#1 Essence bestselling author Patricia Haley takes sibling rivalry to a shocking new level as one man tries to heal his broken family in this compelling series based on popular biblical stories. Don Mitchell is certain the Lord has a plan for him to reconcile his family, when his younger half brother, Joel, suddenly resigns as CEO of their father’s company. The gesture comes after Joel has nearly sent the enterprise into bankruptcy. Don’s first order of business as newly appointed head of DMI is to bring his estranged older sister home. It isn’t easy. Tamara has been running from the past for years. But once she is home, she plans to claim her rightful place in the multimillion-dollar family ministry—no matter what it takes or who gets hurt. Joel, meanwhile, is regretting his decision to step down and is doing everything in his power to resume his path to greatness. As Don finds himself waist-deep in the corporate mess Joel left behind, his love life is also in flux. He must balance a complicated friendship with Abigail, his right-hand woman at DMI, with a budding romance involving his beautiful business partner in South Africa. Just as Don begins to realize that forgiving and forgetting may be his greatest weapon, a terrifying ordeal rocks the family to its core, and they must turn to God and to one another for the answers.
Patricia Haley, an award winning national bestselling author, earned the title of ‘trailblazer’ after achieving remarkable success with her first faith-based novel. She self-published her debut novel, Nobody's Perfect, in 1998 and immediately sold nearly 20,000 copies in an industry where selling 5,000 copies at the time was highly regarded. The novel was the first of its kind to repeatedly make numerous national best sellers list, including #1 on the Essence (national African-American) list. Her next book, No Regrets, was popular among readers and followed Nobody’s Perfect onto the best seller’s list.
Originally from Rockford, IL, Patricia now lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, Jeffrey and their daughter. With an engineering degree from Stanford Univ. and an M.B.A. in marketing and finance from the Univ. of Chicago, readers are often surprised to hear that Patricia is writing novels, given her technical and business background.
When asked what led her to writing, her response is, "I was always good at creative writing in high school, but my interest was in math and science. I wasn't big on writing classes in college either. Engineering and graduating in four years was my primary focus. In the 90s, I went through a time of personal challenge. Writing became an unexpected tool of therapy. My first attempt at writing was a non-fiction (self-help) book. I got about halfway through it in 1994 and stopped. I set the book aside because a relationship storyline kept playing in my head. So I just sat down one day and wrote the first page. A few weeks later, another page and so on until nine months later I had completed my first novel, Nobody's Perfect. I questioned whether it could be any good, because the writing came very easily. Everything flowed so well. Without consciously trying, I was basically writing what I wanted to read and wasn't able to find in the stores -- clean fiction (without the sex and profanity), set in modern day, addressing real issues, and filled with a spiritual twist that honors God and gives people hope that they can get through their tough times. Everybody is bound to have at least one challenge in their life. "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." - John 16:33 (NIV Holy Bible). My writing is intended to remind people of the hope and peace that come from personally knowing Christ Jesus. I knew God had called and equipped me to write from the beginning. However, I realized in 2007 that God called me to write not for the sake of becoming a career author, but for the explicit purpose of encouraging others through motivational speaking, one-on-one mentoring, writing workshops, and of course the messages in my books. So writing is my gift and encouraging others is my purpose. In case you're wondering what is the difference between the two, gifts, talents, and strengths are the tools you're given to help fulfill your purpose."
Her published titles are Chosen (2009), Destined (2010), Let Sleeping Dogs Lie (nominated Best Inspirational Fiction of 2006), Still Waters, No Regrets, Blind Faith, short stories in Blessed Assurance and the Midnight Clear anthologies, and her trailblazing bestselling first novel, Nobody's Perfect (1998), which is currently out of print. Her future plans include releasing a revised as well as a sequel. Beyond her literary endeavors, she is a born-again believer in Christ Jesus and has a great love for the Lord, her beloved husband, daughter, family, and membership in Delta Sigma Theta Public Service Sorority, Inc., where she previously served as Chaplain in the Valley Forge Alumnae Chapter as well as a past committee chairperson. She is honored to be a charter member of both the Omicron Chi Collegiate chapter at Stanford University and the Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates (IL) Alumnae Chapter. Patricia spends part of her time working in Corporate America as a project manager. Formerly a member of the gospel choir, building committ
I am enjoying this series. Tamara, Joel and Don have a long ride to travel to really truly heal but at least Do. Is willing to extend the olive branch. Mama Madeline will not play about the safety of her children. Zarah does not realize the power she has but I think with some help she will become a force to reckon with. Overall a great series. Looking forward to seeing what the end holds.
Joel Mitchell has effectively run DMI into the ground. His father appointed him CEO of a thriving multi-million dollar ministry and after leading them to unprecedented profits in his first few years, he turned away from God and his resulting bad decisions nearly brought the company to ruin. Under the strain of impending failure, Joel resigned as CEO in favor of his older brother Don, who many felt should have been named CEO in the first place. Now Don is tasked with bringing the company back into the black without the financial strength of two of their four divisions (Joel sold one and forfeited the other when he defaulted on a business loan).
Don now has what he felt was his birthright, but it's not easy. He now has two companies to run- DMI and the company he created in South Africa, LTI (Leadership Training International). His goal is to bring DMI back to financial health and then merge the two companies. And on top of the business pressure, he now has two women interested in him: his longtime friend Abigail and Naledi, his right hand in South Africa.
Joel now feels he has nothing; he left the company that consumed his days and nights, and he lost Abigail's love and friendship in the process when he entered an arranged marriage as part of a business deal. Now all he has is a lonely wife who craves the love and affection he can't bring himself to give her and a desire to get back on top in the business world again. Despite his lack of love for Zarah, she holds the key to his revival as a businessman. She owns her deceased father's company, worth 1.5 billion dollars. Love her or not, he can't leave her or else his dreams of restored business glory are gone. Or are they?
Tamara Mitchell has wanted nothing to do with her family since a traumatic incident in her teen years, but now she's ready to come home. Can she carve out a place for herself in DMI or will she have to try something different in order to make her mark on the world?
Fast paced, emotionally charged and full of surprises- the next installment can't come soon enough.
Madeline has been trying to get DMI from Joel since her late ex-husband Dave passed away. She wants her son Don and her daughter Tamara to be at the helm of the company. Things have never been right since right before Dave Mitchell died, he put his outside son Joel, in charge of the company. Joel has veered off the course his father wanted him to stay on regarding DMI, Don felt slighted and went off to start his own company in South Africa, and Tamara has been globe trotting g across the world trying to run away from her problems. When Joel damn near runs DMI into the ground, he has to step down as CEO and gives the company to Don. Can this mess between the siblings and Madeline and Sherry (Dave's wives) ever be straightened out? Can this family put the past behind them and move forward?
In the series, I was blessed to read "Destined" and had the author on my Dream4More Radio through a virtual tour efforts. Now reading book three and will have to pick up "chosen" today at the library.
One of my favorite lines or passages in the book is "deposited the seeds of fear, doubt, and isolation long before..." How can one show love, closeness, or even bond if we are attached to these negative elements and not willing to let go!
I cannot believe that Patricia Haley would end this story like that...I knew that there had to be a fourth part. I loved this book as much as I loved the first one. I was shocked with some of the events that took place throughout the book. I was very surprised about the cliff-hanger ending. I guess I'll have to wait until she writes the next installment to find out how things are going to turn out. I would read it again, and I would recommend it.
