A very thorough and interesting dive through an overlooked side of history. Extremely engaging, especially for a textbook, despite all of the information I never felt overwhelmed. Maybe not a book for everyone but I enjoyed it and think it's worth checking out if you enjoy history.

As a society we tend to view gender roles prior to the 1960's as this static force that dates back to time immemorial. This book does a job of dispelling that notion by showing how the lives of women in just one geographic region changed dramatically over a mere three-hundred years. Smith does an amazing job of avoiding what most women's studies books do, and never degrades into some trope filled feminist rant. She doles out clean cut and illuminating history for the duration of the book.

For a textbook, it was actually engaging and interesting. Not bad overall, and a very interesting subject matter.
