Felidae #3

Cave Canem

Rate this book
--Ulrich Deurer

Akif Pirinçci (pronunciation: [piːʁɪntʃi]) is a German writer of Turkish origin who is best known internationally for his novel Felidae.

Pirinçci was born on the 20th October 1959 in Istanbul, Turkey, but emigrated to Germany together with his parents in 1969. He began to write fiction at a young age, and published his first novel Tränen sind immer das Ende (literally, "tears always are the end") in 1980, at the age of 21. His next literary work, published in 1989, was the novel Felidae, a work of crime fiction with cats as the main protagonists. The novel has been translated into 17 languages and became an international bestseller. Due to the enormous success of the novel, Pirinçci expanded his concept of "cat crime fiction" and published several sequels to Felidae, out of which two, namely Francis (Felidae II) and Salve Roma, have been translated into English. An animated movie based on Felidae, the script of which had been co-written by Pirinçci, was produced in Germany in 1994, and was also dubbed in English. Pirinçci has published several other novels which were not set in the fictional reality of the Felidae series. Of these, his novel Die Damalstür -- based on which a movie was produced in Germany as well, and which is currently also under consideration for screen adaptation in Hollywood -- was recently translated and published in English under the title The Back Door.

Pirinçci currently lives in Bonn, the former capital of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Entertaining, even though other readers I know thought some of the darker themes are out of place, even tasteless, in this kind of cat-goes-Philip-Marlowe-type-detective kind of literature. I disagree. I like fables, and I also like authors who dare to include serious issue in comedy, dark pictures in actually light literature etc. The usual separation of light and serious literature that still is practiced in large parts of Germany's entertainment industry, tends to produce shallowness and boredom on both sides of this artificial border, and so I am always happy to find authors or filmmakers who cross that line in both directions.
Of course Pirinçci goes more than just a bit overboard with flowery language and metaphors, as he actually always did - there's one slightly convoluted image in about every second sentence, or so it feels. We got it, really, you're creative! Seriously - can't he just straightforwardly say what's happening for once? But on the other hand, even though the whodunnit was no surprise, and the inner logic was a bit strained at times (the species were always cleanly separated, now suddenly a human and a cat are chatting.) ... the story got to me in the end. What more can I ask for from a holiday read?

The third book in the Felidea-series follows the same structure as the first two. Only this time it also concers dogs. Again there are mysterious murders in Francis' neighbourhood. Dogs and cats are being killed. Both parties suspect eachother and war is on hand. Together with an old German sheppard army dog Francis tries to find the killer and stop the war.

Another great book by Akif Pirinçci, altough it did'nt have such a big impact on my as the first two books.

In his third Felidae novel, the author explores the concept of war through the eyes of cat-detective Francis. Trouble is rising between the cats and dogs in the neighbourhood. Several cats and small dogs have been found dead with weird, very clinical and precise bite marks on their neck, and it's up to Francis to deliver the culprit. Actually, Francis is not allowed to work alone on the case, since he gets company by Hektor, an ex-police dog owned by a retired Marshall of the army. Francis really doesn't like it, but soon he realized that all the clues he collects are misleading and whoever is doing the killings is smarter than he thought... some start believing the spirit of war itself is the murderer, but Francis and Hektor refuse to believe.

A really interesting novel, quite different than the previous ones and yet on the same wavelength. I personally liked the interaction between Francis, Hektor and Francis' son Junior a lot, and greeted the returning cats Bluebeard and Moses very warmly. Still, not as good as Felidae. ;)
