

Towards the end, the writing started to unravel a bit, with a number of grammatical errors.

This a good read if you like character driven fantasy stories that follow the life and times of your favorite character.

Sweet Light by Jennifer Wylie is a wonderful and interesting read. I enjoyed the story because it went past the superficial ideals of love, into a deeper level of love. In Sweet Light we see different levels of love played through out the story. We meet Tirel, Shara's past lover. It is obvious that the feelings between the two have not yet died. Shara's relationship with David is pure and unblemished in the beginning and than we have her relationship with Dric. Although more like a friendship there's a lot of tension between the two, more than Shara likes to admit. I thought it was great that the relationships through out the book were deep and complex and I think Wylie did an excellent job playing with them. Overall, I found it refreshing that David's character is not your average knight in shining armor. Although a skilled swordsman, his battle wounds run deep. I loved that David's character was realistic. Wylie did a wonderful job displaying David's vulnerabilities. When we first meet David, he is wounded and mute. There is nothing strong about him but rather Shara is the strong one. I found this an extremely interesting set up. My only complaint is that the end seems unfinished or unresolved, but maybe we'll see a second book. I highly recommend this novel if you're a lover of romance/fantasy.

This book is terrific. At first, the reader may think that this novel is the stereotypical love drama that so many YA reads are turning to...however, the main character is a true heroine who is strong and selfless at times. She has a good head on her shoulders and quickly makes friends with the reader. The book starts out fast-paced, a quality the reader will appreciate and that will continue throughout the novel. The only slightly silly parts of the novel are the aforementioned "decisions of the heart", but these are not extreme or "twilighty" in any way. The secondary characters will become close to the reader as well, the reader him/herself will have a hard time picking "the one" for Shara. The events of the novel consist of intricate descriptions and intriguing dialogue. The reader will not be bored while perusing this novel. This novel is terrific for young adults/adults who enjoy a little fantasy with their fiction.

Sweet light was an enchanting read that pulled you in with its remarkable imagery and host of memorable characters. Though this book was set in a medieval time and the characters had to deal with very different circumstances, they were definitely relatable. The emotions and internal battles they faced were similar to many that we face in the course of our lives.

The characters themselves were highly entertaining. Shara was a heartwarming heroine who really grows a lot through the course of the book. My favorite character was Princess Anna she was a charming girl and had spunk. She was not the type of person to be pushed around. Anna was also the person who helped Shara and David both when times got rough. For a fantastic read look no further than "Sweet light".

I really love how she is able to create an entire world and make it very believable. All of her characters really come to life and they are all very likeable and feel like real people. She has created such a large world with so many characters she couldn't finish the story in just one book. She is currently working on the sequel and I am early looking forward to this. I was so caught up in the story, the characters and the world I read this in one day! I love Jen's books and I highly recommend them to anyone!

Shara is a Journeyman Healer, who is sent to the frontlines to heal the king’s army from an enemy army at their border. When the camp is attacked and Shara separated from the rest of the army, she finds a dying soldier called David, and manages to heal him. Whilst on their journey to the capital, Shara falls in love with him, but she finds out he is not who he seems to be. In the capital, Shana and David run into problems, David’s father doesn’t approve of Shana, Shana’s former lover, Tirel, arrives and she is involved in a love tangle, and a plot is afoot which could ruin Shara, and everything she loves.

Sweet Light is a nice romantic fantasy book which was interesting as the ending was not was not what I thought it would be. However, I did not find it as enjoyable as Wylie’s other books, the Broken Aro series, as it felt like the story was not as engaging.

I liked Shara as she was compassionate and a strong character, but there are two things I did not like about her, firstly, I have no idea why 3 men fall head over heels for her, she is not that remarkable, and secondly, she comes across much older than a teenager. David is wounded, vulnerable and his wounds run deep but he is strong and endearing. I did not like Tirel, partially because of his personality, but mostly because he slept with a 13 year old and he was in his late 20’s.

It seems like there should be more books in this series and I would be happy to read more of Shara. I would recommend Sweet Light to people who enjoyed Broken Aro.

I stopped reading when I got to the first romantic scene. I'm just not into "I don't know anything about this person but OH HOW I FEEL THE LOVE" kind of romantic scenes. I guess romance love stories just aren't my cup of tea; they happen too fast and are too naïve, and I don't like the generic "what is this I am not a foolish person who falls in love what is happening to me" kind of ~*inner struggles*~.

I know I haven't given the book a proper chance because I only read the beginning, but ugh. It just felt so generic and like I've read it a thousand times, I was basically yawning and struggling with reading more.

The language was pretty except for some editorial mistakes, but that's all.

Don't read this book unless you like generic romance, or if you're ready to ignore for the sake of the rest of the plot (which might be good, I don't know; I couldn't ignore).

While I enjoyed the story, I was often caught off guard by the numerous typos. I blame the editor. While I understand that dessert was brought after dinner and not desert, and that the characters thought instead of though, these errors really threw off my reading. I could have overlooked a couple of them but there were too many to overlook. My personal favorite was when the character Dric offered to "with walk" the character Shara.

Other than these grammatical problems, the story was interesting. I do feel like I stepped into the middle of the story and would be interested in knowing more about the characters. I would have liked more development of the world and I felt the book started in the middle of the description on the cover.

I purchased this book at the Chicago Lit Fest on Sunday and finished the book a couple of days after so I definately found it enjoyable.

I thought Broken Aro was good and Broken Prince was very good. I liked the synopsis of this one, so thought I'd give it a try.

It just didn't work for me at all. I never felt like I understood any of the characters, and most of them, including Shara, didn't feel real. I didn't believe in the romance. If you take the mystical elements away, the main characters didn't seem to have anything drawing them together. The love triangle part worked better for me, although even that seemed like an awfully weak connection.

Towards the end, the plot takes a sharp turn. On the one hand, it got a bit more interesting. But I also didn't find that plot turn believable, or at least I didn't believe Shara's reaction to it.
