A useful book for anyone looking for new 19th Century authors to try. He is sound on Dickens, Eliot, Hardy,Trollope, less so on Meredith, hopelessly fooled by most poets, but as well as bringing obscure authors to notice (thank heaven for Gutenberg) the book provides an interesting insight into how literary tastes have changed.
